Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can this be synced to Sony FX3's?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II does have timecode and can be synced to the camera. However, the Sony FX3 Cinema Camera does not have any timecode input or output so you will need to use a timecode device like the Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator (B&H # TETE1MK2) or the Track E Recorder with Timecode (B&H # TETRACKE).

Q: 2. I know the 1/8" stereo-in is TRS, but I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow jerry rig a mix-minus using it? (I know a mix-minus is possible over USB) Thanks!

A: Yes. According to Sound Devices, the 3.5mm stereo input can be split in the mixer and the audio can be sent to two different channels. With the proper headphone preset, you can create a mix-minus using audio from the 3.5mm input.

Q: 3. Can it record .wav files and mp3 files simultaneously?

A: no

Q: 4. What is the correct cable to connect to camera from aux port for scratch track?

A: See below; a 1/8"/ 3.5mm TRS cable is needed to connect to the Line Output connector on the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. If camera has a 1/8"/3.5mm connector: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/746639-REG/Sescom_LN2MIC_PCDM50_LN2MIC_PCDM50_Line_to_Microphone.html/specs OR https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/746651-REG/Sescom_LN2MIC_ZOOMH4N_6_LN2MIC_ZMH4N_6_Line_to.html If camera has Dual XLR connectors: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1237751-REG/hosa_technology_hmx_003y_1_8_stereo_mini_to.html OR https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/748828-REG/Sescom_SES_IPOD_XLRM03_SES_IPOD_XLRM03_3_5mm_Stereo_to.html Connectivity Analog I/O 3 x XLR 3-Pin Female Balanced Line/Mic Input 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Aux Input 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Headphone Output 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Line Output

Q: 5. If Recording directly from the mixpre to my camera (a7iii), will the 32bit sound be baked into the SD card of the camera along with the footage, or will the 16bit rate of the internal preamps of my camera take over? Assuming my volume level on the camera is turned down to 1 (minimal)

A: Your better quality 32 bit audio would be on the recorder only. Going into the mic input on your camera from the recorder would not give you the same audio quality as what you get from the recorder.

Q: 6. What accessory can I use to mount this on a mic stand or neck of a tripiod?

A: Hello Patrick. All MixPre II Series recorders have ¼-inch, 20-threaded screw mounts on their top and bottom panels for mounting to gear. Please use the attached allen wrench to pop-up the screw by pushing the straight part of the wrench up into the bottom of the MixPre-3 II.

Q: 7. Does this recorder, can record 3 xlr inputs and one stereo from the aux in 5 individual tracks?

A: It can only record 3 audio sources at once. That can be any combination of XLR and AUX-IN sources.

Q: 8. Can I use a battery with 25 W output to power mix pre via usb c?

A: Yes. The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II Multitrack Field Recorder requires at least 7.5W from a USB-C power source.

Q: 9. This looks like a 3d printed part, is it? The reason I ask is I want a nicer injection molded part for this use, if possible.

A: Unsure of the manufacturing process, but it does seem and feel as if it was 3D printed.

Q: 10. I'm youtuber I make Videos at home studio. I use rode ntg-3 with zoom h6 is it worth to upgrade from zoom h6 will it be Noticeable change in quality? I work on 23bit 48khz WAVE files in control ed enviroment so I think there want be diffrence in 24 or 32bits, but are the preamps worth to upgrade or something else?

A: The 32-bit recording does make a noticeable difference in the audio quality and as others have already mentioned, it is near impossible to have any problems with clipping on the tracks. The Sound Devices preamps are excellent and many customers do consider the MixPre series recorders to be a worthy upgrade from the Zoom H6.
