Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this flash work with a 105mm macro lens?

A: Yes indeed. I have the R1 Wireless flash and use with the Nikon 105mm macro lens. It pairs nicely with good results.

Q: 2. Nikon macro for d850

A: Yes this will function with the D850.

Q: 3. Is this item covered by a Nikon warranty and, if so, for how long?

A: For the USA model, 1 year warranty. Not sure about the import model.

Q: 4. Will this work with the D7200?

A: I recently purchased the Nikon R1 unit for my Nikon d7200 and it works perfectly. I first watched several online videos before trying to set it up on my camera. That was extremely helpful. I understood how to set up everything in the menu. Putting it all together was a little bit of a challenge but once I got it up and working I am very please with it so far.

Q: 5. Is this flash system compatible with the Nikon D7500 and a Sigma Macro 105mm lens. And do I need exclusive to have a SU-800 Commander Unit?

A: There should not be any problems working with the above items. The Nikon D7500, as previous versions D7200, has a built in wireless flash commander option, and therefore it will commands the flash without the SU-800 unit. The flash system kit includes multiple adapters in many sizes, so no problem should be to attach the flash to Sigma 105mm lens. One issue you need to be aware of is the oddly batteries the R1C1 uses

Q: 6. will this flash work with the nikon d500 and sb5000?

A: Yes. Best performance with micro nikor 105mm VR

Q: 7. Is this ring flash compatible with Nikon D810? Will I need an adapter to use it with an 85mm or 105mm Nikkor micro lens? Thank you.

A: I have the R1C! which includes the SU800 wireless trigger which I use to remote control other flash units. The kit you reference should have rings which attach to 105 and 85 mm lenses....my system works with the D810. Without the SU800 you have to trigger the SB200s from your camera flash. Hope this helps.

Q: 8. is this flash compatible with Nikon d5600?

A: Yes, this is compatible with the Nikon D5600. I will post a link to the Nikon compatibility chart for the Nikon 4804 R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System. https://bit.ly/2jnOaCV

Q: 9. Is there any way to use this flash on a 55MM or 58MM macro lens.? Thank you!!

A: The SX-1 adapter ring threads directly to a lens using the 52 mm filter adapter threads. The 55MM macro lens should work just fine. The 58MM has a 72 MM filter, so that won't work directly. Nikon claims there are adapters for all lenses available.

Q: 10. Will this flash work with a Nikon D5300?

A: While the Nikon R1 system will work with the Nikon D5300 DSLR camera, it requires a flash or transmitter connected to the hot shoe of the camera compatible with Nikon's i-TTL CLS system to trigger the R1 system. Unfortunately, the built-in flash in the Nikon D5300 DSLR camera does not have a Commander mode built into the flash. As such, you will either have to purchase a flash that can be used as a commander flash in the camera's hot shoe, you may purchase the Nikon SU-800 as a wireless commander, or you may purchase the Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System, B&H # NIR1C1SS, which would come with the SU-800 for use on the Nikon D5300 DSLR camera.

I have been using the 4801 R1 with my D300 and have used several different lighting configurations. The results are as expected from Nikon. Well thought out, compact, flexible and enough power for the job. This is a miniature lighting studio. You just provide the backdrop and subject. Yes, you do have to read the instructions to get the best out of the system and experiment. Keep notes of what works or does not just like doing any other photography. I will also try to incorporate my SB-800 flash to add to the flexibility. I was fortunate enough to have had the strobes on when a Gila Monster wandered in our drive. It was easier to get head shots with the strobes so close as to having the SB-800 on top and possibly casting a shadow (yes, the strobe extension would help but then I would be lying on the ground holding the camera in one hand and the strobe in another). I doubt I will be getting as close with our rattlesnake population but I know the strobes have enough power for more distant subjects. With practice this will be a welcomed addition to my system.

This is a very good kit. Can control with D700 and add extra units too. Best part I can mount them on light stands or any thing with the base's built if screw. Much lighter mounted on my 105 f/2.8 then I anticipated. Kit box has room for one more complete flash unit, plus 3 more bags to carry ring assembly and individual flash heads.. Can't wait to use it at a botanical garden. So far experimenting has been a breeze, CLS works indoors consistently. Yes the D700 built in flash needs a hanging visible light blocker, which some might find annoying.

I'm using the R1 system primarily for macro photography of wildlife. I already had an SU800 so didn't by the R1C1 which includes it. It puts our just the right amount of light in the right places to enhance macro shots. It's very versatile since it's all compatible with the Nikon CLS

Nikons CLS is great system to build on. The close up speedlights work perfectly giving off a high quality of light. Kit comes with it's own case loaded with useful accessories. Additional speedlights can be added to ring. All work wirelessly

I recently took a trip to the island of Borneo and did some macro photography of fungi and small insects. Another person had a similar system and the images looked much better than I had. I probably will not travel with all of the parts (just the two flashes, the ring, and adapter for my lens) but it is great to have all of them. I found it easy to set up the system once I found the option to set my built-in flash on my D300s to commander mode in the E3 custom setting item.

I'm using a Nikon D90 with 60mm Macro to take intraoral and facial photos for orthodontics. At first, I'd purchased a wireless ring flash from a company who claims to be a dental photography guru. However, most photos came out with dark shadows or with un-matching colors. I'd even attended a course during one of the AAO thinking that perhaps the settings, F stops, etc. were the culprits of my photo problems. Thankfully, the flash broke down after 2 years of average use and ended up purchasing the R1 wireless flash with the rechargeable batteries. It was simply the best dollar per dollar that I'd spent in dental photography!! Nowadays, my photos come out nice, with the right amount of shadows, vivid colors and less focusing issues. Dear Colleagues, this ring flash will deliver!!
