Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am confused as to the purpose of this cable. Doesn't the wireless commander attached to the Multi-function hot shoe, why would we also need this cable?

A: The Sony FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver is designed to trigger Sony-compatible flash units wirelessly. While there is a Multi-Interface hot shoe on the top of the Sony FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver, there is a cold shoe with no contacts (but with a 1/4 -20 tripod socket) on the bottom of the unit. While the cold shoe allows the Sony FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver to sit in the camera's Multi-Interface hot shoe, there are no pins or contacts for communication to the camera. It would simply sit in the hot shoe on the top of the camera for convenience when using it as a camera remote trigger (as well as on a tripod or light stand via the aforementioned 1/4 -20 connector). As such, if you wish to use the Sony FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver to trigger your camera's shutter release remotely instead of triggering a flash, you must electronically connect the Sony FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver to your camera via the Sony VMC-MM1 Multi Terminal Cable listed above.

Q: 2. I need a charger replacement for DSC-HX80, will this be compatible?

A: The Sony VMC-MM1 Multi-Terminal Cable is incompatible with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX80 Digital Camera and not for charging the battery. Instead, I suggest getting the Sony BC-TRV Travel Charger, B&H # SOBCTRV.

Q: 3. Where is the setting for the Phantom power? I have gone thru the menus and buttons and don't see anything on Phantom power.

A: Hamjat....there is only a plug for Phantom power. There are no settings. I plugged into my camera and took power directly through that supply source. There should be some explanation included in the brochure, but as you noted, there isn't. I wish I could be of better assistance for you.Michael

Q: 4. Can I record a stereo signal (Rde Stereo VMP with 3.5 mm jack) along with a mono shotgun (Rde VMP with 3.5mm-XLR adapter)? My whole interest in the DR-70D is to be able to do this. I know this unit has the right jacks, but I want to make sure there aren't any recording mode or software limitations that won't allow this.

A: Yes will work fine.

Q: 5. Is it possible to pan the 4 channels L-R like a 4-2 mixer? I often record high-school plays/musicals with X-Y stereo array (hard L-R), a shotgun (equal (L-R) and an omni pzm up-stage (equal L-R). It would be nice to mix it up-front like that, record into the A-cam and be done.

A: You can set the left-right position of each recording channel with the PAN item on the BASIC screen.

Q: 6. Is the round, padded mounting platform "attached" to the screw, so one can loosen the ball, then use the platform as a "handle" to tighten the screw to the device? Or, must one tighten the ball and rotate the device or entire head to tighten?

A: The platform can be unscrewed from the stem, rotating the head to screw into the camera is the best solution.

Q: 7. Will this work with the Sony ax53 camcorder?

A: The Sony VMC-MM1 Multi Terminal Cable will not work with the Sony FDR-AX53 4K Ultra HD Handycam Camcorder. You can find the compatible cables here: https://bhpho.to/3q8Y6Dw.

Q: 8. When recording nature, bird calls, ocean sounds etc should the low cut filter be used? If so what would the best setting be?

A: Depending on what you are recording, the settings needed can vary in different environments and when using different microphones so it's best to monitor the audio through headphones while recording and always do some testing to see what settings work best each time. The low cut filter can help to reduce noise when recording nature sounds, but it's always beneficial to experiment first and record a few samples to find out what works best with your recording setup in a particular environment. There is a lot of helpful information available on the internet that you can find by searching "How to record nature sounds" or be more specific and search "How to record bird calls" or "How to record ocean sounds."

Q: 9. what thread is on the bottom?

A: The threading on the bottom of this head is 3/8 16". This head will also come with a reducer bushing to be placed on 1/4 20".

Q: 10. Is the SanDisk 128GB Class 10 ExtremePRO SDXC Memory Card, U3, 95MB/s Read Speed a good option for the Tascam DR-70D? What is the optimum read speed in a SD card for this device? What is the SD card perfect match for the 70-D?

A: Speed Class indicate minimum writing performance. This is important mainly for camcorders, video recorders and other devices with video recording capabilities. Even a Class 4 card is sufficient for handling audio recording tasks. Tascam has officially tested Class 6 cards which function properly with this recorder.

The Tascam DR-70D and the K-Tek KSTG70 Stingray bag are the perfect pair! The DR-70D is an awesome little recorder. You've got just the right amount of features and control to get great audio. Multiple gain settings, low cuts, and much more. I highly recommend.

I absolutely love this recorder! It is easy to use, and records great audio on the microphones that are built in, or that you attach to it. It was well worth every penny.

I am an international filmmaker and cinematographer, and my contracts take me all over the globe. But with all of the travel and use that this recorder gets it has never let me down. I use it with my wireless, lapel, and shotgun microphones and it delivers great quality audio. While it shouldn't be compared against other high end ($1000+) recorders, it does a fantastic job within its competitive field. My favorite feature of the dr-70d is that is has real nobs sticking out the front. I never have to worry about stepping or other problems while adjusting the audio. And having the ability to record to two tracks has saved my bacon more than once. All in all this is a fantastic recorder to pair with any DSLR or mirror-less camera setup. If you are looking to pair this with a BMCC, Sony Fs7, or similar than I would consider looking at the Tascam DR-701D 6-Track Field Recorder. The only differences are the 701 allows two more channels of recording, enables time code sync, and has a more durable housing. Other than that they are basically the same. If those things matter to you than get the 701. If not they 70d is a great buy and will deliver when you need it to.

The sound quality on this is great, although you do have to google how to take away a slight hissing noise that persists until you set it up correctly. One that's done, it's fantastic! I like it a lot, and looks very professional, esp since I'm no longer using my provideocam to shoot, which always has a pro look when you enter a room.

I use the DR-70D on my 5D MarkIII and it rocks! Easy controls, up to four mics, plus the two built-in. Very user friendly device, great for DSLR filming.
