The Tiffen 4.5" Mounted Warm Linear Polarizer Filter can be applied to create a warm cast over an entire image while helping to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

The warming effect of this filter can be obtained under daylight when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected. This filter's overall coloration reflects a mired shift value of +45.

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus, is non-coated, and has approximately 40% average light transmission. Constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, it is mounted for use in third-party or custom filter holders. No front or rear threads are included on this filter's ring, or mount.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface

Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light

Can add a warm cast over an entire image when used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors

Polarizing effect is strongest when used at a 90° angle from the sun

Recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus

Non-coated

Approximately 40% average light transmission

3x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.6 stops

Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity

Made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch

Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight

Padded pouch for storage and transport

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I'm buying a polarizer for manual focus lens, will focus peaking work with a linear polarizer? I'm using a Sony a6300.

A: Yes-focus peaking will work.

Q: 2. Can someone tell me the difference between this product and Tiffen's product?(a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457543-REG/Tiffen_67LLPOL_67mm_Low_Light_Polarizing.html/a)

A: The Hoya linear polarizing filter was designed for use on older film cameras - See the following description of a linear polarizing filter - (Two kinds of polarizing filters are the PL (Linear Polarizing) andPL-CIR (Circular Polarizing) filters which have the same effect ofreducing glare, however, there are differences in the way each worksin combination with your specific camera so it is important toresearch and choose the correct version of filter for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to splitthe light (a.k.a. beam) entering the viewfinder in order tocalculate exposure and focusing distance. PL filters can sometimesinteract with these light controlling devices to give unpredictableexposure or focusing. If your camera, whether auto or manual, isequipped with this kind of device, we recommend using a PL-CIR filter. Both types of filters allow you not only to remove unwantedreflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc., butalso filter out atmospheric haze enabling colors to become moresaturated and appear clearer with a much sharper contrast. These effects will prove to be invaluable to photographers at anylevel of interest.)

Q: 3. Is there one or a quantity of four filters per package?

A: This would be one linear polarizer measuring 4 X 4.

Q: 4. I have a Nikon Coolpix L340. I am aware that it's lens is 35mm. Is this polarizer applicable to that particular camera?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX L340 digital camera does not have filter threads on the lens. So you cannot use any filters on this camera.

Q: 5. I am going to use this on an old Konica auto S2. Is this filter appropriate for use on a range finder and will the threads pitch match on the lens? Thanks.

A: I was fairly successful using it without checking through the live view on a Leica 240 MP. I often photograph in a constant desert or sun lit canyon/river area. I first use the filter to look at the scene without the camera lens attached. I could tell where the max effect was in relation to the sun direction (I live above the northern 45 degree lat) and then know that that direction was best for the max. I used old film leica's in a similar manner many years ago too...AJZ

Q: 6. Will this filter help with glare on a spotting scope?

A: Yes it will reduce reflected light off water and other reflective surfaces and, depending on the angle of the sun, make the sky a much darker blue.

Q: 7. How many stops does this reduce the exposure?

A: 1.5 to 2 stops.

Q: 8. What does turning the filter do? How can the effects be seen if it is used on a twin-lens camera?

A: Spinning the front of the Hoya 43mm Linear Polarizer Filter effects the level and angle of polarization. The only way to see the effect is to look through the lens that the filter is used on.

Q: 9. Can I use this filter on a Lee filter system holder?

A: There are two industry standard nominal filter thicknesses: 2 mm and 4 mm. The Lee holder, while normally set up for 2 mm, can, with the addition of longer screws, can accommodate 4 mm filters as well.

Q: 10. How do I use 2 linear polarizes as a ND filter on my Canon 6D ? Also will it be compatible with this camera ?

A: Two liner polarizers rotated with the polarization of each at right angles to the other can make a very effective ND filter. The problem is that any undesired rotation of either of the lenses, either by screwing them on or by rotating the polarized glass accidentally, will change the density to something you were perhaps not expecting. Why not just buy a ND filter of the desired density? They don't cost that much. If your lens has a 77 mm objective, the filters should be compatible, no matter what camera you are using.
