Q: 1. Besides cost, is there any reason for buying this set up as opposed to this?: a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID_External_Hard.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID_External_Hard.html/a

A: The link you provided is the same as the item you commented on. Please let us know which second item you would like us to compare for you.

Q: 2. How can I use this drive on a computer that only has USB and Firewire connections?

A: You cannot. It will only work on a computer that supports Thunderbolt, or Thunderbolt 2.

Q: 3. can you reformat from raid 0 to raid 1?

A: This G-RAID can not be configured to RAID 1.

Q: 4. Do I need a backup replacement drive available in case one of the 4 drives fails so I can do a fast recovery to full operations? If so what would I order?

A: It is always best to have a spear drive just in case. This Buffalo DriveStation Quad 24TB 4-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Array (4 x 6TB) would be able to support the Buffalo 6TB 3.5" HDD found here ---- https://bhpho.to/3slXbMY .BH #BUOPHD60QH • MFR #OP-HD6.0QH

Q: 5. can it be attached to the modem as a backup device ?

A: No this would not work.

Q: 6. Where's the fan sound? Ive been using this unit for 3 days and feels a little hot, but the fan doesnt start. Also I connected my 2nd display to the TB port of this unit and doesn't work... Am I missing something?

A: Just turned on my 8TB G-RAID TB. There is a startup sound, then it has only a very faint sound, which I assume is the fan but I'm not really sure. I searched the G-Tech support pages but couldn't find anything specific to the G-RAID fan. There was something about another model, G-Safe, having a fan that only comes on when the drive overheats. But I don't know if that applies to the G-RAID too. I have a vague memory that my drive case sometimes feels a little warm and maybe reading somewhere that that's OK. But if yours feels really hot, you might want to just return it and ask to exchange it for another one. Also, do you have at least 4 inches of free space around all sides of the drive? I think that's supposed to be especially important in the rear, in terms of good ventilation.

Q: 7. Hi Guys, does this drive show up as 2 drives on the desktop ? My Pro Tools software requires two seperate drives, one for video and one for audio. Thanks

A: Hi, as mentioned above out of the box the G-RAID is set up as RAID 0 and will be seen as one drive. You can delete the RAID in Disk Utility, creating a JBOD, and then format each drive individually. (Call one Audio, and one Video.)If you are running El Capitan the drives will appear as individual drives in Disk Utility and you will be able to format each drive to create your Audio and Video drive.

Q: 8. does it works with european dc power standards (50HZ - 220v)

A: Yes, the G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Dual-Drive Storage System will work with voltage from 100-240v AC at 50/60Hz without an issue. Please note that it ships with a US power cord, and you will need an adapter to allow it to fit into a European outlet.

Q: 9. Does this bay have USB 3.1? The title says 3.1 but all the specs say 3.0.

A: usb 3.0

Q: 10. Does G-RAID 8TB means the actual capacity is 4TB?

A: If you leave the unit as RAID 0, then you will have 8TB capacity, and the device would be used as a working drive. If you reconfigure it as RAID 1 (mirror) then you will have 4TB of useable space, and a duplicate of your data on the 2nd drive.
