Designed to provide body-and-face-melting bass on a massive scale for festival systems, touring systems, high-intensity nightclubs, and art cars, the BASSBOSS Kraken-MK3 is a hybrid vented short-horn quad 21" bandpass subwoofer with an integrated 10,000W amplifier and advanced DSP. The Kraken-MK3 provides the same output as 4-5 double 18" subwoofers, but in a cabinet roughly the size of just two.

The Kraken's remarkable design provides an excellent transient response that's delivered by the efficient performance of short horns at the upper end of the subwoofer range, while the extended depth is delivered by the large, vented volume, long excursion drivers, and prodigious power.

MK3 Amp Update

  • There are all-new amplifiers in the MK3 series. Total power has increased, however power allocated to woofers increased substantially. The higher output voltages provide more impact. Universal input voltage compatibility of 90-250V provides more flexibility. Waterproof connections provide more peace of mind.

MK3 Enhanced DSP

  • The MK3 features an all-new 96 kHz DSP. The push-button presets have doubled from 4 to 8, and up to 100 presets can now be stored in the DSP and loaded via LAN. The comprehensive suite of processing includes meticulously tuned equalization, all necessary high-pass and low-pass filters, and multiple protection systems and limiters to prevent driver overload in as many ways as possible.

ControlBASS Software

  • ControlBASS software supports an essentially unlimited number of possible BASSBOSS-developed or customized user presets, which integrate seamlessly and coherently with all other BASSBOSS products for effortlessly perfect setups. The latest in DSP programming developments can be added via easy remote updating.

The Kraken is a vented, short-horn, quad 21" bandpass subwoofer. The four drivers are loaded into a large acoustical volume that is tuned to a low frequency, and the front of each driver is loaded into a short horn. The vented enclosure section provides extended deep bass performance and the foreshortened horn sections provide increased upper frequency sensitivity, which result in improved transient response, aka punch.

Each woofer is powered by a discrete 2500W amplifier, making the total power per cabinet an impressive 10,000 watts. This ensures that the amps aren't the limiting factor in the low-frequency output. Providing abundant power prevents overheating issues and virtually eliminates the damage that clipping an insuffiently small amp can cause.

The big beast is kept under your control by integrated and comprehensive DSP. The DSP provides high-pass filters, low-pass filters, equalization, alignment filters, and limiting. A variety of different filter settings are available in the presets. Eight presets are available at the touch of a button on the amplifier, and the DSP can store up to 100 presets onboard, all of which can be accessed via software and a LAN connection.

  • To take further advantage of the Krakens’ output density, aligned arrays are facilitated by interlocking sliders. Block arrays, side-by-side arrays, and front/back cardioid configurations can be deployed with the cabinets interlocked. The optional transport carts can support two cabinets, allowing unparalleled truck-pack density. The carts feature recesses into which the sliders fit.
  • There are two interesting advantages to the dual-opposed, force-canceling nature of the Kraken design. One is the absence of front-to-back rocking motion, which both reduces the amount of lateral energy transmitted into floors, and makes the cabinets less prone to walking. The other is relatively little secondary radiation from the rear of the cabinet. This, along with the directivity associated with its size, makes the area behind a Kraken fairly quiet compared to an array of conventional cabinets capable of similar output. Ultimately, cardioid configurations of Krakens tend to require fewer rearward-facing cabinets to achieve effective cancellation behind the array.
  • The cabinet itself is made from 18mm, 13-ply birch plywood and is extensively braced. It is coated in high-temperature bonded polyurea and features powder-coated, perforated steel grilles. The cabinets are axially symmetrical, featuring UHMW Polyethylene sliders and steel bar handles on 4 sides.

New to the MK3 are Neutrik powerCON True 1 TOP (Total Outdoor Protection) waterproof amp connectors. Waterproof mains connectors, and a totally isolated input connection section and cones that are waterproofed make the MK3 series the powered loudspeakersthat can be used outdoors without fear of what the weather will bring. (Or used indoorswithout fear of what the partiers bring.)

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would it be OK to just leave this sub on all the time to avoid the auto power-save clicking that many reviewers have complained about?

A: According to Sony; The SA-CS9 115W 10” Active Subwoofer features an auto power on/off function. If there is no signal input for a few minutes, the POWER indicator lights up in red and the subwoofer enters power-saving mode. And while in this mode a signal is input to the subwoofer, the subwoofer automatically turns on. This feature can also be turned off by sliding the POWER SAVE switch on the rear panel of the subwoofer to OFF.

Q: 2. Can this fit a built FX9 with handle and monitor or must I remove one of those elements to close the pack?

A: We have not tested this particular setup but based on standard measuring, it should fit.

Q: 3. can I use the 32 bit motu traveler with my 64 bit macOS?

A: Yes, the MOTU Traveler-mk3 FireWire Audio Interface can be used with a 64-bit macOS system. In this scenario, the 32-bit float point recording capabilities of the Traveler are a separate specification to the Mac's 64-bit application processes. The MOTU Traveler-mk3 has the following system requirements for macOS: -G4/500Mhz Power Mac or faster equipped with at least one FireWire port -At least 256 MB of RAM (512 MB or more is recommended) -Mac OS X (version 10.4.9 or later) -A large hard drive (preferably at least 100 GB)

Q: 4. Can the hip belt be removed?

A: Yes, this bag has a removable hip belt.

Q: 5. Can I just connect to my laptop using the phono to audio cable

A: Not at all. You would need to connect to your computer's dedicated subwoofer output if it has one.

Q: 6. Will this fit a canon c100 ii with the top handle and side grip attached? thanks!

A: The C100 Mark II with Top Hand and Side Grip attached has dimensions of 7.4 x 11 x 13.1". This case has interior dimensions of 11 x 18 x 8.75". Depending on the position you place the camera in the bag, it will be possible to handle the C100 Mark II with top handle and side grip still attached.

Q: 7. Can this bag fit a C300 MK II with lens and monitor?

A: The interior height of the bag is 8.75 inches. The camera will fit without any problems, but the handle and/or monitor will have to be removed from the top. The C300 is taller than virtually every other cinema camera on the market, so it requires a little adjustment in order to fit inside an airline carry-on compatible case.

Q: 8. I have a sony home theater system DAV-DZ290K. Can i connect this subwoofer to the system

A: Yes, it COULD be connected via the audio out connections, though not recommended, as these are full-frequency output . Recommend to instead use a PASSIVE sub-woofer. The Sony DAV-DZ290K has a subwoofer out to a PASSIVE (not ACTIVE) connection.

Q: 9. anyone use this as a battery bag?

A: This bag could be used as battery bag. Having more dividers would be optimal if looking to separate various batteries, but the spacious 11 x 18 x 8.75" interior could hold a good amount.

Q: 10. how do i connect this to a KRK Classic 7 studio monitor?

A: The Sony SA-CS9 10" 115W Subwoofer (B&H # SOSACS9) should ideally be connected to an A/V receiver with a subwoofer output, such as the Sony STR-DH590 5.2-Channel A/V Receiver (B&H # SOSTRDH590). The audio device that is sending sound to the KRK Classic 7 Studio Monitors may be able to be connected to one of the receiver's inputs.

It is definitely better than the original one, which got lost because it was too wobbly to stay on place. The new one as expected fits like a glove and it holds much batter than the original one!
