If you're looking for a compact, easy-to-use lapel mic that plugs right into a phone's TRRS jack, the Rode SmartLav+ is the microphone for you. This mic offers a broadcast-quality sound in a tiny form factor, and can record to many phones and devices that offer 3.5mm TRRS connectivity.

No controls are on hand, which streamlines the process: simply clamp the mic to your subject (or yourself), plug the mic into the phone, and start recording. The mic will work with any app that records audio, including the built-in iOS Voice Memo App—but when you pair it with the iOS Rode Reporter APP, you'll have access to a wide array of mixing, editing, and exporting tools. Perfect for electronic field production, run-and-gun news reporting, or simple mobile vlogs, the mic comes with a windshield, a durable clip, and a Kevlar-reinforced cable.

The mic is easily hidden, but it offers an omnidirectional polar pattern that ensures you'll get an even sound at any angle of address. This makes it great for run-and-gun sound pickup.

The included windshield protects against plosives. The clamp makes mounting the mic a cinch. The cable is durable, being reinforced with Kevlar, so you won't find it breaking on you in the field. When you're done, store everything in the included carrying pouch.

The mic offers no controls and operates in the analog domain. This makes operation a breeze: simply plug it in and play. There's no software to install to make it compatible with your phone-unless you want to achieve extra functionalities, such as the ones highlighted in the next feature.

The SmartLav+ is compatible with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection; however, it has been designed to pair perfectly with Rode's Rec app for Apple iOS devices. Rode Rec turns the user's iOS device into a fully featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalization presets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. My iPhone XR BlueTooth the incoming voice to my hearing aids. Will the Rode SmarLav send my voice to the caller, thus freeing me from using the XR. microphone?

A: This should work fine. If you don't already have one, you'll need a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, like this one: https://bit.ly/3cbhLpN .

Q: 2. Is this mic working with the iPhone 8 ? The input jack is not the same.

A: I have an iPhone 8plus, and I could not get any mic input to work with the Rode Rec app using the lightning to TRRS (3.5mm) adapter, but I could get it to work with the voice recorder app on the phone. I went to see if there were any updates to the app, as I purchased this mic a few years ago. Turns out the app was the problem. I uninstalled it, did a hard restart on the phone, reinstalled the app and then it worked. There are many reviews of the app being super buggy so you may have to futz with it, unfortunately. RODE does have another recording app called RODE Reporter that has received better reviews, so you may want to download that as a fallback.

Q: 3. do you recomended this mic for weddings?

A: Yes. With the Rode S3 adapter to the H1 Zoom it is perfect for run n gun, especially weddings. Note, after some use the windscreen may come off, it is attached by glue. I have contacted Rode but no response on the part number.

Q: 4. Can you record directly to a PC with this mic?

A: The smartlav+ is designed with a jack that shares both mic and headphones on the same connector. If your PC features only a single jack for both as well, the mic will work. If your PC has a jack for mic and a separate jack available for headphones you will require an adapter such as the Rode SC3 which allow the mic to be connected to a standard 3.5mm mic jack.

Q: 5. work with a 2020 iiPad, using the 1/8” to usb-c adapter?

A: Yes, this is the adapter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1442282-REG/apple_mu7e2am_a_usb_c_to_3_5_mm.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 6. Will this work with the standard video camera recording on a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge?

A: Yes but keep in mind you will have no level/gain options on the basic video apps, so you might be stuck recording a low level signal.

Q: 7. Are there any alternative clips such as those made by Auray that fit this mic? The one it comes with is very difficult to put on.

A: Here's a simple option B&H # WITC5.

Q: 8. Does this mic require phantom power if I get the TRRS TO TRS adapter to use with my camcorder

A: Hi ,As far as I know it doesn't need phantom power .

Q: 9. Does this work with rose wireless Go?

A: Not directly, you need to get a conversion cable for connection: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1048150-REG/rode_sc3_trrs_to_trs_adaptor.html this is the conversion cable.

Q: 10. If I shoot with a Canon 5D and pick up the sound using this mic how condensed will the sound be? Am I better off just having a mic and recording straight into camera?

A: By condensed do you mean compressed? What the sound will be doing using this mic and the smartphone app is less compressed than going straight into the camera. The 5d compresses the audio straight into the camera. The rode app is able to record higher quality audio than what the 5d will give you. What's nice about this mic with an attachment piece you can buy, you are able to record on the phone or into the camera. Not many mics have that flexibility

The RODE VideoMic Me-L worked as advertised - it was very easy to start working - just plugged it right into my phone - and it captures voices very well when in an appropriate room. Excellent for a quick pickup or other short pieces.

Even if you're just shooting cat videos with your iPhone, which, admittedly, I am until my wife and I are on speaking terms again, this wonderful little microphone really cuts down on ambient noise compared to recording without it. If you can afford it, you should get it but, if you have any artistic sensibilities, don't attach it with your iPhone to the selfie stick of self-affirmation. Capture your surroundings and other people talking then engage this useful iOS-enabled recording device to record voice-over later, if you must.

Sound recording improved at least 60%. Less background noise. Worth the price.

I got this to use the Merlin App on my iPhone (it identifies a bird by hearing it sing). This cuts out the road noise and birds behind me, because it is directional.
I think I will get a Lightning female to male cord to give it some reach, as I am a bit concerned that the tiny Lightning connector is at risk of damage.

I did a couple tests with my iPhone 11 Pro. On one I was driving down the highway with the windows down doing 70 and did test recordings with the front facing camera and back camera with the built in iPhone mics and with the Rode VideoMic. First off, just using the built in mics, there is a bit of a difference depending on if you shoot with the front facing camera or rear camera. Neither of them were great when I did the highway test. On one of them I could barely hear my voice. Then I used the Rode mic with the dead cat that was included and I could hear my voice no problem. It provided very usable audio. Yes, there's still some background noise cause I'm going 70 with the windows down. But I was VERY impressed at how well it rejects sound that's not straight ahead. A solid shotgut mic for your iPhone for sure.

For those who are complaining about using their cases not fitting, should not give it less than 4 stars. It's a great mic. The sound is a bit on the high clarity compared to the video mic pro (2 series). Which offers a more lower mid range sound.

The mic is compact and works perfect with Apples silicone case. I use a Beastgrip Pro and have zero problems with fit, sound or interference. It's a great budget mic and a great investment if you're looking for better sound than the built in mic itself. 5 stars here.
