Capture quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the Rode NTG2 shotgun microphone. With low handling noise, the ability to endure loud sound sources before distortion, and support for battery or phantom power, the NTG2 offers a versatile, cost-effective solution for recording clean dialogue and sound effects.

The NTG2's elevated sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG2 delivers consistently clear sound due in part to its gentle rise in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing selectable low-cut filter. The durable and lightweight high-grade aluminum housing is finished in hard-wearing epoxy paint to withstand the stress of location recording.

The combination of the NTG2's 11" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 18 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and operability with 48V phantom power or a single AA battery, the NTG2 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on cameras and camcorders.

The NTG2 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG2 in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.

The NTG2 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this be compatible with the Deity S-Mic2? I can see that the mic diameter is compatible however I'm worried with its length. How about the S-Mic2 S?

A: The Diety S-Mic 2 would be too long for this blimp, but the Diety S-Mic 2S would be compatible. I would recommend the Rycote Windshield Kit for Sennheiser MKH416 & Other Select Shotgun Microphones, BH #RYWMKH416 for the Diety S-Mic 2.

Q: 2. The XLR connector on the MKE 600 appears to be upside down, is this the case with all Sennheiser shotgun mics, or just the MKE 600?

A: Not sure what you mean by upside down, but the orientation of the XLR connector is irrelevant to the performance of the microphone.

Q: 3. Does any one has experience with NTG2 and AT897 as well? How do you compare these three mics? I plan to buy one of this mic to work with Tascam DR-70D for voice-over and filed recording? What will be the best choice? Thanks a lot.

A: A four-and-a-half year old question - why not? I don’t have first-hand experience with those mics but I just ordered the MKE 600. Why? It’s on sale but I preferred it over those options anyway. To me, the NTG2 is overly sharp and bright around 5-7kHz. The AT897 has a good sound and low noise but the MKE600 has a slightly more resonant-sounding 700Hz range in addition to its better balance overall. Each of these mics has a sonic signature across varied sources and environments and I found the MKE to be least annoying and, in fact, rather pleasing. I’m definitely looking forward to trying and hopefully keeping it.

Q: 4. Anyone know what shockmount that is? I just want to buy the shockmount

A: That is the Auray DUSM-1 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885660-REG/auray_dusm_1_universal_shock_mount.html

Q: 5. Does this work with the mke 600 sennheiser? And does it come with a dead cat or is it a simple sleeve over the blimp itself?

A: That will fit the MKE 600. It is a complete blimp system with a suspension, the blimp, a handle, a short XLR cable that connects to the inside, and a boom pole adapter.

Q: 6. It says it comes with a windjammer. Is this an external unit that fits over the blimp?

A: Yes. The windjammer is a 'deadcat' style sock that fits over the blimp.

Q: 7. Will this fit on the Sony PXW-Z90V camcorder?

A: It will, but you may need to use O-rings on the mic to give it a bit more girth to fit into the mic holder: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/341475-REG/Sanken_ROCS_ROCS_Rubber_O_Rings_f_CS_1.html

Q: 8. Would this fit the Rode NTG4+?

A: No, the Rycote Super-Blimp NTG5 Windshield Kit is the wrong size. You will want to use the Rycote Super-Blimp Kit for Rode NTG & Shotgun Mics - 11" Length, 0.7-0.9" Diameter (B&H # RYWKNTG) which is intended for use with Rode NTG1, NTG2, NTG3, NTG4, and NTG4+ model microphones.

Q: 9. on which focal length you start see the mic in frame?

A: It depends on where you have the mic suspended or if you have it mounted to your camera.

Q: 10. Will this fit on the Sony PXW-X70 Video Camera securely?

A: Having a quick look at that camera it should fit just fine. If it's loose you can always add foam or tape for a better fit. Cheers.

I love this mic and have gotten some award-winning sound out of it. It works like any other shotgun mic so nothing much to add. The only complaint is that when you turn it on, it has a red light that indicates it's powered up but then it goes off right away. Another complaint is I always forget to turn it off.. But this is a great mic with great sound.

I needed a mic to make my unsophisticated recording locations sound as close to a professional studio as possible and this does the trick. It cuts out all the noise that I don't need and captures the voices I do need and makes them sound interesting and it does all of this for a VERY reasonable price.
