The Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 28mm T2 Lens from Venus Optics is a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 2x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35+ sensors such as the ALEXA 35 and RED V-RAPTOR. It features a focal length of 100mm, interchangeable PL and EF lens mounts, an aperture range of T2 to T22 for a deep depth of field, 10 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh, and a 2x anamorphic squeeze to capture a vintage, cinema-style anamorphic look. Using an optional 1.4x full-frame expander adapter, Proteus lenses can also cover a full-frame sensor.

The 28mm prime lens has a minimum focus distance of 18.9" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, blue lens flares, and a 85.6° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet, 0.8 MOD cine gears on the focus and aperture rings, a 114mm front diameter, and a 105mm filter thread. This lens includes PL and EF mounts, a hard case, a support foot, and a tool kit.

With a 2x squeeze ratio, this anamorphic lens produces a 2.66:1 on a 4:3 sensor and a 2.4:1 on a 6:5 sensor after de-squeezing. It provides room for cropping to a golden 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The 2x squeeze ratio yields an ultra-widescreen cinematic look desired by the film industry. The squeeze ratio remains constant at any focusing distance to avoid anamorphic mump effects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this include lens support? If not, is it fit screw size with ARRI LS-9?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens (PL Mount, Feet) has a thread to accept a 15mm rod lens support like the Axler 15mm Rod Bridge Adapter BH #AXRAB15LWS • MFR #RAB-15LWS

Q: 2. Will it work on an Amira? Are the ND's in the way?

A: the rear anamorphic adapter includes a measurement tool to determine compatibility, they do not provided a list of compatible cameras or lenses and state that compatibility is determined on a case by case measurement basis.

Q: 3. Does anyone know how many shims are required to get this to focus properly and stay parfocal on the EF mount? Tried it with 2 shims for the EF mount (on a komodo with the canon VND adapter) and the focus got thrown off when zooming out.

A: From what we understand, you're using the Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens Bundle (Feet) (B&H# VEO2510029BF) with the included EF mount, and also the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter (B&H# CAMAEFRFDIND). While the lens is intended to be adapted using the included adapters, connections between those adapters and even minute differences between adapters and especially their fit can result in the lens being significantly less than parfocal. That's also true of the distance of the sensor relative to that of the mount of a camera. We'd recommend using the lens with a strong lens support, and also making sure that the procedure you're using for shimming it is appropriate. In particular, since your question was how many shims to use, please note that not all shims used for adjusting the flange distance of a lens are necessarily of the same thickness. Here's a popular video on the topic of shimming a lens: https://bit.ly/3u0rnim

Q: 4. Does this product include lens support? If not, is it fit with ARRI LS-9?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens (PL Mount, Feet) (B&H# VE25100T29PL) comes with a Y-shaped holder which would typically be attached to a lens support. Depending on how you set it up, yes, it would be possible to use the ARRI LS-9 Lens Support for 19mm Studio Bridge Plate (B&H# ARK2.47227.0) as part of a means of support.

Q: 5. Does it work with Sony full frame such as A7iii under super 35mm mode? Thanks.

A: Yes, it will. :) Super35 mode on the A7-series cameras will set the sensor to an APS-C format.

Q: 6. This lens does not appear to work with the Canon M50, set to manual mode. The 7Artisans 60mm also does not work with M50. Is there a setting for M50 to make this lens work?

A: If you go to page 5 in the camera's settings menu, click on Custom Functions, then go the item called "Release shutter w/o lens", and select "Enable". Then, mount the lens to the camera.

Q: 7. Will the Laowa 65mm macro lens store its EXIF information in the Fujifilm camera?

A: There are no electronic contacts so there will not be any exif info.

Q: 8. Will this adapter clear the sensor on an Arri Alexa?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 1.33x Rear Anamorphic Adapter (PL-to-PL) suitability is determined on a case by case basis. A measurement chart is provided for you or your technician to check compatibility.

Q: 9. Is the Nikon Z7 compatible with this manual focus lens? Besides no image stabilization, are other capabilities lost?

A: As the Venus Optics Laowa Argus FF 28mm T1 Cine Lens (Nikon Z) is a fully manual lens, aperture and focus would need to be controlled manually as well. You may also lose any focus confirmation features built into the camera itself.

Q: 10. Does this lens have electrical contacts to communicate the settings to the camera?

A: Unfortunately, the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 28mm f/1.2 FF Lens (Nikon Z) does not have any electrical contacts.
