The MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite Flash from Canon is designed for use with Canon macro lenses for close-up photography. With a guide number 34' at ISO 100 per side, its twin tube design allows each flash tube to fire independently, or simultaneously to provide a combined guide number of 46' at ISO 100. White LED focusing lamps and two types of modeling lights allow for accurate previewing of the light's effect.

An illuminated dot-matrix LCD screen lets you make adjustments to the flash in both bright- and low-light situations. The MR-14EX II has 12 custom functions, and supports wireless E-TTL when linked with one or more Speedlite 600EX-RT flashes. The ring flash can be powered by 4x AA batteries or an optional CP-E4 battery pack.

This unit is compatible with the Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, and MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo lenses. If using the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, the separate Macrolite Adapter 67 is required; if using the EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM lens, the separate Macrolite Adapter 72C is required.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to shoot portraits with this. Is it large enough to use the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens? Or the Sigma 50 1.4 Art lens?

A: This flash is not compatible with Sigma lenses.

Q: 2. Is this compatible with the Canon R5 with the use of a filter adapter?

A: Yes, you can adapt the Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite to other lenses via the use of a step-up/down ring with a Macrolite adapter. Please be aware that with some lenses this might cause a slight vignetting, but apart from that, usage should be relatively seamless.

Q: 3. Do I need an adapter for Canon Macro 60mm lens?

A: No, it fits directly on the 60mm without an adapter.

Q: 4. Is the MR-14Xcompatible with the new Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens?

A: Yes this will be able to be used on the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens.

Q: 5. Are there other ring adapters that I can use for other sized lenses than the macrolite adapter sizes? For example, a 62mm macro lens.

A: Yes there are. If you regard the Accessories tab on this flash's product link, under the header Other flash accessories you will see adapter ring options for 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 72mm. To adapt it to a lens with a 62mm filter thread size, you would need to purchase the 67mm adapter ring for the flash, and then use a 62-67mm step-up ring to connect to that. See the two links below for the required adapter rings to connect it to your 62mm lens:http://bhpho.to/1frDLaahttp://bhpho.to/1lVIgRi

Q: 6. Can this be used with Canon Mark 11 Lense 24-105mm 4Lwith IS ?

A: Probably not, to use the flash on any lens other than the original 100mm F2.8 non-IS lens you need a macro lite ring adapter and BH doesn't carry a 77mm one so I don't think Canon makes one in that size. The only sizes listed are 52, 58, 67, and 72mm. The 67 is the most popular as it fits the 100mm F2.8 IS macro lens. The 24-105mm lens has a 77mm filter thread size

Q: 7. Does this work with EOS rebel T1i (500D)

A: Yes, this ring lite flash is fully compatible with the Canon EOS Rebel T1i camera. You may wish to check the specific lens you intend on using it with to make sure it has a filter size that is compatible with the optional adapter rings for the flash to make sure they fit.

Q: 8. Do I need an adapter for use on a Canon Macro EF 1:2.8 L IS USM lens? It is 67 mm.

A: You would need the 67 Macrolite Adapter from Canon (B&H# CAMLA67) to use the MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash with a lens that has a 67mm filter thread.

Q: 9. I have a 58mm sized Canon EF 100mm macro (non-IS) lens. Do I need to buy an adapter to use this flash?

A: You can use the Sensei 58-67mm Aluminum Step-Up Ring (B&H # SESUR5867) in combination with the Canon 67 Macrolite Adapter (B&H # CAMLA67) for lenses with a 58mm thread.

Q: 10. Can I use this macro ring with a 50mm?

A: You could use the MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash with a 50mm lens. You will need an adapter ring, the size of which will depend on the filter thread size of the lens.

Have had the mt-24-ex twin-lite for some years, but find it somewhat cumbersome and potentially fragile in the field, although it is excellent in the studio. Have only had the mt-14 for a short time, but it works well with with my 5D-III and all of my macro lenses (65mm, 100mm, and 180mm), although all three required the purchase of macro adapters to make the mr-14ex fit in front of a UV filter. No learning curve, since it operates exactly like the mt-24ex.

Replaced my sun pack macro light with this product. It uses less batteries and the flash is more consistent between shots. Using this product for dental photos. Provides excellent lighting for dark areas such as inside the mouth. The only negative is at its a little heavy compared to my sun pack flash.

Used the Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite flash on my Canon 7D and 50D using a 60 mm Macro. Illumination is well controlled and does not overpower or bleach out the subject at macro magnifications. Provides a soft illumination with no heavy shadowing behind the subject while shooting at elevated angles. Very pleased with quality Canon accessories on my Canon cameras. There are cheaper products on the market however, I think Canon products work in a vastly superior way on quality Canon SLR's. You unfortunately just have to get used to paying the higher pricing.
