The Audio-Technica System 10 ATW-1701/L is a digital wireless microphone system specifically engineered to meet the audio needs of vloggers, mobile journalists, and videographers. It provides an easy-to-operate solution with sophisticated technology to ensure reliability and high-quality audio for projects ranging from YouTube and wedding videos to corporate spots and interviews.

The ATW-1701/L features an omnidirectional lavalier microphone and bodypack transmitter for hands-free speech and dialog, along with a camera-mount receiver that connects to your DSLR or mirrorless camera via the included 3.5mm output cable. It operates anywhere in the world, transmitting 24-bit/48 kHz audio in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, well away from potential TV and radio interference.

This peer-to-peer system delivers three levels of diversity assurance—frequency, time, and space—for optimal performance at a range up to 100'. Just power up the components, and the receiver automatically seeks out a clean frequency and pairs up with the transmitter, saving you the hassle of scanning and syncing before a shoot. Up to eight wireless mics may be used on set at once.

  • Space Diversity: The receiver compares the signal showing up at its two antennas and chooses the strongest one.
  • Time Diversity: The transmitter sends the digital signal in two imperceptibly different time slots and compares the two.
  • Frequency Diversity: The digital audio is sent over two different frequencies at the same time and the system chooses the cleaner one.
  • For optimal performance, users are encouraged to maintain as direct a line of sight as possible between the transmitter and receiver.

  • The MT830cW lavalier microphone features an Audio-Technica cW-style 4-pin locking connector and delivers a natural, broadcast-quality sound optimized for speech intelligibility. Its omnidirectional polar pattern ensures that the sound remains consistent, even when the speaker's head moves away from the mic.
  • The level control on the transmitter can be set to match the sensitivity of your microphone or audio source for distortion-free input.
  • The output level on the receiver can be reduced by 10 or 20 dB if you find you're overloading the input to your camera or recording device. The 3.5mm output can be switched to deliver either a balanced or unbalanced signal.
  • Both the transmitter and receiver are housed in lightweight, plastic chassis and equipped with belt clips. The included shoemount allows you to easily mount the receiver to your camera.
  • With just a quick press, the power switch on the transmitter doubles as a mute function. This function can be locked out to prevent an accident.
  • Conveniently, the receiver's LCD display shows critical information for the receiver as well as the transmitter—including battery status, signal level, mute status, and channel selection for both units.
  • An additional 3.5mm output on the receiver allows you to monitor your signal while recording—helpful if your camera doesn't offer a headphone jack.
  • The receiver features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 12 hours of operation. Using the included power adapter, the battery can be recharged via USB in about 4.5 hours, while in operation.
  • On the transmitter's end, power is supplied by two AA batteries, giving you up to 7 hours of shooting time depending on battery type and usage.
  • With this peer-to-peer system, you can only use one transmitter and one receiver at once. However, up to 8 transmitters can be paired with the receiver ahead of time. This is useful in situations when you have multiple speakers, one after another, and you need to have them miked up and ready to go. All you'll have to do is turn one transmitter off and the next one on.
  • For man-on-the-street interviews or if you need to pass the mic between several people, you can add the ATW-T1002 handheld transmitter/microphone to your system.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I already have a Rode PinMic that I use with a Zoom H1 for maximum discreetness when shooting weddings. Will the PinMic work with this system, or should I make sure to get the audio-technica lavalier?

A: the mic attaches by a unique to AT .. to my frustration my sony mics and sure mics will not work. Also odd with this system is the the the receiver uses 2 aa batteries (normal) the tranmitter pack must be recharged. (weird to me) I bought it for the neat antenna but I'd stick with Sony or Sure in the future. hope that helps. Pete

Q: 2. Can I use it while it is charging?

A: Yes

Q: 3. I use a Canon XA10 video camera and will be doing video shots in crowded cocktail bars. I need to find a good lavalier microphone system. I hear that the 2.4GHz is better that the UHF. Yeah? Also, I will usually be needing mics on 2 people as they'll be in the shots at the same time. (Maybe sometimes 3 people!) It seems this system is made for only 1 mic per camera?... I'm a bit new to all this, as you might be able to tell! I'd appreciate any advice or guidance. Thanks!

A: Of my 4 wireless mics the AT System 10 is the best. My other 3 mics (Sony) are analog and use the same freq band as some family radios in the US and of some world phones in Europe and Middle East. I got a lot of interference there. I only use 1 mic but I think that the same receiver can pick up several. I would wholeheartedly recommend The System 10.

Q: 4. Would I be able to use a different mic than the included Lav? What kind of adapter would be required for a mic with XLR output? It would be used with a fixed mic on a stand about 90 feet line of sight from the receiver. Sound would only be for camera sync.

A: You are NOT limited to just the included lav. There are several other mic options available including a cardioid lav AT898CW which I use, and a hand held cardioid with built-in transmitter designed for the System 10 reciever. You can also get (or make) adapters to connect XLR to the AT 4-pin with the right wiring. note that the impedence of some mics will match better than others.

Q: 5. I have AT 3000 series wireless microphones, are the connectors on my bodypacks compatible with the System 10 connectors?

A: I wish I could answer this. Right after I acquired the equipment some events happened that have prevented me from even trying it out. Sorry - I don't know.

Q: 6. Could you tell me which lav mic cpmes with it? Thanks in advance.

A: This system ships with the MT830cW lavalier. See the following link for more information: a href= http://bhpho.to/1BdG8NF target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1BdG8NF/a

Q: 7. Is the receiver unit dual band meaning can I use transmitters sending signal to one receiver unit?

A: The System 10 receiver is only capable of receiving a single transmitters signal simultaneously.

Q: 8. Is there a way to replace the receiver battery? I own this nice wireless system for about two years now and it started to drain fast...

A: Please contact Audio-Technica at 330-686-2600 to see about changing the rechargeable batteries in your wireless system.

Q: 9. Can you use more then one of these systems at the same time?

A: Users may use between 4 and 8 Audio-Technica System 10 Camera-Mount Digital Wireless Microphone Systems in tandem.

Q: 10. Can this be used without a camera? Can I record direct to my Mac using an Adobe Audition or Garage Band type application?

A: Yes if you have the adapter or interface for the Apple plug. I use the Tascam iXZ for Apple. You will also need an adapter to make it a 1/4 plug.

This mic system has greatly improved the quality of sound in my movies and video production for a medium size church. The system was purchased to replace a decent on-board Rhode mic but it more than exceeded expectations with full bodied and robust sound before sound editing. I would definitely recommend this mic for anyone who wants to improve on an on-board mic system. This system was also very simple to setup and use. I haven't found anything yet that I didn't like about this system.

This is the third System 10 ENG-style wireless system I've purchased -- this one replaced a Sure non-ENG system that is going to be illegal in the next couple of years. I've LOVED the System 10 ENG systems -- I've found the range to be excellent, the clarity to be excellent, and the battery life to be excellent. No problems whatsoever in using these, and they are a superb value.

Having used until now UHF remote microphones in the $500+ price bracket, this solution is both more cost-effective and has some benefits. We cover events on many continents and authorized UHF frequencies are not the same across borders. There is also talk of the FCC selling some of the frequencies for other uses. The AT solution of using the Wi-Fi 2.4 band cuts though all that, and works well. The receiver is also intelligently equipped with both an audio-out connector to feed the sound into your DLSR, and a headphone socket to monitor the recording. If you have a Canon 70D or 6D, neither of which has a headphone output during recording, this is a real plus.

I recently attended a trade show where I had to film multiple interviews for my client. I stuck the Audio Technica System 10 on my camera and took off. After using it for a couple of days in indoor and outdoor settings, I can say that I am a big fan - with one complaint (more on that in a second). NO INTERFERENCE: The System 10 was very easy to set up and use. It's basically plug it in and go. I used it on my dslr and the sound was great. In the past, I have rented the sennheiser microphones and while the sound quality was good, every show I worked had interference. Not one time did that become an issue with this system. It worked well in a windy situation. While there was some noise, it was no more than I would have anticipated. I didn't use it at long range, so I can't speak to that. BUILD QUALITY: The build quality is good, but not great. It is a lot of plastic and it is a little bulkier than other systems, but I can handle that at the price point. ONE NEGATIVE: My one big complaint is that the receiver has a rechargeable battery system. That sounds good at first, but the draw back is that if you are doing a long day of filming and it dies, you have to plug it in and wait for it before you can continue. I would have much preferred to have batters in it that I could replace when they die. Overall, it was a good system. For someone starting out and with limited audio knowledge, it does the hard work for you and just works!

The system works pretty much as advertised. It worked through several walls at a distance of around 50 feet with no problem. I did notice a high pitch noise at first, probably interference since I was standing next to a Wi-Fi router, but cleared up within a minute once the system found a clean signal to use. The mic it comes with has a crisp sound to it, without much bass. Overall, this is a great wireless system for anyone looking for a balance between price and value.

We got two sets of rack mount receivers, plus a on camera receiver, so 5 receivers in total. We got two handheld and two lavalier mics with transmitters, plus a headset mic for one of the transmitters. The two rack mount unit connects together to a perfect 1U unit. The user-friendlyness of this system is fantastic. No channel choice, just plug and play. You pair each transmitter and receiver like it was a wireless keyboard. If you only buy on system, they are paired out of the box. The power button doubles as mute button and keeps the RF alive, but mutes the sound, giving the user the ability to control the sound, without worrying the sound guy if the unit is on and working. The on-camera receiver, both outputs balanced and un-balanced signal, allowing us to use it both on our Sony A7s and on our Sony PXW-Z100, without conversion cables. The on-camera receiver is also rechargeable via standard USB cable. Remember to get the CP8306 Adapter Cable if you need XLR output or Rode SC7 if you need to use it with iPhone/FilmIC Best of all, and most importantly: Sound is spot on!

Like most of you who may be looking for a wireless solution I stumbled upon the System 10. I have tried both the Sennheiser G3 and Sony UWP and they lack the features the system 10 has. G3 doesn't have a way for you to monitor the audio going into the camera unless you are feeding your audio to a recorder but that would defeat the purpose of going away from double system recording. The Sony didn't impress me too much and I had trouble with the gain. Those two units are also several hundred dollars more. When I received the system 10 it took less that 3 minutes to hook everything up and the audio is crystal clear and professional quality. For those of you using Canon, go into your audio settings and choose Manual. Once in manual mode lower the volume all the way down and then bump it up one click. Exit the menu and your audio levels will be distortion and hiss free.

The System 10 is very easy to pair and ready to use right away. I can easily switch transmitters from the wireless lav to the handheld mic.
