Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the aperture constant at all f-stops or only when set to 4.4? The 24-105 is constant only at f4 but will ramp when set any other f-stop.

A: What ever aperture you set on the CN-E 18-80mm, it should not ramp to another. If it did, one of it's most important selling points would go away. We would have to add we have never experienced a lens that ramped at any stop that was not at the wider open end of the aperture scale. In regards of the 24-105mm, we do find when set at f/4, it does darken at 105mm, suggesting that the the true full range stop is more f/4.5 than f/4. But at f/5.6 and higher f/numbers, the exposure remains the same throughout the zoom range.

Q: 2. Anyone know if it is possible to adjust the zoom speed without the accessory grip unit. Or are you stuck with one speed only? (I'm using the C100 mkii).

A: According to Canon: The lens is equipped with an electronic zoom that delivers smooth, quiet and stable zooming from high speed to low speed across the entire 1880mm zoom range. So it appears that indeed you can vary the speed directly on the lens if you wish to. However, Canon and I are sure that in time you will wish the better control that you gain with the Canon ZSG-C10 Zoom Grip for COMPACT-SERVO Lens B&H # CAZSGC10.

Q: 3. Can you control the Canon CN-E 18-80mm zoom and focus with a LANC remote via the C100?

A: Sorry, no LANC control is listed as possible with this lens on any camera. On the C300, the camera can control the lens including zoom.

Q: 4. Will this lens cover the sensor crop of 4K mode on the Canon 1Dx Mark II?

A: The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II 4K sensor crop is 1.4. The CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 is meant to cover a Super35 frame which is essentially the same as APS-C or a 1.6 crop. So while the lens will cover the 4K sensor at 80mm down to about 30mm we think with no problem, there will probably be some vignetting at 18mm.

Q: 5. what lens support will work with the accessory that comes with the lens?

A: Hi When you get the optional zoom mount it comes with a 1/4-20 attachment that screws to the lens. It is too small and fragile to support more than the lens, definitely not any camera intended to be used with the lens. I called Canon and that is all they have ! Zacuto makes a more practical mount that uses the same screws and holes. It can be used with 15mm rods.

Q: 6. Do the mounting screws and gears on the barrel allow for any other servos to be mounted, such as from a Canon ENG lens? I know there is difference between the 20-pin connector on this lens and the 12-pin on most ENG lenses, but I am considering this as an option for the Panasonic Varicam LT (Canon mount) or the Black Magic URSA Mini (PL) which offer 12-pin lens communication. Thanks,Scott

A: Being that this lens is unique, we have our doubts that any other ENG hand grip/servo unit can fit the diameter, gear distances and screw holes of this lens. We would approach this by customizing a 12 pin to 20 pin cable.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with the C300 Mark I?

A: It will work perfectly with the Canon EOS C300 or any of the Canon cinema camera's.

Q: 8. What is the cable for energy lens 12v ?

A: Power to the CN-E 18-80mm is provided through the EF mount of the camera. You will not need a power cable for this lens.

Q: 9. Will this lens cover the sensor crop (x1.7) of 4K mode on the new Canon 5DMKIV body?

A: The Canon CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 COMPACT-SERVO Cinema Zoom Lens is meant to cover the 31.4mm image diameter of a Super35 sensor. Therefore this will easily cover the 25mm image diameter of a 1.74 crop (from Full Frame) sensor. Of course, it will not cover the 5D Mark IV's 43.3mm image diameter for Full Frame.

Q: 10. Would this lens work on a Panasonic Varicam LT w/ EF mount? If so, I just found my new ENG kit. :)

A: The Panasonic Varicam LT has an active EF Mount, so you will be able to use this lens on the camera. However if the servo zoom on the lens works when used with this camera is not something we will know until the lens has been released and tested. Please keep an eye on our website for updates.
