The matte gray MK 8 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps is a true dipole (bidirectional) transducer, operating with a single diaphragm. Its main axis is at a right angle to the capsule, and is marked at 0 and 180° with a red and a black dot, respectively. Both the microphones that are included are phase-matched.

When M/S stereo recordings are made, the 0° axis normally faces to the left as viewed from behind the microphone setup. The 8 engraved on the top of the housing should be aligned on its side so as to appear horizontal, at a precise right angle to the mid capsule. The microphone should be placed directly above or beneath the M channel microphone, and as close to it as possible. The sound quality of this capsule is clear and neutral. The frequency response rolls off above 16 kHz.

When this capsule is used as a spot microphone, care must be taken to avoid picking up early reflections or unwanted direct sound from its rear, since sound arriving from the back is picked up with full level but reversed in polarity. This could result in partial cancellation of the intended sound, which can lead to comb-filter effects at higher frequencies.

The directivity index of a figure-8 pattern is the same as that of a cardioid. The figure-8 has a rear lobe equal in sensitivity to its front lobe, and this exactly makes up the quantitative difference. However, in normally reverberant settings, the sound reaching a figure-8's rear lobe will be delayed and dispersed to a considerably greater extent; the reflected sound will typically be subject to far more high-frequency absorption as well.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this mic fit in the skb 1209 case? I read here that it won't due to its longer length compared to the other model shotgun mic

A: The SKB iSeries Waterproof Case for Zoom H6 Recorder and Mic Modules available on our site is customized to fit the Zoom SGH-6 Shotgun Microphone which is slightly smaller than the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone.

Q: 2. Can this remote be used for the Zoom H6?

A: The correct remote to be used with the Zoom H6 is the Auray RC-ZH6. The RC-ZH5 is designed for the H5.

Q: 3. Is this mic wireless?

A: The VocoPro MK-58 PRO Vocal Microphone is not a wireless mic.

Q: 4. Can you directly ship it to Kathmandu, Nepal? I am paying it from Australia Please.

A: You may calculate your actual shipping options/order totals by adding the items you want to a shopping cart. It will then list the shipping options, descriptions, ETA's and fees to your location.

Q: 5. Will this work with the Zoom F1 field recorder?

A: Yes, I did a test and they are compatible.

Q: 6. Is it compatible with the new H8 ?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. Is the zoom VRH-8 ambisonic microphone compatible with the zoom H-6?

A: No, it is not.

Q: 8. which one is best zoom ssh-6 or zoom sgh-6 ? if ssh-6, can i use only directional separately if i don,t want the ambience sound?

A: Both the Zoom SSH-6 and SGH-6 are excellent mic options to use with the Zoom H5/H6 recorders. Which you use depends on your application. The SSH-6 is stereo, and the SGH-6 is mono. The stereo mic will be great for recording ambience, special effects, music at a distance. The mono mic is useful for dialogue recording, especially in high noise environments.

Q: 9. The ssh model is described as having an hyper-cardioid polar pattern and the sgh a super-cardioid polar pattern. Is there a functional difference?

A: The main difference between the two models is that the SGH-6 uses three internal mic capsules and has a supercardioid polar pattern for a tight, focused response and dual-mono output. The SSH-6 is a stereo mid-side shotgun microphone with two internal mic capsules which each pickup sound from a different direction in order to create a wider stereo image with more ambience than a mic that picks up sound from one direction. One capsule from the SSH-6 is extremely focused on picking up sound on center and can be combined with its bidirectional capsule which is able to pickup sound from the left or right side to create a spacious stereo image that can be mono-compatible. For example, you can record dialogue with the center microphone and then mix in the desired amount of ambient sound captured by the side microphone. Both models are very good for picking up dialog. The SGH-6 is for one direction and SSH-6 is also capable of stereo imaging.

Q: 10. Will this work the Zoom H8?

A: Yes, this will work with the H8.
