Of course you could use it as a portrait and it will, no doubt, be tack sharp giving pleasant bokeh with the 11 blade round aperture shooting at f/2.8. But it is more than just a portrait lens (on a full frame...a crop frame may be too tight), it is a true macro lens which requires exacting optics and 1:1 magnification or better. In other words, on a FF camera, this lens would be fine for portraits.
