The Canon EF mount Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a fast standard-length prime designed to achieve high optical performance through the incorporation of both three Special Low Dispersion glass elements and one molded glass aspherical element. These elements, coupled with an advanced optical design, work to minimize sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberrations in order to provide high image sharpness and clarity. The lens' large diameter and floating system also help to correct for vignetting to ensure maintained peripheral brightness. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity.

A Hyper Sonic AF Motor, along with an optimized AF algorithm, produces quiet, smooth, and fast autofocus performance that benefits this lens' use in a wide variety of situations. This AF motor also permits full-time manual focusing control for refined precision by simply turning the focus ring at any time.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.

This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for axial chromatic aberration throughout the entire focusing range. This helps to ensure maintained image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.

In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

By employing a floating system, the distance between glass elements is adjusted during focusing in order to limit the amount of lens movement required when shooting. This floating system helps to realize a minimum focusing distance of 1.3' with a maximum magnification of 1:5.6. Additionally, this design also contributes to high detail rendering capabilities throughout the entire focusing range.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.

  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
  • The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
  • The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
  • The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens work on the 6D Mark II? Because the Sigma 35mm is not compatible

A: Yes, it will. The 6D is a full frame camera and this lens is one of my absolute favorite. It is tack sharp. Highly recommend any of the Sigma Art lenses

A: yes

Q: 3. How do owners deal with the size of this lens? I want to purchase it, but it's the same size and heavier compared to my Canon 24 to 105 zoom lens. Is the image quality sufficiently better than the Canon F/1.2L to offset carrying the bigger lens? Thank you. Jerry

A: It's not that bad. It's aslightly heavy BUT built like a TANK! Best lens I've ever used and better than the Canon 1.2!

Q: 4. How is the autofocus on this compared to Sony lenses for new sony cameras A7s iii, FX9 etc?

A: Autofocusing with the Sony E-Mount version of this lens is on par with what Sony lenses offer. One should expect equal performance.

Q: 5. How would you rate the bokeh of this lens?

A: Overall, from 1 to 10, this is a definitely 10 rate! I have intl competition winning images as well as publications from this lens. Highly recommend!

Q: 6. Will the autofocus on this work for my Nikon D5300 if I get the F mount? This is all that Nikon said about my camera body and compatability...Autofocus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses. Autofocus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses (IX NIKKOR and lenses for the F3AF are not supported), and AI-P lenses. Non-CPU lenses can be used in mode , but the camera exposure meter will not function; the electronic rangefinder can be used with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster

A: Yes, of course it will...even better than the Nikon version!

Q: 7. Will this fit my Canon 5D Mark II or will I need an additional mount?

A: Thank you for your interest in Sigma products. Yes, the 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon will fit on your Canon 5D Mark II.

Q: 8. Does this lens (Sigma 50mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art Q&A) have hard stops for the focus wheel? Looking to use for video on S1h and would prefer a lens that doesn't just spin continuously in manual focus mode. Thanks!

A: This lens does not have a hard stop.

Q: 9. I am hesitant with Sigma 35mm and 50mm? I need good bokeh and with 5D iii body. Please suggest.

A: Don't be hesitant. I have both for my Mark iii. Love the 50, def use it more than the 35. Everyone wants good bokeh lol, get it!! I just got the Sigma 70-200. That rocks too.

Q: 10. what lowepro case fits this lens and hood? the recommended Lowepro Compact Zoom Lens Case 8x12cm doesn't fit lens hood as

A: We recommend removing and flipping the hood around when traveling with lenses like the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF, as per the picture on the Lowepro Compact Zoom Lens Case 8x12cm (Black). But if you want a case with more space you can use the Lowepro Small-Medium Zoom Lens Case 9x16cm (Black), BH # LOLP36979.

This is my first professional lens purchase and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Very crisp and sharp, great in low light. Literally no complaints. I did countless hours of research before purchase, by far the best bang for the buck and I'd say that it's better than even most lenses in the 3k-4k range. If you're thinking about getting this, just do it.

I use a canon 60D and I bought this lens to use for indoor basketball my grandkids played in. I am a photo enthusiast and I found it hard to get used to (fast action focus) but once I learned how to use it I was totally impressed. When I use if for outdoor wildlife the clarity it just beyond belief!!

There are plenty of choices in a 50mm out there. I had discounted my need for another fifty as I already own the nifty 50 (f1.8) and have worked with the f1.4 (non L) Canon 50. After using a Canon L f1.2 I realized just how much I was missing. So when I decided that my Canon 5D Mkiii really deserved a nice prime, I remembered the buzz about the Sigma Art 50 and went back for a closer look. So Glad I did. The Sigma Art 50 sits in that perfect spot of being high quality at low price. Autofocus is almost instant. Clarity is tack sharp. Yes its heavy... but I don't really care about that and I have plenty of Lowepro bags to carry it in. If you are on the fence about this lens vs. the Canon L f1.2 I'd say there is no real arguement. Unless you are seriously considering an Outus, I think this lens is right in the sweet spot.
