Essential, Amazing , Accurate.

It works as advertised, not question. The caveat is that if you want more out of it (a calibration to your own setup perhaps) you need to purchase a very expensive piece of cardboard (exposure target II), but on the other side you could rent if for the weekend for half the price it costs to buy it and own it forever...now you know ;/

Upgraded from my 758-DR to this new 858. Love the touch screed and how fast and easy this is to use with really only the need to use the touch screen the vast majority of the time. Has the features to help me get into some DSLR Video and for High Speed Flash. Now if it just had a radio module to control my Canon Speedlites it would be even more awesome.

I was looking for a small and accurate meter after my Minolta "died" after over 30 years of service. After a couple of weeks using this meter, I know that I made the right choice.

Save yourself time, test shots, shutter actuations and plain ole' looking unprofessional trying to get your exposure accurate.
To add the exposure averaging tool is also another life saver when shooting landscapes.

I bought the Sekonic L-308X-U Flashmate light meter and I would highly recommend it to all of my industry friends. I find that it is essential for many conditions that we as professionals and amateurs encounter. The Sekonic L-308X-U allows me to virtually eliminate using my cameras meter and trust it for all readings. on a very small area now using spot focusing. This meter enables me to find the best exposure in other conditions, too, because it measures the incident exposure as well. This meter is a great investment that will not break the back and allows me to put it in my pocket as it is very portable and convenient. The added light for dim areas is a benefit as well.

Sekonic at its best

Originally I was going to pick up a second hand sekonic L-758, but then decided that the new features of this meter were worth spending a bit more. One feature I've used extensively so far is the spot meter function that lets you average 9 readings in memory. This has really come in handy when working with film that is usually a bit more difficult to work with such as Adox CMS 20 and Fuji Velvia 50. Shooting Adox CMS 20 in 4x5 and Velvia 50 in both 4x5 and 8x10 has a high cost per sheet, and this light meter helps to ensure that errors in exposure are rare if at all. Also, the fact that it now runs on a standard size of AA Batteries is a nice perk.

The screen is from the days of Tetris but works well. Overall the unit is good. Recommend! Speed with flashes increases in hundreds times. It's like moving from a Volkswagen to a Lamborghini.
