I have a heavy monfrotto weight clamped to the bottom of the upright to keep it balanced. I have built trays that carry laptops. I use multiple clamps on the upright. Superclamps are an alternative to the spring clamp. When you get too much load on a spring clamp it can slip. In that case use a superclamp to support it or just use a superclamp.
