Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why there's dust inside the glasses? Isn't it weather resistance?

A: Tamron does state that the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VXD has moisture-resistant construction which has leak-resistant seals throughout the lens barrel to help protect your equipment for greater protection when shooting outdoors. However, leak-resistant is not the same as leak-proof, and there is the possibility that dust may enter the lens when you zoom the lens in and out, or minute dust may be inside the lens during construction. The dust should not negatively affect your image quality. However, if you feel the dust you see in your lens is affecting the lens performance, and if the lens was purchased within the last 30 days, you may contact our Customer Service Department to return the lens for an exchange or a refund.

Q: 2. Which is better to get for shooting occasional sport games and events, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 or the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4?

A: The Tamron lens is a better choice, given the faster aperture, important for shooting action.

Q: 3. Do you sell a tripod ring for it?

A: Unfortunately, there is no tripod ring for this lens.

Q: 4. What 3rd party lens hood will work for this lens?

A: This Heliopan 67mm lens hood (among others) is compatible with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E.

Q: 5. Will it be available for Canon FD?

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E, will not be available for Canon FD .

Q: 6. Does it focus correctly and silently with the Z9?

A: The Megadap ETZ21 Sony E-Mount Lens to Nikon Z-Mount Autofocus Adapter offers precise and consistant autofocus. All the autofocus modes and Af areas are availablefor stills and videos. Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E have slight vibration but it focus very smoothly.

Q: 7. Will this be able to shoot high school baseball? Not really outfield, just infield. Is 180mm enough reach for A7iii camera?

A: It really depends where you're seated and how big the field/gym is. 180mm will give you pretty decent shots but perhaps consider the Tamron 150-500mm lens that is in a similar price range, but will give you way more reach regardless of where you sit. If you have more questions, or need a more elaborated answer you can call our sales team at 800.606.6969 or start a live chat to better assist you here.

Q: 8. what is the minimum autofocus distance? yes i understand you can do 10" with manual focus. but what about af distane? thanks

A: The minimum focus distance 10.6". Auto focus or manual focus.

Q: 9. While you transition in the future to full frame therefore a stabilized body, would you recommend this lens for apsc at this point due to lack of stabilization?

A: You can certainly use this lens on a non-stabilized body until you get a stabilized body but make sure you shoot with a shutter speed of 1/125 or faster to prevent camera shake.

Q: 10. Is it safe to put this lens on an a7iii, on a tripod, racked out to 180 without it damaging the integrity of the a7iii frame?

A: There is no issue in using this lens at 180mm on an a7iii and placing the a7iii on a tripod.

For years I avoided Tamron lenses, since they seemed 'second best' and 'unsexy' compared to the Sony GM lenses or brands like Leica and Zeiss. I just couldn't get excited about buying a Tamron lens.

But this lens has completely changed my initial impression of the brand.

The image quality is absolutely superb. Not only are images tack-sharp, but the bokeh has a very pleasant character to it. Images have more of a 'prime look' than I was expecting from a zoom lens.

Also, the size and weight are extraordinary, given that the closest competition, the Sony 70-200 GM f2.8 OSS II, is 190 grams heavier (which is also impressive). The Tamron is also 156.5mm long, versus the Sony at 200mm. It's amazing that Tamron has packed such great image quality into such a small package.

One of my favorite features is the close focusing distance. You can focus up to 0.3 meters away! At 70mm, this means you can do macro-ish photos. I was able to sell my rarely-used macro lens since most of my macro needs are easily covered by this lens, especially if I crop into the image using Super 35 mode. The Sony 70-200 GM, on the other hand, can focus at 0.4 meters, which is also very good but noticeably inferior to the Tamron. The real-world difference is significant.

Are there negatives? Well, I prefer the overall aesthetics of the Sony lens. The Tamron looks fine but isn't going to win any design contests. Also, the image stabilization of the Tamron doesn't seem to play well with my Sony A7RV body - when both the lens and camera have stabilization turned on, the image in the viewfinder jiggles slightly when I take a photo. This doesn't affect the photo negatively at all, but neither does it seem 'normal.' It makes me a little concerned that the stabilization of the lens may be 'stressing' the camera somewhat. Other than this quibble, however (which may be eventually resolved via firmware), this lens is absolutely stellar, and at an almost ridiculously low price.

Glad I brought this lens. I’ve used it for baseball photography. The f2 comes in handy in low light, nice background blur. Super quick focus very happy. Would recommend.

So happy I got this lens. Delivers most of the punch you'd get from Sony's 70-200 f/2.8 GM lens, but at less than half the price and light enough to carry around.

Excellent lens. Image Stabilization is a great addition since I use it with FX6. Much better then the original in every way. It is sharp, fast and produces pleasing images with nice bokeh. The size of the lens is another plus, it is smaller then most 70-200 that I've seen.

Wanted to get this lens ever since it was introduced. Love the styling compared to the original and the image quality is top-notch. Focuses very fast on my A7III. Overall a great fit for any A7 body.
