An update on the well-regarded HD 800, the HD 800 S by Sennheiser comprises a pair of open-back headphones designed for use in studio situations, particularly when referencing between monitors and cans. Its 56mm transducer is housed in stainless steel, while its headband and mounting utilize industrial, aerospace-grade materials to emphasize durability at a relatively light weight of 11.6 oz. Sennheiser's proprietary sound absorber technology preserves the integrity of the highest of high ends by eliminating the "masking effect," a phenomenon in which the ear struggles to hear particularly bright signals when lower-frequency material occurs simultaneously at a louder volume. In reducing this masking effect, every nuance of the frequency spectrum is represented and made audible.

The design of its earcups directs sound to the ear at a subtle angle, thereby aiding in a realistic—and realistically stereo—monitoring experience. Additionally, there are two different possibilities for audio connection: a stereo 1/4" connector, and a 4.4mm balanced cable for connecting to balanced outputs, such as a headphone amplifier.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would the HD 280 headset be considered Hi-Fi, or Audiophile quality?

A: Although I'm familiar with the term, audiophile, I am not sure what the qualifiers are for headphones to be describes as such. However, these are tuned flat. That means none of the frequencies are cut/boosted. Most high quality headphones for entertainment purposes have boosts and cuts throughout. Bass boosts are pretty common these days. Flat tuning is desirable if you are in the studio. Mixing engineers need to hear the audio like this. Imagine if you are mixing a song, and your headphones had a bass boost. The final product would only sound right on the headphones you used. It is likely that the bass frequencies would be too quiet when listening with other headphones or speakers that don't have the same level of bass boosted. Flat frequency is like the baseline or foundation. The sound is neutralized. Is this what you are looking for.? Look elsewhere if you are looking for headphones that add a bit of color to the audio.

I've always gone for inexpensive headphones and
was ok with that, until I tried on the Sennheiser HD280
& realized I deserved a great pair of headphones that
had great sound and kept out all the room noise around me.
...
Been using them mostly on my computer to edit video with,
and a couple times for recording interviews...
...
They're very comfortable, sound is great..
but have to remember to take them off occassionaly to let my ears breath...
Did you know ears can sweat ?

I was looking for a good quality set of headphones without noise cancelling and all the other bells and whistles. I saw these and they seemed to be just what I was looking for. Good bass response and crystal clear sound. Very comfortable even when wearing them for long periods of time! I would definitely recommend them!

Ive used the standard Sony studio monitoring headphones for video production purposes, and while they sound fine, they just dont last very long...ear cup material comes apart or just comes off. The Sennheiser HD 280s are buil to stand up to the riggors of location production applications while providing great isolated sound for monitoring purposes. My only compliant/wish would be for them to switch to a non-coiled headphone cable...gets stretched out if someone decides to wrap it around the earpieces or if it gets shoved into a bag.
