Entering a new realm within the short telephoto lens market, the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens from Nikon is an incredibly bright portrait-length lens designed for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. The f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over focus for shallow depth of field imagery. Maintaining clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range, the optical design utilizes extra-low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, and a Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in strong lighting. Availing a range of unique possibilities for a telephoto lens, the combination of the 105mm focal length and fast maximum aperture greatly benefit portrait photographers as well as event shooters.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control. An electromagnetic diaphragm is also featured for greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Short telephoto prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used on DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.

Awesomely fast f/1.4 maximum aperture enables precise control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.

Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.

A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Fluorine coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Q: 2. I have a nikon D850. Is this a compatible lens and full frame?

A: Yes, I own D850 and 105 mm lens for a few weeks. The lens is compatible with D850 and D810 as well.

Q: 6. Even though not mentioned, can this lens be defined as a true apochromatic lens? (not the Sigma definition, but the Zeiss, Cosina or Switar definition??

A: No, Nikon does not list it as a true apochromatic lens.

Q: 7. How this lens compare to the 85 1.8 ?. Difficult to compare between f/1.4 and F/1.8, any direct experience ?

A: Before getting into quality differences between the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens, a very significant different is the focal length. The perspective from a 105mm lens is different than that from a 85mm lens. This is very much dependent on personal preference and specific application. Aside from this, there are a few benefits to the 105mm. A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting. Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates, though double check that your camera is compatible with lenses that have this. The 105mm has a better build quality overall. The f1.4 aperture with the longer focal length will provide a shallower depth of field than is possible on the 85mm lens. Overall the 105mm f/1.4E is optically better than the 85mm f/1.8G lens.

Q: 8. Hi. I would like to know about best 3 lens for night shot with nikon 7500?

A: In terms of which 3 lenses are best for shooting at night, that would depend on the subject matter. Please e-mail your inquiry to us to askbh@bandh.com so we can better assist.

Q: 9. How this lans compare to the 85 1.4 ? Thanks

A: Both are very good lenses, it is more a matter of personal preference. Sharp, bright, fast, what's not to like about either one? Other than the focal length difference, not much to differentiate the two. If you have the 85, don't get the 105. If you are getting a new lens in this class, get the 105. One could be happy with either one.

Q: 10. What is the warranty on this used/refurbished lens?

A: This is a refurbished product that comes with a Nikon Limited 90-Day Warranty.

Without question, the best 105 lens Nikon has produced since the 105 f1.8 Manual Focus version. The Bokeh is buttery smooth, and the in-focus details are tack sharp. Having said that, be advised that this is a large and heavy lens, but easily managed and quick to respond. The bulk and weight is absolutely worth the performance return. It's pricey, but well worth the investment if you want to invest in the best portraits possible.

This lens feels great in your hands and has replaced my 85 1.4D as my go to portrait lens. The focus is fast and accurate. Very pleased with this investment.

I bought this lens for portraiture after seeing so many images online that revealed it's capabilities in that area. After receiving and using this lens for a month in all kinds of situations on my D800 I am in awe. It produces stunning images wide open or stopped down. Critically sharp within the DOF and an extremely pleasant transition to OOF areas. It focuses more like a good zoom than a prime, very quick and accurate. It handles backlit subjects very well, is flare resistant and I have seen no evidence of CA in high contrast edges so far. Edge to edge seems distortion free. I have some pretty good lenses but this one is in a class of it's own. Well worth the money.

Just can't get enough of it. Since I received it its on my D5 & it look sexy as hell. Images comes out of it are pretty sharp and aesthetically pleasing, somewhat like Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G lens. Can't really describe it but its really feel good kind of images. The bokeh is creamy soft and delicious. I have pretty much all modern Nikon lenses & I would rate this even better than my Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G. Please don't ask me why, because my answer will be, it's different lens in many way, like I said before, it's kind of hard to explain, you really need to try it for yourself at least for a weekend. See, I do lots of outdoor session & those are daytime but I do many wedding and most of weddings are in the evening, when I used this fat boy past weekend to document the wedding I was blown away how my images were coming out, booked was unbelievable, lights on the background, glittery decorations, colorful venue ...it was all unbelievable 3D type of look (see my images, the bokeh and the downtown buildings in the background). I am in L.O.V.E. I also like the distance better than 85mm f/1.4, to get a good portrait shot with 85, I always felt like I was in client business, this 105mm feels just perfect for me. Of coarse it's not cheap lens...and that's the downside to it. It's also little heavier than 85 1.4 but I don't mind the weight, like I said it look sexy on my D5

Amazing portrait lens. Super sharp across the frame even at f1.4. Color rendition is excellent and super creamy bokeh. Big but modest weight for the size due to high use of plastics. Build quality is pro-sumer, not pro, but fine although surprising at this price point. Weather sealed. Made in China. Super cheap case - really only a dust cover - disappointing at this price. Overall a must have portrait lens.

Was excited to see this one announced, held back but bit the bullet an grabbed this one. pretty amazing image rendering, just not sure which lenses I will now sell off ( I already have the 85mm 1.4 Nikkor, and both the 100mm and 135mm f2.0 Zeiss ) haha. looking forward to getting out and about with this one in early morning and dusk for travel photography, shall be fun! Biggest shame? Its Made In China.... I was surprised frankly but I guess this would of been over USD $3000 if made in Japan. Well Zeiss can, why not Nikon?? Still a 4.8/5 lens for me.

This lens is a photographer's ultimate dream come true. It is incredibly tack sharp. The dreamy bokeh is unparalleled by any other lens in today's market. From up close and personal to far away, it is still more beautiful than one could imagine as being feasible. Up to now, I've always shot my artistic landscape and portrait images with zoom lenses but this prime lens is forcing me to change my ways. It will maintain a prrmanent place in my bag and I can foresee it being my go to lens for my infrared black and white imagery, as well, because it does not have the dreaded hot spot, even at f/11 and barely perceivable at f/18. It is an expensive lens but definitely worth every penny. You will never suffer from buyer's remorse with this new addition to you lens arsenal.

Don't buy it so you can't take as good of photos as I am taking at this very moment! Best lens I've ever shot with! Nikons finest!

Been experimenting with the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens I purchased a few weeks ago. An amazing and fairly essential addition to your lens arsenal. I called and did my order via cell, the B&H service representative who took my order was personable and patient; while the speed at which the lens arrived via UPS was about 5 days quicker than quoted.
