Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can image stabilization be used while on a tripod without blurring the image?

A: You don't use it with any lens while on a tripod.

Q: 2. It's clear that everyone loves this lens for nature and sports. I'm wondering about its versatility. What is your experience with portraiture at or near the lower end of the zoom range? FYI, I have the Zeiss Batis 135 (and am considering a return) and must stop it down to at least 4.5 if I am at all close to the subject to obtain a usable DOF. Portraiture results? Or is this strictly useful for nature and sports?

A: While this lens is popular among nature and sports shooters, it can do very well for those shooting portraits from a greater distance from the lower end of the zoom range.

Q: 3. Has anyone purchased the additional Protection Plan?

A: I echo T.F.s response. I also purchased the plan. Whether I use it or not I come out a winner....

Q: 4. is this compatible with a7RII camera?

A: Hi! Yes. This lens is compatible with the Sony a7RII camera. -Anthony

Q: 5. Is the removable lens foot interchangeable with the lens foot for tho 2.8 70-200 GM? I ask because I own the 70-200 which I use with a RRS LENS FOOT ON MY GIMBAL HEAD. Will the same RRS lens foot fit the 100-400?

A: Ignore the Sony Expert. The Really Right Stuff footer is awesome. You really have to use a gimbal or Im using my 2-d pano plates as a poor mans gimbal (which actually work really well). But in either case you want the Arca-Swiss style (isosceles trapezoid) clamp and the RRS plate does an admirable job of accomplishing that. Even with any decent ball head you still want the RRS clamp. Sony expert - why are you saying what you are saying? Have you ever used the equipment in question?

Q: 6. Does it come with a case

A: Yes, the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens with UV Filter Kit comes with a lens case.

Q: 7. The Sony FE 100-400 lens is said to be compatible with the 1.4 and2.0 teleconverters.Does this also mean that they will autofocus with one or both of these teleconverters?

A: Hi Walter, yes. The 1.4 & 2.0 teleconverter supports AF. -Anthony

Q: 8. Is the 100-400 significantly better performance and optics than the apsc 70-350? I realize that it is FF vs Crop, but am interested in the slightly longer reach and slightly faster aperture.

A: The 100-400 is better in low light being f/5.6 vs 6.3 on the 70-350. And is optically a sharper lens as well.

Q: 9. using this lens on the a6600 body, which teleconverter would be better for wildlife and nature photography? The 1.4x or the 2x?

A: Both the 1.4x and the 2x teleconverters are fully compatible. The 1.4x would turn the lens into 140-560mm f6.3-8 while the 2x would be 200-800mm f8-11. So while the 1.4x would be better in low light and/or at lower ISO ranges, the 2x would be better for longer focal ranges which could determine whether or not you capture the shot of a skittish animal.

Q: 10. Any successful story about capturing soccer game especially at night time?

A: Yes, but it's probably a bit of a guessing game as to which lens is better on a given night. You'll be under artificial light and so really the quality of that dictates. In poor lighting, neither lens will do a great job. As you need to crank up the shutter speed to avoid blur, you may be left with higher ISO images with some graininess.

Much easier to handle and carry than the Sony 200-600. The clarity is excellent but diminishes somewhat when used with the Sony 2x teleconverter.

Excellent build quality. High quality construction. Not as heavy as I thought it would be, which is good.

Has three assignable buttons one can use in portrait/landscape orientations. Detachable foot. Slide door on hood enabling access when wanting to adjust circular polarizing filter--all very practical.

The focus ring is buttery smooth, as is the focal length adjustment ring--very good for video use.

The optical image stabilization works seamlessly on my A7RIII. At 400mm, I have been able to take sharp images hand held at 1/80th of a second shutter speed.

The lens is very very sharp at all focal lengths, which is why I said "Why Buy the 70-200 GM When You Can Have the 100-400GM?" If you need a telephoto zoom for portraits in low light, this is not your lens. But I feel very comfortable saying this lens would make an excellent portrait lens in studio and outdoors in good lighting. Don't forget 400mm at 5.6 isolates the subject and blows out the background just as well as 135mm or 200mm at f/2.8. No need to worry so much a HSS to get that effect, either.

I shoot mainly fashion and portrait and this lens ROCKS! Super fast focus, Sharp did I say sharp? It is about the same size as the 70-200 GM but gives me more reach. Also the Bokeh is nice and creamy. Very pleased with this purchase.
I would buy again.

Second Update: I’ve been shooting with this lens for four days now, and it is phenomenal!!! I have close ups of hummingbirds, photos of the moon in daylight, photos of every rock and tree on the faraway mountain! I shoot hand held, the weight is balanced and steady, and I can’t wait to keep shooting day after day (and night shots) with this phenomenal lens!!!!

Got this lens at the end of November and have really been enjoying it. Nice clear images. Little on the heavy side but still better than my Tamron lens. Most of my photos are birds and other wildlife. So glade Sony came out with a lens with good reach for my e-mount. On my smaller format a6500 it reaches out to 600mm. I’m a happy camper.
