A versatile zoom optimized for both stills and video, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM from Canon is a 28.8-216mm equivalent lens designed for APS-C-format DSLRs. Incorporating NANO USM technology, this lens is characterized by its combination of a fast, stills-optimized ring-type Ultrasonic Motor and smooth, silent video-optimized stepping motor for all-around focusing performance to benefit multimedia image-makers. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers notably quicker performance throughout the zoom range for more responsive shooting from near to far. Additionally, also aiding both photo and movie recording, an Image Stabilizer system compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens is also compatible with the optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for more natural and controllable zooming performance. Updated to suit the increasing presence of video in a photographer's workflow, this zoom is versatile in regard to both focus handling as well as with its wide-angle to telephoto reach.

In regard to the optical design, one ultra-low dispersion element is featured, along with one aspherical element, to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as limit spherical aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness.

A standard zoom designed for APS-C-format Canon DSLRs, this 18-135mm lens provides a 28.8-216mm equivalent focal length range that covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.

The optical design incorporates one UD element and one aspherical element to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

NANO USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and near-silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.

An Image Stabilizer compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working in difficult lighting conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

The optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter can be used for smoother, more natural and silent zooming control when recording video.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Should I get this one or the STM version for my Canon C100 mark ii?

A: While both lenses would be compatible for use on your camera, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens, B&H # CA18135STM, would allow you to focus smoothly and silently compared to the USM lens. The STM Stepping Motor is designed for smoother autofocus during Movie AF video recording. If you use the built-in microphone to record sound, the STM lens would have less noise when focusing that would not be picked up by the camera's microphone.

Q: 2. Will this lens work with EOS 7D camera?

A: Yes, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5 - 5.6 IS USM works with the Canon EOS 7D.

Q: 3. I already own the 18-135 STM. Is the NANO USM version a legitimate upgrade due to the reported faster AF? I shoot a mix of stills and video. Thanks in advance!

A: Yes the Nano USM autofocusing system is significantly faster than the previous STM. If you're shooting a mix of video and photo, and need to utilize autofocus in video, then the Nano USM might be worth the upgrade to you.

Q: 4. Will this lens work on 7DM2 when using the new W-E1 wi-Fi card and the PZ-W1 power zoom adapter?

A: The lens will work on the 7DII but be aware that the PZ-W1 is currently only meant to be used with the Canon 80D.

Q: 5. Is there a constant aperture version of the 18-135mm? It seems like there are only full frame constant zooms except for Sony.

A: In order to be small and affordable, everything lenses (which have focal lengths from very wide to very telephoto) have variable apertures. But take heart, constant aperture zooms are available. However they are aimed to the pro market since pros hate dealing with variable aperture as well. The closest to 18-135mm I would like to suggest is the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens B&H # CA241054LIS2. It has superb image quality and is a very usable zoom on a full frame camera. The 24mm is a little tight on an APS-C camera. I too am waiting for the day when I can get a 10-1000mm f/2.0 IS lens that is 4 , weighs 8 oz and goes for $100.00. Until then...

Q: 6. Does this lens have any hot spots when it is used on an IR converted camera?

A: No.

Q: 7. will this work with Canon 90D?

A: This lens would work great on a Canon 90D.

Q: 8. Where is the focus distance gauge? I do not see it. I use this gauge when focusing on infinity with MF

A: The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens does not have a focus distance gauge.

Q: 9. If I buy this lens and the power zoom adapter, would it work with the blackmagic 6K camera for remote switcher zoom control? If you don’t know, please don’t reply saying you don’t know.

A: That is not possible with this lens.

Q: 10. Would this lenses work for the eos 77d, and if so would STM be the way or USM ?

A: Yes, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens can fit onto the Canon EOS 77D. The USM is more geared towards video shooters who want an Ultra Silent lens mechanism while the STM is more geared towards photographers.

I use this lens with our company's Canon C100 Mark II Cinema Cameras.
The zoom is smooth, as is the focus ring. The image stabilization is phenomenal. It is windy here most of the time and often I will get a bit of movement at a full zoom even if I am attached to a tripod. This pretty much takes that out of play.
Definitely worth the money if you are looking for a more compact zoom lens.

Fairly lightweight for a lens that goes from 18 mm to 135 mm. Smooth zoom action and quiet. I will be using this lens for landscape use and for informal gathering photography such as a class reunion. Most anything else in between will be a cinch for this lens.

I got this with my 80D, and I use it almost all the time. Over several cameras, I have owned the 17-85, the 17-55/2.8, an 18-135 STM, but this lens beats them all. I compared it to the 17-55/2.8, and I think the 18-135 USM has as good or better image, plus the much longer range, makes it my go-to lens. Yes, f2.8 can be useful, but... I have traveled 2 weeks in Italy and a week in Israel, and a week in Austria and used this lens almost exclusively (about 3000 images). I still like a wider angle and a longer telephoto sometimes, but the versatility of this lens is great. I love the USM focusing so much. I wish the new RF18-150 used a USM focusing motor, and pretty much all the RF lower cost lenses. There cannot be enough savings to spoil the user experience of USM focusing. Very sharp in a just right size.

I have probably taken over 50,000 pictures with this lens now. Indoor, outside, nature, weddings, sports, kids, pets, low light, daylight you name it. This is a quality built great versatile lens for your go-to lens. Super crisp, clear, and good stabilization.

I have pictures where I can see my house reflection in the bubble my son blew. I can see reflections of the surroundings in water drops on my sons face coming out of the lake. With the correct camera settings you count individual eyelashes. Count water drops on the face of a tuber while on the moving boat. This will make your photography better. Used on Canon Rebel T7i and T8i.

Great lens. Better low light capability than I had figured. This will become my day-to-day lens.

Initially i wrongly took this lens as an average lens and as a result i purchased an additional prime lens to supplement my camera. However after making some adjustments in the sharpness levels of my camera 80D images turned out to be crisp and as good as my prime lens.. I am now happy with this lens and most of the time it is the lens i use.

I bought this lens mostly to use as a one-size-fits-all travel lens with an 800D and 90D bodies, giving me an effective 28-220 lens (compared to full-frame, accounting for the APS-C crop-factor). Focus is fast, silent and accurate. Bokeh is not bad - check out the Monarch photo attached. It is great for traveling when I only have room to pack the smaller body and one lens.

I can also use it on my EOS C100 Mk II, as it is on the short-list of lenses that support DPAF face-detection. This is also the only lens supported by the Canon PZ-E1 power zoom adapter, so I can use the BR-E1 remote to control zoom, focus and shutter.

Overall when I compare images from the 90D with this lens, versus 5D Mk IV using L-series lenses, I can hardly notice any difference. There is some vignetting, but the lens profile corrections built-in to Lightroom make this a non-issue. Very satisfied with this lens.
