Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. So this actually receives an audio signal through the hot shoe? I don't need to plug a 1/8 cable into the camera like other mic adapters I use with the GH4?

A: You are correct.

Q: 2. Can you mount the XLR1 'backwards' so that the bulk of the unit hangs off the rear of the camera? Need to fit with existing accs

A: Unfortunately, the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter cannot be mounted backwards.

Q: 3. Does this work with the GH5S?

A: Yes, but we should ask why isnt B&H answering these types of questions.

Q: 4. Does Zoom make this in 32bit float wide dynamic range for Panasonic Lumix? (like an F3, but sync'd with no cables).

A: No, Zoom does not offer any XLR adapters for cameras and there are no XLR adapters that we are aware of that have the ability to record audio directly, the XLR adapters are simply used to provide an XLR connection for a camera that does not have XLR inputs. The resolution for recording audio is determined by the capabilities of the camera or a recorder. A recorder like the Zoom F3 Portable Field Recorder does have the ability to record audio at 32-bit, but it does not have the ability to connect to the camera without using cables and the audio recorded by the camera would be limited to the capabilities of the camera. So the F3 would be able to record 32-bit float but it would be recorded to an SD card. Unless the camera is capable of recording 32-bit float audio, the audio from the recorder would not be transferred at the same resolution to the camera, even if it were connected using a cable or cable-free connection. However, you can utilize the timecode functions on the F3 and a compatible camera to accurately sync audio and video in post production using timecode.

Q: 5. Will this provide the required 60db gain for the Shure SM7B?

A: A spec for the preamp gain available from the Panasonic DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter has not been provided by the manufacturer.

Q: 6. I have a cage for my GH3 and would like to use it on the GH5. Will there be some type of adapter to plug the XLR1 in the mic port ?

A: The DMW-XLR1 will only work by attaching directly to the GH5's hot shoe mount. It is unlikely that you'll be able to use a form fitting cage for the GH3 with the GH5 and have this adapter connected. However once the GH5 is released it will only be a matter of time before 3rd Parties offer cages designed to handle the camera with the DMW-XLR1 attached to it. Please keep an eye on our website for new product listings.

Q: 7. Does the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 work with the Panasonic D7? of not what comparable product does?

A: If you are referring to the Lumix G7, I am sorry it is not. Instead you would need to look at a product that connects to the 3.5mm mic input, such as the Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Input / 4-Track Multi-Track Field Recorder, BH #TADR60DMKII. https://bhpho.to/2ewFSVe

Q: 8. Are there any sort of adapter cables available that offset this unit as it interferes with the cage handle?

A: The DMW-XLR1 XLR must be in the hot shoe of the GH5 in order to function. There is no way currently to allow it to be mounted elsewhere. All is not lost for you can consider an XLR Audio Adapter such as the Beachtek DXA-SLR Pure Passive Audio Adapter for DSLR Cameras B&H # BEDXASLRPURE. This can be mounted independently of the camera on the cage. Then you run a cable from it to the camera. Or you can consider a independent recorder that will give you the best possible sound. (The audio from it can also be recorded in the camera as well.) Here is one possibility. Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder for DSLR B&H # TADR60DMKII. Q: 9. Would this work with Leica SL2 since it works well with S1 series cameras ?

A: No, this Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter would not work with s1 series cameras.

Q: 10. If I connect this device to the hotshoe on a GH6 camera, how do I set the camera to receive the audio signal from it? Or does it automatically detect it?

A: Hi Larry! The camera will automatically detect the XLR adaptor and use the microphone. -G
