Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens still made in Japan?

A: Yes

Q: 2. what does it mean by (35mm equivalent) ?

A: The Fujifilm X series of camera utilizes a smaller APS-C-sized sensor, sometimes referred to as a crop-sensor. What it means is that the focal length given on an XF lens has to be multiplied by 1.5 due to the APS-C sensor, so 16 x 1.5 = 24mm if you were shooting with the larger (full-frame) sensor. Fujifilm does not currently offer a full-frame sensor in their mirrorless line of cameras/lenses. Hope that helps.

Q: 3. what on earth is an x mount lens? Never heard of it

A: X mount lenses such as the FUJIFILM XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR Lens are compatible with Fuji X cameras for example the Fuji XT50 camera or the Fuji XT5 camera.

Q: 4. going to Alaska would this be a good lens?

A: It depends on what kind of photography you're doing in Alaska. This lens is great for landscape photos but not great for photographing wildlife.

Q: 5. Does this lens have manual focus override? Or is it a fly by wire 'manual' focus?

A: That large ring you see is a focus ring. You click back toward the camera to enter manual focus mode. (A clutch system.) Also, when in manual mode the barrel displays distance and depth-of-field scales.

Q: 6. Does it come with a lens hood?

A: Yes, this lens will come with a hood.

Q: 7. Can I use this to an E-mount camera? If not, is there any adapter for this lens to fit in an E-mount camera?

A: There are some cameras that have adapters that will allow a fuji lens to fit, check out that

Q: 8. Can I use a stand filter or do I need to buy the slim version?

A: I use a standard filter and get no vignetting with the optional rectangular Fuji lens hood. I would buy a slim filter if you plan on stacking another filter on though.

Q: 9. If you already owned the 10-24 f4, do you think springing for another $1000 lens that sits in the middle of this focal range is justifiable? Asking the question another way: is the step up from the 10-24 that substantial?

A: I own and love both, the 10-24 definetly gets used more as a wide angle lens great for landscape and architecture but is very difficult to use in dark situations, the 16 1.4 is amazing, focuses fast, bokeh is beautiful, amazing at night and it's super sharp, definetly a keeper for me along with the 35 1.4, 56 1.2 & the 23 1.4. hard to compare these two lenses as I use them both in very different situations, either way both lenses are superb but I'm partial to fast prime lenses rather than zooms, I recently bought a rokinon 12mm f2.0 and gave my 10-24 to my gf, the rokinon is manual focus but At this focal length I'm shooting focused at infinity anyways, it is sharp, wide, shoots great in dark situations and is really affordable.

Q: 10. Will this hood vignette on the Fuji XF 16mm lens?

A: The hood that comes with the lens works fine. Fuji also sells a premium hood designed for the 16mm f1.4 lens which is lower profile, made of metal, accommodates a filter, also doesn't vignette, looks great and costs a lot.

This is another great prime lens from Fuji and rounds out what I consider the holy trinity of single focal length lenses for day-to-day shooting (the other two lenses being the 35mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2). Optically, this is a very good lens even wide open with pleasing bokeh. The ability to separate your subject from the background with a wide angle view makes your pictures stand out from the plethora of pedestrian pictures taken with slower primes and zooms (and, of course, smartphone photos). Mechanically, it's miles ahead of most of the similarly-priced primes from Nikon. This is not an inexpensive lens but at least you feel as though you are getting your money's worth with the higher build quality. The tradition of excessively light aperture detents common to other Fuji lenses rears its ugly head yet again. I don't know why Fuji can't fix this problem--this ought to be one of the easy complaints to rectify. The clutch manual focus system with hard infinity and close focus stops is a welcome feature too--it's a shame that Fuji doesn't use this same set-up with all of their lenses. The focus-by-wire feel still doesn't match the tactile resistance of pre-AF lenses and, sadly, I'm beginning to think that is a lost cause. Overall, this is an excellent addition to the Fuji XF lens lineup.

Purchased this lens to complete my prime kit which also the 35 f/1.4 and 56 f/1.2. I went back and forth between this and the 10-24 but in the end I went for the prime because of the 1.4 (vs. 4) and the ability for this thing to be sharp even wide open. The results? I love my 35 to death but it is near impossible to get this thing off the camera. Stop it down just a bit and it's razor sharp to infinity. Bokeh from a wide angle? No problem. Landscapes and seascapes? Perfect field of view and DOF. I've even shot some portraits with this lens. Amazing. The 10-24 might be more versatile but if you're looking for a prime wide-angle in the Fuji system this is the one to get IMHO.

This lens is not used enough. It is incredibly sharp, durable, great size, weight and cost. Most people go for the cheaper 18mm or the 14 for more wide angle view, but the shallow depth of field this lens affords is invaluable. The best wide they make for sure, just incredible.

I don't tend to shoot wide-angle frequently, but I wanted to give this lens a try. I have the 14mm and I rarely use it, preferring to shoot with the 23mm and 35mm 90% of the time. I had a blast using it and challenging myself to compose using this field of view, which I preferred to that of the 14mm. The lens is sharp from corner to corner, even wide open, and the close-focusing capabilities allow for some very creative opportunities that would not be possible with my other lenses. Autofocus is quiet and snappy in broad daylight and in the shade; I haven't used it in a darker environment. Out of focus areas look very pleasing, which is hard to achieve with most typical wide angles. That said, this lens is as big as the 56mm, which is not a small lens. I was carrying an X-T1 and the 16mm with a wrist strap and it is noticeably heavier than the 14mm or 35mm. Other than size and weight, this lens is pretty much as perfect as every other Fuji lens, with the added benefit of being weather resistant. You should also consider that 16mm is also covered by both the 10-24mm f/4 and the 16-55mm f/2.8, so assess the pros and cons of each lens based on your needs.

I got this lens to have a fast, wide angle lens that I could use inside. I use it primarily for photographing my kids and while I have & love the 23mm, I've found when inside the 35mm equivalent can be too narrow at times. Granted, it's new, but since getting the 16mm, I haven't put the 23mm on my X-T1.

This is a beautiful lens for the fujifilm x-series. I'm using it on the x-t1, with the square lens hood (lh-xf16, much more stylish than the included petal-shaped hood) and it's a great looking set-up. I also have the gariz brown leather half case which adds to the size of the camera body and helps balance it out, as this lens is on the larger side. Performance is great, the manual focusing clutch is perfect. The wide-angle is a great perspective, and the images I've taken with it stand apart. It definitely has the aesthetic appeal and solid construction we've all come to expect from fujifilm. I highly recommend this lens for other x-t1 users. You will not regret it!

I have spent the past two weeks with the long-awaited wide angle XF 16mm f/1.4 WR. I'm using it on my X-Pro1. It is a 24mm lens, when mounted on an APS-C sensor. It is built for landscaping and street photography. To feel this lens you have to forget all the technical specifications. If you are a photographer you know your settings, the aperture and the angle the lens is giving you. I don't pixel peep and don't analyze distortion aberration. I just like to see how the lens works in real life situations. Its soul is its character. Let's focus on that. This lens is solid and sturdy. Feels very robust in your hand. It is not small but still feels like a compact lens. With my Xpro1 feels well balanced in weight and size. Mounted on a XPRO1 is not as fast as mounted on a XT1 which I tried a couple of days ago where it flies. For street photography and shooting from the hip basically you'll be shooting a lot of people and urban situations where the focusing is instantaneous. You'll have sharp focus even if shooting wide open. If you focus manually the DOF guide will precisely get the results you need without attracting any attention to the camera. Images are crisp without losing the palette tonality from film photography. They come to life wonderfully straight from the camera and the black and whites are vivid and creamy. This lens is truly a gem. Have defied all my expectations. In low light doesn't hunt to get the image. It is the best walk around lens a streetphotographer would love in his camera. Is now my primary lens since will let you feel at home with its intuitive controls. Who needs a Leica M these days?

I've used a few 24mm equivalent lenses before, and this one really stands out to me. The 24mm perspective just offers a great field of view without obvious distortion. This lens is sharp, can stand a beating, and is fully weather-sealed. I've been in downpours for hours where I'm literally drying the lens with a towel and it has held up beyond my expectations. This is my go to landscape lens for the X-Series. The only complaint that I have with the lens, is the aperture ring could be a bit more firm to prevent accidentally shifting into another aperture value, but that's about it.

90% of my photos are of my very active 2 year old. The 16mm angle is great for capturing him in his environment when I'm a couple feet away inside or spotting him on the monkey bars. The f1.4 aperture helps me get the subject isolation I'm looking for and is great indoors. For outdoors, it helps to have the electronic shutter on my X-T1 set to M+E to be able to shoot while open in sunlight. And as other have said, it's incredibly sharp. The build quality is excellent with 2 notable features. I really appreciate having the weather resistance to pair with the X-T1. And the push/pull for manual focusing with distance scale makes manual focus incredibly useful. About the only downside is the size, but that's the tradeoff of the f1.4 aperture, so it's worth it. Overall, highly recommended.
