Retro 400S from Rollei is a panchromatic black and white negative film featuring an extended infrared sensitivity within the range of 650-750nm for producing unique halation effects, which can be controlled by exposure. Its nominal speed of ISO 400/27° offers extensive versatility and latitude, which is further complemented by high sharpness, contrast, and acutance. The film's polyester base has been tested to an LE-500 (life expectancy of 500 years) archival rating, and additionally, this clear base is particularly well suited for scanning applications.

This is one roll of 36-exposure 35mm film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the outcome with a Lee #87 be comparable to a screw on r72 filter (Lee better with multiple lenses)?

A: Yes, I believe the 72 filter is just as good to use as the 87 filter. I hope that helps.

Q: 2. Is this film sensitive to the wavelenhth at Hydrogen Alpha (656.281 nm) what are its reciprocity characteristics and is it generally useful for astrophotography?

A: Rollei INFRARED has an infrared range of (650 – 750nm). According to Rollei, the reciprocity is 1.43. IR film needs IR light which is more available during the day. Shooting it at night would be experimental.

Q: 3. retro 80 suitable for reversal processing?

A: I have not reverse-processed this film, but the process can be done with virtually any traditional B&W emulsion. I would think that this film would be a very good choice for reversal processing as it is fine grained, has a clear base, and tends to have relatively high contrast.

Q: 4. Is this batch still made in the Belgium factory or some where else?

A: Country of origin is still Germany, has not changed for many years.

Q: 5. I have an old (1986) Minolta 35mm film camera. Will this film work in that camera?

A: The following Minolta cameras have an infrared film counter, which will fog (pre-expose) infrared film: Maxxum 70, 50, 7, 5, 4, 3, XTsi, HTsi, HTsi Plus, STsi, QTsi, 300si, 400si, 500si. Older Minolta cameras such as the SRT101 and similar mechanical cameras can be safely used with infrared film.

Q: 6. expired date?

A: This film is fresh dated, at least a year.

Q: 7. How would the camera's exposure / auto-metering be affected by using a fill-flash covered with a 720nm filter (as primary light source)?

A: The exposure would be cut down by quite a bit. It doesn't make sense to shoot in auto. You will have to shoot in manual mode and test by trial and error.

Q: 8. Given that this film is less sensitive to IR light than visible light, what ASA should it be shot at for infrared photography?

A: It depends on the filter you use with the Rollei Infrared 400 Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures). Some say, exposing the film at a maximum of ISO 25 and using an R72 dark red infrared filter or deeper infrared filter. Note it takes experimentation and trial and error

Q: 9. Would this film work for IR flash photography at night with an infrared flash?

A: Rollei Infrared 400 Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) is suitable for night photography with an infrared flash.

Q: 10. Where do you send it for processing? Does it get processed as B&W film?

A: Definitely can develop as BW... I process the BW but I would vouch for The Darkroom Lab if you have anything complex or want high quality
