With a built-in YN-622N radio receiver, the YN685 Wireless TTL Speedlite from Yongnuo offers complete radio slave functionality with both the YN-622N and RF-603/YN-560 radio systems for maximum compatibility with your existing gear. The flash is also compatible with Nikon's i-TTL flash system when mounted to the camera and has a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. Benefiting this power is a wide zoom range which will cover 20-200mm in full frame, and a diffuser for wide angle lenses. It also features full bounce with tilt up to 90° and rotation of 180° to the left or right.

Operation is simplified with a clear LCD screen on the back, a dial, and a selection of buttons. The head also offers a pull-out bounce panel for reflecting some light forward when using the tilt functionality. Full sync options are available as well, with high-speed, 1st & 2nd curtain sync. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the iTTL work with the new Nikon D500 and D850 as they have changed from the old system?

A: Yes. It is compatible.

Q: 2. Wondering if YN685 would respond also to my YN602 triggers?

A: Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm the above due to the age of the triggers/receivers. Yongnuo only states the YN685 to be compatible with the YN-622C, YN-622C-TX, YN560IV Flash, YN560-TX, RF-605, RF-603 II and original RF-603. The older YN602 triggers are not listed.

Q: 3. Can I use a SB-700 in commander mode and use a group of these in slave if the SB-700 is mounted on top of my body and getting iTTL from the camera? Basically I'm trying to find a way to incorporate using the SB-700 and not have to add more SB units but instead use these instead due to similar performance and lower price points.

A: Unfortunately, this flash does not offer an optical slave option in TTL. What you could do is use Yongnuo YN-622N i-TTL Wireless Flash Transceiver & TX Controller Kit for Nikon B&H # YO622NKIT instead. By placing the YN 622 TX on your Nikon DSLR and the YN 622N II Transceiver on your SB-700, you can then have the YN 685 flash fire wirelessly in TTL using its built in receiver. Please see the image below for reference.

Q: 4. Do you need a YN-622N-TX E-TTL Wireless Controller for each additional YN685 flash you use to maintain TTL output on all flashes? Thank you for your time!

A: No, only one controller is required. There are three channels that can be controlled separately, and any number of Y685's can be set to each channel.

Q: 5. Can't get new n622-tx to talk to yn685. Have tried every setting combination I can find to no avail. Would appreciate any help. Have had no luck trying to contact Yongnuo? Thanks.

A: I have SOME familiarity with these items. Maybe this will help:-The flash has several MODES; make sure you click to 622 Mode.-The flash can be labeled to be in a GROUP (A, B, C, D, E, and maybe F); make sure that whatever group your flash is labeled (make it A, for simplicity) is being controlled by some setting on the trigger (the 622). (On the trigger, Group A can have one of several Modes OFF, ETTL, M,.. something like that; make sure Group A is not OFF.-Both the trigger and the flash have to be set to the same CHANNEL.I'd love to know if one of these points helped, and, if not, I'll dig mine out to see if we can pinpoint the problem.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with Canon T3? And can this work as an off camera flash?

A: Yes it works with canon T3, it can work as an off camera flash but you have to use a radio trigger, the yongnuo yn622c works great and support HSS, you only need one tranceiver at the camera since the flash unit came with an internal receiver. This flash dont support optical slave.

Q: 7. Thinking of getting a RoveLight 600 Ws Monolight with (Bowens Mount) & I have a YN622N-tx & 1 YN622N-rx. Anything else I need to trigger the monolight? Also, can I control the power output from the YN622N-tx controller? If not, how should I set it up? Thanks. If I get the monolight, I would have it plus 1 Nikon SB700 which I'm hoping would be enough to light a reception room instead of having to carry around more than two flashes.

A: Unfortunately, B&H is not an authorized RoveLight dealer and we do not carry RoveLight or accessories. To connect the Yongnuo i-TTL Transceiver YN622N II to your monolight, you may purchase the Impact Sync Cord Male Mini (3.5mm) to Male PC (1'), B&H # IMMMPCM1. You would not be able to adjust the output power of a monolight when using the Yongnuo i-TTL Transceiver YN622N II for Nikon. The Yongnuo transceiver is designed to allow you to adjust the output power of hot shoe speedlight TTL flash which connects to the hot shoe on the top of the transceiver. When connecting the unit to a studio strobe using a PC sync cable, you would not maintain the ability to control the unit's output power. I would have to recommend contacting the manufacturer of the monolight you wish to purchase to inquire if they have a radio remote trigger that would allow you to control the output power of the unit wirelessly.

Q: 8. I know this flash can use an external battery pack, but the description does not say what to use, nor is there any options in the accessories for an external battery pack for this flash.. My question obviously is what battery pack will work with this flash?, and a link to the battery pack would be helpful - Thanks

A: The flash is based on canon. Battery pack for the canon 600ex rat should work

Q: 9. I have a Nikon sb700 Will this flash Yn658 be more like a sb910 up to 200mm

A: The YN658 will not be as powerful as the SB910.

Q: 10. What external battery packs is compatible with this unit? Will it work with any of the Godox battery packs?

A: At this time we do not sell Godox products. However, we do have battery packs from Bolt that will work with this flash. You can look at B&H Numbers BOPP310 and BOPP400DR.

I use this with the Nikon D500 along with the Nikon SB-700. You can't beat it for the money. My one wish is there was better choices for diffusers.

I purchased the YN685 as my first Speedlight and I am not disappointed in it. Construction is sturdy, the head swivels and clicks into place well. It has not had any unwanted movement after I adjust the angle. The slide lock it has as oppose to the screw lock has not been an issue for me, it does allow for quick mounting and dismounting while not being loose. Controls where easy to figure out and navigate. The only thing I am not a big fan of is the AF-assist light its the groups of + that seem very bright at times. Other then that I love this speedlight and would buy another when my need arises.

I picked up this flash on a whim and was hesitating considering it wasn't a Nikon but once I started playing with it, I was blown away. Perfect light and a fast reset. I've used it for indoor portraits and macros with amazing success. For all you guys still shopping, for this price you should just stop hesitating and pick one up. You'll love it
