A: The center column does not (intentionally) detatch. The base plate that holds the center column in place is made of plastic, however, and is prone to breaking at a very thin and weak point.

A: Yes the stand can hold an Einstein 640 monolight with a softbox up to 2 x 3 ft safely and securely.
