Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does unit measure all reflected ambient light? Is there a recommended way to measure only the light source (black box or tent)?

A: The Sekonic C-7000 Spectrometer Color Meter Bundle Kit can read most type of light and can measure it in , CIE1931/CIE1964 CIE1976/CIELUV CRI (Color Rendering Index) Correlated Color Temperature (TCP) Deviation (Δ uv) Dominant Wavelength (λd) Footcandle Horizontal Footcandle (HFc) Lux Lux Sec (HLx) Peak Wavelength (λp) Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) Purity (Pe)

Q: 2. What's the diference between this and the C-800?

A: The Sekonic C-7000 Spectrometer Color Meter BH #SEC7000 is designed for industrial applications and the C-800 is designed for photo and video based work.

Q: 3. Can the C-7000 automatically take multiple data points (30 points every 1 minute)?

A: The Sekonic C-7000 Spectrometer Color Meter Bundle Kit BH #SEC7000K does not have the ability to do 30 readings per minute.

Q: 4. Can this be used for color analysis of roasted coffee beans ?

A: No, the following unit is a spectro but will only capture measurements of all forms of continuous light. Please review the following item if you are trying to capture the color code of a coffee bean. Datacolor ColorReader Color Matching Tool https://bhpho.to/3BLhrdS

Q: 5. Is this meter also a light meter measuring incident and spot?

A: The main function of this meter is to measure color, but it can also provide readings in foot candles.

Q: 6. Can this unit measure PAR of grow lights. I see it measures PPFD. Is this PPFD the same as PAR? I'm new at grow lights. It looks to be the same. Ie mol m2 s-1 or. umol m2 s-1

A: No, the unit will only allow the following reading CIE1931/CIE1964 CIE1976/CIELUV CRI (Color Rendering Index) Correlated Color Temperature (TCP) Deviation (Δ uv) Dominant Wavelength (λd) Footcandle Horizontal Footcandle (HFc) Lux Lux Sec (HLx) Peak Wavelength (λp) Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) Purity (Pe)

Q: 7. What are the main differences between this one and the C-700-U? Also does C-800 give you F-stop values like a lightmeter? Or should I get a different light meter for that purpose?

A: This is a color meter. While it can measure illumination levels in lux and footcandles, it does not measure in f/stops, shutter, ISO etc, etc. You do need a light meter for that. The main difference from the 700 is that the 800 can measure more types of light. In particular, it is the only affordable, movie technician meter that can measure the new color standard, Spectral Similarity Index (SSI) which is more reliable than CRI.

Q: 8. Can this unit be calibrated or certified for industries that require measurement with calibrated/certified instruments?

A: The Sekonic C-7000 Color Meter has all safety and accuracy certifications, but no specialized industrial certifications.

Q: 9. Can this also be used to measure light levels (F stops)? Ambient, spot, or incident?

A: This meter can be used to measure incident light, measured as lux. There are no aperture or shutter speed or ISO numbers on this meter. These would need to be derived from the lux measurement and the ISO speed rating, to determine f/stops and shutter speeds. As a reference point for your calculations, Exposure Value (EV) 0 is equivalent to 1 second at f/1.0. At ISO 32 film speed, EV0 is the correct exposure for 10 lux incident light level. For ISO 500, at 110,000 lux, the correct exposure would be EV17. Remember that EV represents a collection of equivalent settings, so EV17 could be 1/1000 sec at f/11 or 1/500 sec at f/16 or 1/250 at f/22 or 1/125 at f/32 or 1/60 at f/44, and so on. For the same ISO 500 speed, 55,000 lux would require one unit lower EV than at 110,000 lux, thus 55,000 lux would require EV16 for ISO 500. With 110,000 lux and ISO 125, the correct exposure would be EV15. One of the possible shutter & aperture combinations for EV15 would be 1/250 at f/11. These examples should enable you to create exposure tables for yourself, relative to the lux readings you get from this meter. It does beautifully at measuring the spectrum of light sources and determining color rendering index and color temperature.

Q: 10. Can this unit be calibrated and/or certified for industries that require measurement with calibrated/certified instruments?

A: Calibration and possible certification are done by the USA distributor of Sekonic. https://bit.ly/3BmQwoK .

Got mine from B&H and had it brought over to me in Central African Republic by a friend two weeks ago. While testing it for the very first time near my fence I somehow disturbed a hidden nest of wasps whose residents immediately went into a furious offensive. In my flight to safety, I dropped the L-758 one metre down onto the concrete drive way and my heart sunk. I was amazed, when I picked it up later, to find that it still worked perfectly! So far my few tests using it and the colorchecker passport indicate that it's one of the best investments I have ever made in photography. My exposures and colors are now dead accurate and I look forward to finding time to calibrate my cameras with it.

I love this thing. Coming from the 478, having an reflectance meter is awesome. This thing will do just about everything. The ONLY thing I have found that is a super-small annoyance is that the 478 displayed (fc) as well as your appropriate primary setting (aperture, shutter, iso, etc). This model display of (fc) or (fl) is a separate mode.

The meter is easy to use. It feels natural to use and the settings all come naturally. Being able to quickly set your mid-tone for a cinematographer and see the dynamic range in your scene is fantastic. Not only can you use a meter reading to set mid-tone, but you can choose it manually or from a memory. That feature alone was worth the money invested. Our cameras today can capture SO MUCH dynamic range, pushing beyond film, but a simple reference I can look at while having 3 people talk to me and not have to think... gold.

I highly recommend this meter. I think that its becoming a lost art. Basically look at it a picture and decide what you like. I'm a digital baby, thats the way I grew up in production. Now that I'm at a point where I need to know lighting BEFORE camera comes in the door... this thing I worship.
