The white Sanken COS-11D Omni Lavalier Microphone with Normal Sensitivity and TA5F Connector for Audio-Technica Transmitters is a subminiature lav microphone designed to deliver clear, full-bodied sound and reliable performance, making it a popular choice among industry professionals in broadcast, TV, theater, film, videography, and more.

Engineered to meet the standards of modern digital wireless microphone systems, the COS-11D is RF shielded to eliminate interference issues and ensure a pristine audio signal. The microphone capsule features a rectangular design that sits vertically, increasing the surface area and allowing this tiny mic to offer a rich, full sound that outperforms many larger models.

The mic's 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response rolls-off extreme low end and provides accurate, transparent audio reproduction with a small presence boost in the 6 kHz area for crisp, intelligible speech. With a forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern that picks up sound in a 360° pattern, levels stay consistent, even when the subject turns away from the mic.

A water-resistant mesh screen protects against humidity, perspiration, makeup, bad weather, and other potential on-location issues, while the durable cable is also moisture-resistant and built to stay soft and pliable, even after extended use. This version of the COS-11D terminates in a TA5F connector and is wired for use with Audio-Technica transmitters. Accessories are sold separately and are not included with this configuration of the microphone.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does this use passive noise cancelling tech or active?

A: Not that I am aware of.The audio quality is nice and the ear pads do keep out most external sounds. However, I only wear them for up to 2 hours a day. They are really not that comfortable for me. But I have read other people really like the headset. It is worth the money.Cheers.

Q: 2. What's better for dialogue monitoring, this Audio-Technica or the Sony MDR-7506 ?

A: ATH-M50x is used by a lot of pro sound people. This is a vote of confidence in the overall design. Both sound quality and durability.

Q: 3. better than at875?

A: The AT897 is slightly more directional due to the length of the tube, as well as the option to self power via AA battery. These would be the major differences.

Q: 4. I am looking for a headphones that have exceptional sound quality and dynamic range, with some noise isolation/cancellation in an airplane. Sound quality supersedes noise isolation/cancellation. Will this model a good choice? Any other recommendation?

A: The best headphones I ever use.......

Q: 5. I’m shooting a film on an iphone. Is there a way to connect this mic with the phone?

A: The Saramonic LC-XLR Female XLR to Lightning Microphone Adapter Cable for iOS Devices (B&H # SALCXLR) can be used to connect the AT897 to your iPhone You will need to use a battery to power the mic since the iPhone can not supply phantom power. The other options for cables are the Saramonic SR-XLR35 XLR Female to 3.5mm TRRS Microphone Cable for DSLR Cameras and Smartphones (B&H # SASRXLR35) combined with the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter (B&H # APLAADAP). The MXL Female XLR to 3.5mm Male TRRS and 3.5mm Female TRS Multimedia Adapter Cable for Select Dynamic Microphones (B&H # MXMMCABLE) provides a 3.5mm TRS headphone tap which allows you to monitor the sound while recording. This cable can also be combined with the Apple Lightning adapter for use with an iPhone.

Q: 6. Does it come with a windscreen?

A: Yes, it comes with a foam windscreen that is effective in breezes up to about 7 mph.

Q: 7. I'm looking to shoot two or three people in one shot, with the boom overhead on a stand. Mostly indoors. Would this mic capture everyone's dialogue if there is no boom operator to move to the speaker?

A: A shotgun mic should be used to pick up dialog from one person, or professional sounding audio. If you use it to pick up two people, the sound will become thin. I would suggest using a boom person, or setting up two mics in a stereo configuration.

Q: 8. Why did I receive the unopened box? without cellophane?

A: Audio-Technica does not wrap the box for the ATH-M50x headphones with cellophane. Inside the box, the headphones and included accessories are packed in plastic. This is how the headphones are shipped from the Audio-Technica factory. You can view "unboxing" videos on YouTube posted by people from around the world and you will see that the boxes for ATH-M50x headphones are not sealed and the contents do come packed in plastic. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions or concerns.

Q: 9. Can I use line level signal on the AT897?

A: It only has an XLR out, so it will be a mic level output. It does have a spot where you can put a battery in, if you do not have phantom power in your recorder though.

Q: 10. Do you ship to Canada free. I just watched a comparison video and they recommended you and said you ship to Canada free. I was going to order and your site says no shipping to Canada?

A: While we do ship many, (but not all,) products to Canada, for free, due to manufacturer restrictions, we cannot ship these headphones to Canada.

I'm a prosumer wedding videographer. This mic gives better sound than probably any on-board camera microphone. You'll pick up a little more bass at times. This microphone is not sick (in a good way), but it is solid and does what I need it to do. If you're needing something fancy, then add another zero to your budget.

AT897 - a workhorse designed for any production in studio and in the field. I outfitted with 3, knowing this mic provides clean sound in very noisy environments such as a culinary kitchen and without being obstrusive.

I'm a videographer for a PR firm in Atlanta, and we produce a lot of corporate videos and interviews. This mic has been a goliath step forward from the wired lavs and wireless lavs we used to employ during our video sessions. The wired mics produced a very mute and flat tone, and the wireless lavs (which were top of the line Sennheiser sets) produced God-awful hiss and feedback from time to time. When you want to produce professional quality videos, the last thing you want is ugly hiss or poor quality audio to go with your good quality video footage. Enter the Audio Technica AT897 shotgun mic. This changes the way we shoot videos. We can shoot multiple subjects and not have to worry about wireless lav channel interference, hiss, feedback, and we don't have to yell 'CUT' when we suddenly hear interference. We can roll right through the whole interview and capture clean, crisp, consistent, and noiseless audio throughout the entire session. For the price tag on this mic, this is practically a steal. I've used $1K Rode shotgun mics and high end Sennheiser shotgun mics as well, and the AT897 stands up to the competition for sure! Love it. I'd get another one for sure!!

Just got this mic, plugged it into my camera and off I went. Quality is great, when I record someone talking 10 feet away, it records just as loud as when I talk while holding the camera right in my hands. Nice concentrated crisp sound. I'm making amateur short videos to build my portfolio, and this will do nicely.

I don't have much experience with mics, but this one has been great so far. Very rich audio.

The AT897 shotgun mic, in my experience, works best when placed two to three feet away from the subject. The AT897 does an excellent job of blocking rear and side audio, yet it allows just enough for room ambience. I was very pleased with this mic when I tested it in various studio situations.

This mic provides a great value for low-budgeters. It won't give you the quality of sound you'd get from a $2,000 microphone, but this mic is still very well made. Great quality of hardware and great sound for its price. Runs on a single AA battery, fits perfectly in my homemade boom pole. And it looks pretty in its pretty carrying case.

After using an AT-875R for a few weeks and finding it very noisy and tinny, I switched to the AT897. What a difference! Good, balanced response, a comfortable length, and excellent directionality make this mic a joy to use, and from the first shoot our sound was improved tremendously. I use the mic mostly on a boom, but it produces fine sound when used on-camera as well. Use on a wireless boom is a snap thanks to the mic's ability to operate from a single AA battery -- no need for phantom power!
