The 4030L from Coles is a studio ribbon, figure 8 polar pattern microphone manufactured using CNC machinery and magnet technology as used in the Coles 4040 and 4050 microphones. The frequency response of the 4030L is exceptionally flat, from 50 to 20,000 Hz, and throughout this range the shape of the bi-directional (figure of eight) polar response is maintained substantially constant both in the horizontal and vertical planes.

The 4030L is a versatile microphone designed for critical recording applications. Its frequency response characteristics and ability to capture detail make it useful for many instruments. The 4030L can be used alone or as a pair with an optional stereo mount, which can be rotated through 360 degrees; for the popular "Blumlein" (crossed figure-of-eight) stereo configuration, or other configurations of choice. The red dot indicates the front of the mic for phasing purposes.

The 4030L microphone is delivered in a foam-lined rigid carrying case with an adjustable universal stand mount.

A: I don't know of any foam screen that would fit this sE Electronics Voodoo VR2 Active Ribbon Microphone, but I would definitely not recommend using this outdoors. When recording vocals with a ribbon mic, a pop-filter is strongly recommended, as a strong plosive sound without protection can actually damage the microphone element. I would recommend using something like this: https://bhpho.to/3vUTYd6 .

Does a really good job at capturing the guitar tones you hear from the amp. With a little EQ you can make it sound like the room if thats what you are after.

so far I used the fat head for acoustic guitar, electric guitar cab and vocals. It provides a warm and natural sound I could not achieve with my condensers or my sm57. the highs are open but not harsh, I wouldn't count on it to pierce through a dense mix on vocals, but for folk rock kind of stuff it's beautiful. On acoustic I used it as the mid mic in a mid\side configuration with a 414 as side, I had to pull out a little around 200hz, loved the warmth and openness it provided. can't wait to give it a try on some brass. It's surprisingly heavy and feels serious.

Works for what I wanted, a mic to tame soprano saxophone recordings. Sounds great. The figure of 8 pick up pattern presents a challenges for my application, but it still works.

Since obtaining this microphone, I have used it to mic up two different guitar amplifiers to good effect. Overall, the sound is warm and the bass response becomes more pronounced the closer it is placed to the grille cloth. Positioning the mic around six inches away produces a more balanced and useable sound IMHO. I have yet to try this mic with a Cloudlifter, which I believe should, when used in conjunction with the Fat Head II, yield a better, hotter signal.
