The gray Sanken COS-11D Omni Lavalier Microphone with Normal Sensitivity and TA5F Connector for Audio-Technica Transmitters is a subminiature lav microphone designed to deliver clear, full-bodied sound and reliable performance, making it a popular choice among industry professionals in broadcast, TV, theater, film, videography, and more.

Engineered to meet the standards of modern digital wireless microphone systems, the COS-11D is RF shielded to eliminate interference issues and ensure a pristine audio signal. The microphone capsule features a rectangular design that sits vertically, increasing the surface area and allowing this tiny mic to offer a rich, full sound that outperforms many larger models.

The mic's 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response rolls-off extreme low end and provides accurate, transparent audio reproduction with a small presence boost in the 6 kHz area for crisp, intelligible speech. With a forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern that picks up sound in a 360° pattern, levels stay consistent, even when the subject turns away from the mic.

A water-resistant mesh screen protects against humidity, perspiration, makeup, bad weather, and other potential on-location issues, while the durable cable is also moisture-resistant and built to stay soft and pliable, even after extended use. This version of the COS-11D terminates in a TA5F connector and is wired for use with Audio-Technica transmitters. Accessories are sold separately and are not included with this configuration of the microphone.

We use this mic in a shock mount at the end of a long boom pole, as well as on a short shotgun handle. Any way you use this microphone, the quality is incredible. Truly a versatile mic. The unidirectionality (is that a word?) of this mic gives you great audio from the source being pointed at, while drastically cutting out unwanted background noise. We've used this mic in a noisy hotel/casino, out on a busy street with sirens, trucks & helicopters going, and we've been truly pleased with the audio we ended up with.

This is my 2nd purchase of AT897. I've used Senheiser 416, 816, ME66, and AT839. Obviously, it cannot beat 416 and 816. But it comes with the prices. However, as a low-budget project producer, the quality of the sound is acceptable for the most of my customers. If you compare with 416 back toi back, you can clearly hear the difference. AT897 is less clear in both high and low. But it's acceptable quality for most people. If you're working on a low-budget project, Audio Technica Shotgun mic is the alternative to 416 and ME66.

We use it primarily on canon xf100 video cam to record toasts or other speeches where lavalier mic is not an option and this mic delivers.

I use this mic at home and on side projects. For the price point, i have yet to find a better alternative, and I have tried a few. Durable and the sound quality is great.

This mic works great. Very light. Strong body. Comes with nice carring case. The sound quality is great and it keeps background noise to an absolute minimum.

I'm using the AT897 in two scenarios. First, on-camera on my Panasonic AG-HMC150 for wedding film making. Second, on mic-stands for theatrical performances. In both scenarios, this mic does an excellent job in capturing directional audio. The frequency response is nice and even, though there is a low-cut switch for high-bass environments. And the fact that this mic is both phantom- and battery-powered is a huge plus. There is some handling noise, but I've seen that in almost every shotgun mic in this price range. As long as you don't move the mic around too much (or have a nice shockmount), you'll be fine. Build quality is excellent... as you would expect from Audio Technica.

I bought the AT-897 to use with my Panasonic HMC-150 camera and also on a boom. The sound quality is excellent for a reasonably priced mic. It's compact and lightweight and can be powered by either an external phantom power source or a single internal AA battery. Likewise, build quality is also excellent and I was pleased to see Made in Japan on the label. The included foam windscreen does a fairly good job in non-windy conditions, but I recommend a proper windscreen and suspension like the Rycote S-330. And, as is typical with Audio-Technica, a nice case is included.
