The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. Due to its low impedance and closed-ear design, these headphones do an outstanding job of cutting down background noise while providing plenty of volume in the studio or in the field. Additionally, the closed design helps eliminate headphone bleed when overdubbing in the studio.

The MDR-7506 is an over-ear design and is ideal for use with MIDI workstations, camcorders, or other equipment with less than powerful headphone amplification. The headphone has a foldable design, making it convenient to store or transport, and its coiled cable allows it to stretch and spring back into place whenever you need a bit more reach.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. sound suddenly completely stopped coming through from the rh ear pad. left still works. about a year old. is it serviceable and where? i'm in new york city

A: It may be fixable depending on where the issue is on the headphone. For a repair option, you could reach out to Pro Sound Services at 212.586.1033. However, the cost of the repair be close to the cost of a new pair anyway, in which case we recommend purchasing a new pair.

Q: 2. the right hand pad of my mar-7506 stopped working. is it repairable? where? i'm in new york city.

A: This could indicate a short or issue with the cabling. This is not easily fixable on these headphones. To save time and money on possible repairs, we would recommend purchasing a new pair.

Q: 3. I saw some Sony headphones advertised as Hi-Res audio capable. Are these headphones capable of that?

A: In a word, no. They are not rated to exceed 20kHz in their upper frequency response. That doesn't mean they can't reproduce these frequencies in some capacity, it means they are not flat (however that is being measured) past 20kHz. In fact, these headphones have a significant drop off past 15Khz, but that does not equate to a more muffled or low-fi type of sound. You'd have to hear the difference between these and something like a Beyerdynamic DT880 to know what I mean. There is no loss of fidelity, but they are not rated up to 25 or 30kHz, which I would consider the minimum to be Hi-Res capable.I'm answering this in case it helps someone else out.

Q: 4. Do the earpieces rotate 90 degrees so they can be stored flat?

A: No, unfortunately they do not rotate for flat storage.

Q: 5. Relative to comparables, do these warm up your ears at room temperature or do they breathe?

A: The Sony MDR-7506 Headphones are closed-back headphones, so they will retain some heat naturally. However, with the default earcups they are not as large or tight of a fit as some other popular closed-back models.

Q: 6. My MDR-7506 stopped sending sound to the right ear, the left ear also started showing copper(?) in the wire. Where can I have my headphones serviced? I live in the Philippines but, bought my MDR-7506 here at B&H.

A: Hi Hans, we are only able to provide assistance for customers in North America. If you are outside of North America, we highly recommend visiting our Sony Global Web site for information on contacting the Sony Support Center in your region at a href= http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/. target= _blank http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/./a -Anthony

Q: 7. Anyone have L x W x H measurements when folded up to store?

A: 5" x 5.5" x 3.5"

Q: 8. Is there a MDR-7506 model that comes with an uncoiled cable? I hate all that extra weight on my head.

A: The Sony MDR-7506 Headphones are only available with the attached coiled cable. As an alternative, the Senal SMH-1000-MK2 Professional Field and Studio Monitor Headphones (B&H # SESMH1000MKT) are close in design and have a removeable cable. The SMH-1000-MK2 include both straight and coiled cables, so you have the option of using either style. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Monitor Headphones (B&H # AUATHM40X) and Audio-Technica ATH-M30x Closed-Back Monitor Headphones (B&H # AUATHM30X) also have a removeable cable and are both packaged with straight and coiled cables as well.

Q: 9. Where are these headphones made. China or Taiwan?

A: The pair I bought were made in Thailand. They are very good headphones, though. I use them for monitoring in my small studio when doing vocals. I have done rough mixdown late at night as well, and find the results pretty good the next morning.

Q: 10. I'm told that since these are 63 Ohm impedance, they require a fair amount of power to work properly. In other words, I was told to expect poor results from an iPad or iPhone. Is that correct?

A: These reference headphone are considered high impedance but will work with a mobile device, such as an iPhone or iPad. A portable headphone amplifier, such as the FiiO A1 Portable Headphone Amp (Black), BH #FIA1BK can be used to boost the signal.

If you work in any sort of audio or video production, you've seen these headphones. For good reason, great quality and rather well balanced and flat.

I am an audiophile who enjoys spending evenings immersed in jazz, classical, big band, classic rock ... a wide range and wide variety from my recorded collection and subscriptions.

I could not justify professional headphones, but these are PERFECT for those occasions when the rest of the household does not want to hear my music.

Great for watching the Criterion Channel late at night when your wife is asleep in the next room and get's woken by the sound effects from the excellent 'Afro Futurism' series. These headphones changed both our lives.

I've always loved music, but never spent a lot of money on headphones. I recently decided to dive in to music production, and needed a quality set of headphones. I'm glad I listened to the many reviews and went with these. They separate the highs mids and lows better than any other headphone I've listened through. The bass isn't overwhelming, but it is clearly there making it easy to balance the mix. Many of my favorite songs have elements that I'd never heard before listening through these. If you're new to high quality headphones like me, for the price, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this headset.
