Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I this 2 x 2TB or 1 X 4TB?

A: There is only one drive in the Rugged Mini. If you need two separate drives for a RAID or JBOD setup, look at the Rugged RAID 2x2TB drive... it's currently $399.

Q: 2. can you do incremental backups of only files that have been added or modified?

A: This is dependent on the choice of backup software used, not the hard drive.

Q: 3. Does this require wall power or is it bus powered? The photos and description are confusing.

A: The LaCie 8TB Rugged RAID Shuttle USB 3.1 Gen 2 External Hard Drive B&H # LASTHT800080 works over bus power if you use it the USB Type C to Type C cable on a laptop with a native USB Type C port. If used with the included Type C to Type A USB cable and an older computer, you will need to use the included power supply.

Q: 4. Would this drive be good for recording from the AJA Helo?

A: Yes it would be. The AJA HELO H.264 Streamer & Recorder has a USB connection that will allow you to use this drive, BH #AJHELO.

Q: 5. For archiving, would you buy one of these and use in RAID 0 (for maximum size) or an 8TB desktop-size drive (losing the benefit of portability and encryption) ?

A: If one drive fails in a RAID 0 configuration, you would lose all of your data. The desktop drive has the advantage of an external power source. You could use a program like bitlocker to encrypt the drive. If you are looking for a portable solution, you could divide the data across 2 or 3 Lacie 5TB Rugged drives.

Q: 6. does it work with macbook air?

A: As long as you have a USB 2 or USB 3 port on the computer there shouldn't be an issue. It works for my iMac.

Q: 7. What is the oldest and newest Mac OS this drive will work on?

A: It will work on at least Snow Leopard all the way to the current version (Sierra at the moment).

Q: 8. Can this be hooked up to an iPad? If so, what adapter is needed?

A: For any Ipads with Native USBC, this drive would connect directly and would work as long as it is formatted correctly. For older ipads an adapter would be needed based on the model of tablet, but the drive would work as well as long as it is formatted correctly.

Q: 9. If I am shooting in the field, can I use the Lacie to download directly from my Nikon 850 for storage?

A: Nope. Tethering process will be slow. Not recommended for D850 camera

Q: 10. is it compatible with Samsung smart TVs?

A: Yes, however you must reformat the drive to NTFS, ExFat, and Or Fat32 if you want to dump content from both Mac and PC on the drive and make it readable for the TV.

I bought this unit for traveling back & forth to a photo class because of its durability. It is easier to handle than the hard plastic type of drives I own and in case I drop it Im sure it will be ok.

This is mysecond LaCie external hard drive that I use to backup all of my RAW and finished files. My first was purchased over a year ago and worked flawlessly so this was an obvious choice for me. Setup was easy; plugged it into my Mac and it was ready to go. Runs quiet. USB powered so that another power cord is not necessary. No complaints, no regrets.

Fits in your hand. Quiet (which is important to me as I use it as an external while recording music). Light weight. Small. Doesn't get overly hot. I've had a LaCie Rugged and 8 years later it is still going strong. Only negative is the short USB cord included. No biggie...I'll just drop a few $ and buy a longer one at B&H next time I go there. Really great, dependable drive that's easy to configure and use and takeup next to NO footprint on your desk.
