Covering a useful wide-angle focal length range, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens distinguished by its constant f/4 maximum aperture, sophisticated optical design, and use of image stabilization to realize sharp imagery. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Three aspherical elements are also featured and help to control distortion and minimize spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this wide-angle zoom also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 25.6-56mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.

Two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I've just bought this lens. I can hear an electronic noise when the stabilizer is on and I press half way the camera shutter button.I don't hear this noise when the stabilizer is off. Is it normal? Does anyone hear that noise?Thank you for your answer

A: Yes, that noise is normal. It is the stabilization working , correcting for the movement as you hold the lens.Hope it helps, but its quite normal.-Jim

Q: 2. I've used this on a new Canon Rebel T6i and it's hard to see an improvement over the 18-55 kit lens that came with the Rebel. I realize the cropped sensor is limiting but it's still 24.2 mp. Is the Rebel not up to deriving a significant benefit from this lens or is it just me?

A: This lens is primarily intended to be used on a full frame camera like 5D Mark III/IV. I have a 70D (APS-C) and 5d Mark III and I have never used this lens on 70D, though it would work. On 70D, I usually use the 18-135mm general purpose lens. On Mark III, 16-35mm acts as a terrific wide angle lens. I have some great pictures with this lens, that I can't even think about with an APS-C + 18-55mm lens. 18-55mm is one of the cheapest Canon Lenses. 16-35mm f/4L is a higher build quality and constant aperture lens.

Q: 3. Will the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS lens fit the Canon 6D?

A: Yes, of course. I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the results as well. In my opinion, it's the finest wide angle lens out there.

Q: 4. Hi guys. I shoot moving subjects in AI Servo and am not sure what would be better the f/4 with IS or the 2.8 III with the extra stop of light. Any recommendations?

A: I dont have a direct answer to your question. The f/4 is outstanding.

Q: 5. can this be used in heavy rain or down pour?

A: It is weather-sealed as long as you have a filter on the lens. That being said, I certainly would not use this in heavy rain conditions without some kind of cover for additional protection.

Q: 6. Online reviews have stated that there is a humming noise when recording video, since the lens have been out for 3+ years now is that still the case or has Canon made improvements on the IS to the point that it is silent now?

A: Sorry, I Haven't used it for video yet, only still photography.

Q: 7. I am ready to buy Canon's 16-35 f4L. Can I use a normal UV filter or should I use a thin UV filter?

A: If you are using the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens on a full-frame camera, as it is wider than 24mm, yes, I would recommend using a thin filter on this lens. If you are using this lens on an APS-C sensor camera, then a standard filter may be used.

Q: 8. I have a Canon 70D, does this lens work with base?

A: Yes it will.

Q: 9. What kind of warranty is on the lens? Is this lens USA version or grey market one?

A: Limited 1-Year Canon USA Warranty.

Q: 10. Does anyone have experience with this lens versus the 2.8 version (which is much more $$$). I have heard that within the f-stop range f4.0 and up, this lens is actually better than the 2.8 version. Can anyone with direct experience with both lens comment on whether this lens is better IQ, contrast, etc. ?

A: I own both lenses. The f/4 lens is better in every way...except being a stop slower. The IS of the f/4 version is invaluable. The only advantage of the f/2.8 version is being able to use a 2x faster shutter to photograph moving subjects. I never use the f/2.8 version anymore.

I had the 16-35 2.8 and was very unhappy with the sharpness (especially around the edges). Although I lost 1 stop, I find the 16-35 F4 to be an exceptional lens with great clarity throughout the image...and at a reduced price. For the work I do, the loss of 1 stop is inconsequential but the gain in image sharpness is priceless.

Taken this lens out a few times to play around with some landscape shots. Great sharpness and color rendition. The one drawback as others have stated are the plastic threads in the front so putting a filter on requires a little extra attention.

I used this lens for all of my hand held shooting for an indie film hot on a Canon DSLR. If you're new at this, the IS refers to the Image Stabilizer which is absolutely necessary for most hand held filmmaking. You don't need an aperture lower than 4 for most handheld work either as it's really tough to focus on a moving subject below an f4. So if you're debating between this lens and the 2.8 with no IS, the difference for me was for it's purpose as a primary filmmaking lens. It also takes great stills for events or parties or even real estate with it's nice wide angle. If you're only going to take photos, then you may want the other model of this with no IS and f2.8. Great lens, lightweight, sharp image, very accurate.

I can now ditch the 17-40. This lens is sharp, and easier on the wallet. At f/4, bokeh is surprisingly nice.

I'm currently using the Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L II lens, (which is excellent), so when I started looking for an ultra-wideangle zoom, I was concerned about how it compared optically to the 24-70. Let me ally all of your concerns. This is a GREAT ultra-wideangle lens, especially for the money. It actually rates better than the 16-35 F/2.8, but it is pretty much the same size, just a tad lighter than the F/2.8 Highly recommended!

Hey All Always I used to go with my Great Combo 5dm3 with 70-200 ii which is always giving me the WOW pictures. But for long time I was not happy with wide angle focal length with 24-105/24-70 2.8 ii/16-35 2.8 Then later I bought this lens after seeing the paper configuration and it blows me away :). Yes its very sharp @ 24-35mm but 16-23 is acceptable and not bad. If you want to feel the meaning of Sharpness what I refer here, please see the image I have attached here. Just make sure to use proper filters to get professional grade shots. Now its time for Landscape Photography, Go with Confidence with this one.
