The MPK 249 from Akai Professional is a performance pad and keyboard controller that combines software integration, enhanced workflow, and core technologies from the MPC workstations, with a comprehensive interface for manipulating virtual instruments, effect plug-ins, DAWs, and more. The keyboard is optimized to interface directly with a Mac or PC computer with USB power and plug-and-play connectivity.

The controller features forty-nine semiweighted, velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch, eight assignable knobs, faders, and switches, sixteen MPC-style pads with RGB feedback, and onboard transport buttons. Three banks expand the number of knobs, faders, and switches (up to twenty-four each), and four pad banks expand the number of pads (up to sixty-four total). Onboard octave up and down controls allows players to access the entire melodic range.

Genuine MPC functionality includes Classic MPC Swing, MPC Note Repeat, MPC Full Level, and 16 Levels. An arpeggiator, with adjustable resolution, range, and patterns, enables users to explore complex melodic ideas, effortlessly. The music production suite of software includes Ableton Live Lite and MPC Essentials for out-of-the-box music creation. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does it have midi aftertouch?

A: Yes, the Akai Professional MPK Mini MK3 25-Key MIDI Controller has aftertouch.

Q: 2. Can you use the MIDImix with an MPC One? Seems like a natural fit, but I'm not finding it.

A: Yes, the MIDImix can be used together with the MPC One. You will need to do a setup directly within the MPC One's MIDI hardware/mapping menu prior to operation.

Q: 3. What is the software compatible with this controller?

A: This controller can work with any professional DAW, including Ableton, Studio One, Pro Tools, Logic, etc.

Q: 4. What is the downloadable software that comes with this MIDI controller?

A: The downloadable software bundle includes the Complete Music Production Starter Kit with MPC Beats, six virtual instruments (Bassline, Tubesynth, Electric, Hybrid 3, Mini Grand, Velvet) and useful sounds such as kick drums, snares, 808s, melodic loops, and keygroup instruments for creating melodic lines.

Q: 5. I'm a beginner ... is it possible to use it with Roland S-1 as a keyboard? is there any usb to midi adapter for this?

A: The only way to use the Akai MPK Mini Mk3 25-Key MIDI Controller (White) is by using a computer in conjunction with any USB device that has a MIDI output, such as the Focusrite 4i4 (B&H # FOSCAR4I44G). When set properly, you can route the MIDI data from the computer to the S-1 via the MIDI out port on the device/interface with most MIDI-capable DAWs.

Q: 6. What sustian pedals does it support?

A: The Akai MPK mini MKII can be used with most sustain pedals that have a standard 1/4" TS connector such as the On-Stage KSP100 (B&H # ONKSP100), Auray - FP-S1L (B&H# AUFPS1L), Auray FP-P1L (B&H# AUFPP1L), or M-Audio - SP-1 (B&H# MASP1). If you click on the tab for "Accessories" on the item page, you'll see a list of options on the left side of the page. Click on the link for "Pedals" and you can view a selection of compatible sustain pedals and other for punch in/punch out that can be used with the MPK mini MKII.

Q: 7. Does it work with Magix Music Maker?

A: If the program allows for MIDI input, it should work. I keep this little keyboard in my backpack at all times and I use it almost daily. It's great for getting ideas out quickly on-the-go. That being said, if you're looking to get into music production and you're on a budget, I would recommend you look into Logic Pro X ($199 US) instead of Magix Music Maker. The last time I worked with someone and they opened up a session in Magix Music Maker was.... never. Logic is one of a number of industry standard DAWs and if price is a factor, I would highly recommend it. If price is not an issue, than I would recommend Ableton Live ($599 EUR) due to the unmatched workflow that it offers.

Q: 8. Does it come with pre-programmed drum beats?

A: No. There are no sounds in the unit and there are no sound output connectors. It is a controller only.

Q: 9. Is this compatible with fl studio and can control kontakt?

A: Hi as others have said about FL studios yes. I have used it with other software and it seems to work with them. Id get it. It is made well. The pads have a great feel to them. The keys have a good feel also. I have found that not all controls seem to function with it but that could be they either have to be assigned to a function or I have not gotten that far. For the money. Go for it.

Q: 10. Anyone have any experience with this and cubase? I am reading mixed things about it's compatibility with Cubase and El Capitan?

A: If you are having issues with the compatibility of these 2 products or are speculating on things you have read. The best thing to do would be to contact Akai support and ask them. As the manufacturer they will have far more accurate information than anyone else.

I bought this product for a couple reasons. 1 of them was size and portability. I wanted something that was useful, but also mobile. This Controller is about the size of a 15-17 laptop, so it can easily be stored in a back pack or set up in a small workspace. Since i am not a classically trained Pianist or have the dextarity for full sized keys, smaller sizes keys such as the ones found on this device highly appealed to me. Although, i feel like the action on the keys is a slight bit more stiff than I like, it is understandable that they aren't weighted like higher end keys, but that is to be expected. It will take some getting used to. I also purchased this controller because it featured a set of pads that will come in handy when creating drum beats. The overall design of this controller looks somewhat professional and fucntional. the feel of the knobs is a little light, and maybe a bit fragile, but I think they will last a while if i treat them well. The one piece that concerns me is the Red Knob on the top left. It sticks out from the face, and i worry that it might break if it gets roughed up in a backpack or in transit. The Rubber feet on the bottom of the device allow a firm and stable grip to a desk, so the device doesn't drift at all when playing or putting pressure on the keys, which is what you want. Overall, i am happy with my purchase.

While I'm new to the use of a midi controller, my Son, who is a NYC Music Producer and Nightclub DJ is coaching me on creating music on Garage Band. He as well thinks my Akai Controller is perfect for my particular use.

I was pleasantly surprised by the features of this small, affordable controller. It's certainly no full scale studio unit to wheel out in front of big name clients, but it's a fantastic way to dive in with pro level sound, controls and effects with a solid name backing up your purchase.

+ I bought this Akai MPK Mini MKII MIDI controller because I tend to have a creative itch that I have to scratch sometimes and lugging my Akai MPK25 can be tedious if you know the size and weight compared to this MPK Mini MKII, which is about 3 times the depth, twice the height, and a little wider too, but the weight is like quardruple at least. I work with FL Studio for producing music and this helps me mess around and build some songs. + What I love about it is not only its compactness, They give you enough controls to work with. You can't go all out, but you can get plenty done with this model when on the go. It fits in my Think Tank Urban Disguise 60 V2.0 bag, along with my 15' Sony VAIO laptop, Wacom Intuos Pro SE Medium tablet, and a Cooler Master cooling pad. Adds almost an unnoticeable weight. The pads are definitely more responsive than the MPK25 actually. + What I don't like about it is that the dials have a min and max. I honestly like the infinite dials. I tweaked my Lightroom to accept and map MIDI controller for use in Lightroom (ex: having an dial to control your basic adjustments). I can't really use this for that purpose, but the MPK 25 works very nicely for that reason. I'm excited that B&H is about to sell Loupedeck this upcoming August 2017! + Overall? This is a nice treat to have for anyone who messes with music producing. When I found out such a thing existed (I'm kinda late), I had to order one immediately!

Small in size width than a 13" MacBook Air, this lightweight keyboard and pad controller is beyond brilliant. Hard to believe so much in packed into it and how portable. Was a gift to my son, a trumpet player, for this live gigs. He's loving it.

This keyboard is perfect for production on-the-go. I keep it in my bag at all times in case I feel a wave of inspiration wash over me. I've used it with Logic Pro X and Ableton Live. For the price, this is a hard piece of gear to match. My only complaint is that the keys feel cheap. I've never actually had any problems with the keyboard and it works exactly as it should. The keys are smaller than regular sized keys, but to fit two octaves into a keyboard this small, some compromise had to be made. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a small keyboard for on-the-go purposes. If you're looking for a studio keyboard, I would recommend you save up a bit more $$$ and invest in something with 49+ keys.
