Q: 1. what is the difference between this and rode videomic pro rycote. which is the best?
A: The Rode NTG-2 and and Videomic pro a great shotgun microphones. The NTG-2 features and XLR connection which would be ideal fro pro-users and the videomic is outfitted with a 3.5mm connection suitable for consumer to prosumer users.
Q: 2. How do I know if the mic is on?
A: As soon as you put the battery in then it's turned on. You'll need to monitor it some how, either with headphones or some kind of battery level display. I always take the battery out after i'm done using the mic for a day because if not it will just drain the battery dead in storage because it's always on. What I do is I hook the mic up to my zoom H1. You just need a small XLR to 1/8th input and then you're able to monitor the levels with headphones attached to the zoom H1. I hope this helps.
Q: 3. Can I leave the AA battery in or do I need to remove it when I'm done recording?
A: You can leave a AA battery inside of the RODE NTG2 Shotgun Microphone as long as you will be using the mic again within a few days. Otherwise, it is always best to remove the battery from an electronic device that will not be used for a while in order to prevent damage from problems caused by the battery leaking.
Q: 4. So with my black magic camera as long as i have the battery in the mic i won't need phantom power correct?
A: Yes, this is correct. It will run out quite quickly. Between 4-6 hours.
Q: 5. What is an affordable Pre-amp to use with this mic for a Nikon D750?
A: I bought the Tascam DR060D MarkII and have been happy with it. I've never used a pre-amp or recorder so it was a bit of an uphill climb to learn a bit about audio production. Now that I've experimented with it for some time I'm quite comfortable with it. It eats up batteries so you definitely want to use rechargeable batteries. I bought a LifeCharge external 16,800 mAh external battery. There's also a power option that works off of house current.Curtis Judd is knowledgeable about audio and he reviews the 60D MkII. You can search for his channel on YouTube. He also has a video wherein he reviews several recorders options. Sorry B&H doesn't want links in my answer.Good luck.
Q: 6. how do i change the battery in a NTG-2 microphone?
A: The bottom third of the microphone unscrews and the battery can be changed from in there.
Q: 7. Does a windscreen come with this mic?
A: It comes with a standard foam cover, which is not designed to block wind interference. You'll want to get a 'windscreen' also known as a 'deadcat' for a shotgun mic to reduce wind pickup.
Q: 8. Does the Rode NTG2 have an on/off switch?
A: The Rode NTG-2 features no on/off switch. It is recommended that you remove the batteryfrom the unit when the microphone is not in use as it is always drawing current.
Q: 9. I want to ceiling mount this. Will the springs/joints work with gravity working in the opposite direction?
A: This boom arm is not designed to be mounted from the ceiling. The clamp that attaches to the arm to the desk will not secure the arm to hang upside down. The clamp needs to be mounted upright so the arm inserts from above the clamp.
Q: 10. Does anyone know the shipping weight of the kit?
A: The shipping weight for this kit is approximately 1.10 lb.
