A: Be careful, BOTH versions have VR. The newest version has updated optics and is lighter. It is the best of both worlds. That is why Nikon discontinued the older version.

A: There is not any conventional type filter made for these lenses due to their massive size and the cost it would incur. The lenses are super-coated with multiple protective coatings to prevent scratches and dust etc that one would commonly encounter when using this type of lens in the field. Further it is recommended to use the lens' hood for extra protection. Also in the Accessories tab on the link for this lens, we have many options for neoprene hood hats, neoprene lens covers and other protective products designed to protect the lens when used in the field.

Q: 6. Having purchased this lens do you feel like someday purchasing its brother 600mm or do you feel comfortable with it's results, weight, image quality and purchase price?

A: The difference in this lens 500mm and the 600mm version is not that much if anything in terms of optics. If you need the extra 100mm than the 600mm will be a better lens for that shot.

A: Yes it is. 18mm in this format is equivalent to 28mm in 35mm format terms. Wide angle focals are any focal less than typically 50mm in 35mm terms. The 18mm focal on this lens has a field of view 76 degrees wide which is plenty wide for scenic landscapes, group shots, interior shots, close-up full body portraits. There are definitely wider focals than this to choos from, however this is a common type to work with. This is the same lens included with most of the Nikon DX DSLR cameras.
