Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you recommend a lens case (such as Lowepro) for this lens?

A: The Lowepro Lens Case 11 x 14cm (Black), BH #LOLC1114, is a great option for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens.

Q: 2. How does this lens compare to the Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105 mm F/2D Lens?

A: At the same apertures, it performs just very slightly better than the DC, but almost the same. If images are produced by skilled shooters, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in a blind test at the same apertures. Of course the new lens goes to f/1.4 where the depth of field effect is dramatic, which is the main selling point. The new lens has slightly more distortion but less flare and CA owing to better coatings. The new lens does not have a DC control ring to manipulate bokeh. The new lens does not have an aperture ring, unlike the DC-Nikkor, so it is practically worthless for classic Nikon SLRs. The new lens is light and plasticky feeling, unlike the older solid metal and glass crinkle-coated DC-Nikkor. The new lens has a AF-S in-lens motor, which will burn out after some years and will render it a manual focus lens when Nikon decides to stop making replacement motors, as they have already done for other top-of-the-line AF-S lenses...whereas the 105/2DC with screwdriver AF will still be working just fine a hundred years from now.

Q: 3. I have the old 105. This one is not a macro I take it...?

A: No, it is not a macro. I'm sure you could convert it to one with extension tubes, but haven't tried that.

Q: 4. Does that lens fully work (all apertures) with a SLR Nikon F6?

A: Unfortunately, as the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens uses a new electromagnetic aperture design, you would not be able to adjust the aperture of the lens when connected to the older Nikon F6 35mm Film SLR Camera. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens' aperture can only be controlled when used on the following cameras: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, J5 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Q: 5. I was wondering if this lens is weather sealed so that I can take photos in less then ideal conditions light rain or in the winter time with those big wet snow flakes coming down at a fast pace. Thank You!

A: you can buy a cover to protect it.

Q: 6. Will this lens work with a teleconverter?

A: Yes, this lens will be compatible with teleconverters.

Q: 7. I was wondering seeing that this lens hasn't got VR on it. how would it be to shoot sports or aircraft in flight at a airshow. or racecars at a race track. Or would I be better off using the 24-70mm f2.8E ED VR lens for taking these pictures. Because of the price for these 2 lens is close to one another I'm trying to decide which lens would be the better choice. Thank You!

A: Not sure if you've actually had the chance to hold this in your hands, but despite the pictures, it is a big lens. But not that big that VR is needed. It's has a large diameter but short length. That being said I'm sure you'll find it useful for many things. However, having taken pictures of air shows (Naval Academy graduations and Andrews AFB) and race cars (Indy 500, Pocono 500 etc..) There are better lenes. At both types of events I use the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | S on a tripod with a three axis head for hand held I use my Nikon V3 with the 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. The Nikon 1 system is light enough to track fast moving jets, cars, and birds. I also thinking that the 105 is too short for what you're saying you want to use if for unless your within a hundred feet or so, outside that you may want to use a 200mm minimum.

Q: 8. How does the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 ART compare to the Nikon 105mm f1.4? Im looking to purchase for portraits on a Nikon D3 & D850.

A: I am in the process of evaluating and I decided on Nikon for several reasons: 1.size and weight are much less than sigma 105. 2. 82mm filter means I can buy an inexpensive adaptor and use the 95mm ND and polarizing filters I already own. 105mm filters are expensive. 3. Two of the web reviews noted many more out of focus pictures with sigma when the subject was moving toward camera. One had woman walk toward both lenses and found big difference. 4.Although Nikon isn't quite as sharp as the sigma, it is described as more sharp than my 85mm 1.4 Nikon which should be fine.

Q: 9. Does the replace the Nikon 135mm?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens is a similar focal length to the Nikon 135mm lens; it doesn't replace it, it's just a different focal length.

Q: 10. Any comparison between Nikon 105mm F/1.4 vs Nikon 85mm f/18G -- which one is better as a portrait lens?

A: Both the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G and this AF-S 105mm f/1.4E ED are very sharp. With the 105mm, you would get the slightly longer focal length and 2/3 of a stop brighter maximum aperture. While those two factors can be helpful, this lens would have the electromagnetic diaphragm which is most compatible with the newer Nikon bodies.

I have owned at least three of this model over the years and just recently purchased a brand new one from B&H. I am so glad this lens is still available new from B&H. It is nice to own one in pristine condition. Mechanically it has all the attributes of the classic AI-S Nikkor, solid all metal construction, beautiful finish, and smooth focusing action. This particular lens is not all that heavy and the front element is deeply recessed so a hood isn't always a necessity. Used with PK-13 extension tube it gives you 1:1 magnification which is helpful for slide or negative film duplication/scanning. Optically it is tack sharp wide open and produces pleasing bokeh for tight still life work and even portraits, the slightly longer that 50mm focal length being helpful for the latter. Obviously it is a manual focus lens but for its primary purpose this is not as issue and is part of its appeal.

Nikon AI-S lenses are usually built really well, and the smooth manual focus ring is always pleasant to use. The focusing helicoid on this lens seems to have been dialled to have a much firmer response, which is perfect for the precise focusing required for macro work.
Much better than the ratchety quality of the focus rings found on modern M/A lenses.

To each their own, but I am not a professional photographer and I do not need the convenience of auto-focus. I find manually focusing to be an enjoyable part of the photographic process. The camera(s) on my phone are more than good enough when I just need a quick convenient shot of something.

As a bonus, I also do not have to contend with the off-putting high pitched whines of auto-focus motors, especially in quieter settings.
It's also one less thing to worry about when it comes to maintenance or equipment lifespan.

Get these lenses new while you still can!

I use this lens on my Nikon D7000 as a normal as well as for close-up. The clarity and the sharpness of the image is excellent. I have used this lens on Sony Nex 5N and IQ is stunning sharp!

Paired with my D750, the 55mm f2.8 produces phenomenally sharp photos. I use it largely for copying slides combined with pk-13 and es-1 slide copier, but it produces great everyday photos as well. This lens was an excellent choice— manual focus and all.

I confess to being a great fan of Nikon's Manual Focus Lenses and in terms of build-quality and its quality-feel the Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Ai-S Micro Lens is perhaps as good as it gets.

The lens is of course constructed using the best traditional materials and is beautifully finished too, and is a delight to use. Built to last a lifetime, the Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Micro lens is also very compact and lightweight and offers great versatility for a wide range of subjects - not only for close-up shots of course, but also for a great deal of general photography. And although the Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Micro comes with a relatively 'slow' f/2.8 maximum aperture, in practice, it's fine for all but the dimmest of photographic situations.

I bought my first one of these lenses several years ago as a 'used' lens and I soon discovered that it's both an incredibly sharp Normal Lens and remarkably free from any discernible distortion (particularly in contrast to most other faster f/1.4 Normal Lenses for example). I sold that used lens a while ago, and employed a Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Micro lens for dedicated close-up work, however, having just purchased a brand new Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Ai-S Micro Lens, I am of the opinion that for the vast majority of the photos taken within close-range - the Nikkor 55mm is one of the best lenses to have at hand.

I bought this lens to go with my weigh-less campaign. It works very nicely on my z7, it's very sharp, short enough to work in tighter spaces than my 105 micro, and it's so small that I can stick it anywhere in my camera bag. With focus peaking, manual focus is not really an issue ... did it for my first 40 years of photography, anyway :)

I just bought a second 55 mm Micro Nikkor after having used my first for over 30 years. This lens is small but very sturdy with very smooth focusing. Most important, it is the sharpest edge-to-edge lens I've ever used. Resolution, saturation, lack of aberration and sharpness are all tops. I have used this lens extensively for medical, macro- and scientific/technical photography in a wide variety of settings and under some pretty adverse conditions with flawless performance . I have also used this lens for copy and reproduction work in the old days where it also excelled. I eventually started using it as a general lens. Looking back at the great many images taken using both transparency and print films, the images taken with this manual focus (AiS) 55 mm Micro Nikkor are still among the best I have taken, even when compared to those taken with wide variety of the most modern autofocus, vibration reduction lenses with many more elements in multiple groups. My older lens eventually developed marked resistance to focusing because of the helicoid and lubrication, a known issue with this lens, especially the earliest ones made. But it took 30 years for this to happen. I still have my first lens and will continue to use it, but wanted a second while they are still made.
