The lens's optical design incorporates three low dispersion elements to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations, while an eBAND coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and clarity. Complementing the optical design is a high-speed Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus system, which is benefitted by a dual MPU for quick and responsive performance. Vibration Compensation is also featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Spanning a versatile range of long focal lengths, this telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.

Three LD (low dispersion) elements are used in the optical design to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.

An eBAND coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

An Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 4.9' away.

Dual Micro-Processing Unit control system contributes to quick and responsive performance for both the autofocus and Vibration Compensation systems.

A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Through the use of magnesium alloy components, the lens's physical design is both lightweight and durable.

An optional removable rotating tripod collar is available, which features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Supports working with the optional Teleconverter 1.4x to further extend the effective focal length range to 140-560mm.

Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi, do you need an adapter or does it connect directly onto the canon camera? thank you

A: No adapter needed for EF and EFS mounts. I useMine on an 80D.

Q: 2. Would this lens work with the Canon 80D?

A: I have a Canon 80D and the lens works great with this camera.

Q: 3. I currently shoot with a Nikon D7200. I currently use the Nikor 55-300 kit lens for wildlife photography. Especially birds in Florida It's time to upgrade and the Tamron 100-400 seems like a good possibility. However, I'm wondering how much of a difference I'll see between the Nikor 55-300 and the Tamron 100-400? Both in terms of overall quality and long range picture taking. I'm looking for something in the 400-500 focal length range. My other alternative is the Nikor 200-500 which seems to be a very good lens but a beast to carry around. Any thoughts on whether the Tamron 100-400 is a significant step up for me or should I go with Nikor 200-500?

A: The Tamron 100-400 is good lightweight lens and will give you 35% more magnification. Ideally the Nikon 200-500 or Tamron 150-600 would be ideal for photographing birds. You need the magnification range for wildlife.

Q: 4. the lens has a switch for AF (auto focus) & MF (manual focus), if lens & camera are set to Auto focus, can the manual focus ring on the lens be turned to adjust focus without damaging the lens?

A: Like most AF lenses of today you can safely focus manually even if in AF mode.

Q: 5. Do I understand correctly that this package includes the $60 TAP-in console?

A: The Tamron TAP-in Console for Canon EF Lenses B&H # TATAP01C is a separate purchase option.

Q: 6. does the camera come out on the 17th of November or does it arrive then?

A: It comes out on the 17th.

Q: 7. What does this lens weigh?

A: The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens for Nikon F weighs 2.45 lb (1.11 kg)

Q: 8. Is this a push-pull zoom?

A: No. It is not a push pull...

Q: 9. Is this lens better than the Tamron 150-600mm (G1) for wildlife? Thanks!

A: In terms of image quality it is not better. It is just lighter and smaller, easier to travel with, easier to handle.

Q: 10. How will this lens compare to the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 lens for sharpness and image quality?

A: This lens is not designed to have similar image quality to the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens. It is a mid-grade telephoto zoom, and the 70-200mm G2 is a professional grade telephoto zoom. This will be smaller, lighter, and more versatile with its wider range of focal lengths. But the 70-200mm G2 will be superior in image quality and sharpness.

Wanted a lens for shooting Blue Angels air show with my Canon 80D. I first tried the Tamron 18-400 which was a big disappointment, could not get sharp pictures at all & chromatic aberration was terrible. Thank goodness for B&H return policy, it was returned & I replaced it with the 100-400. What a difference! Pictures for the most part are sharp with just a little vignetting. Keeper rate of air show photos was higher than I have had with any of my other lenses. The lens is also fairly light & easy to handle. Very pleased with this lens.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my Nikkor 70-300 after the focus motor started to become very slow. The focus on this lens, both AF and manual is fast and smooth. I have been getting some great images out of it.

Sharp, fast focusing, light weight, well built. Nothing to complain so far. Considering its price, I guess it is the best option in that price range.

I bought this lens for our first African Safari and wanted a lens that could have 600mm equivalent reach on my crop sensor D7500.  I read all of the reviews with quite a different view on image quality and AF performance.  My experience was great with this lens.  Image quality even at 400mm (600mm Equiv) was outstanding, AF was quick if not instantaneous and performance on moving subjects was very good.  The range of 100-400 is really good for any wildlife especially safari were the large animals can get pretty close.  At less than 2.5 pounds it felt great handheld on my D7500 and was perfect for traveling in my backback.  I took about 3000 shots with this lens on our east African Safari and was very pleased with the results.  Any large telephoto like this is very sensitive to your technique.  I think if you use high enough shutter speed and reasonably steady hands or bean bags you can get outstanding photos.  I would recommend this lens for anyone doing wildlife travel as your go to lens.

Sharp as a needle, relatively lightweight, beautifully constructed with good weather sealing. I find the AF fast and responsive in most situations other than real low light. The image stabilization works extremely well and I have been able to shoot 400mm at 1/30th of a second and get perfectly sharp pics.

I've owned the comparable Sigma, which I must say is also a very sharp lens—I have some great photos taken with it, but the Tamron has better weather sealing, something that is important to me. It also accommodates a tripod collar for those times when a tripod is necessary, whereas the Sigma has to rely on a kind of mickey-mouse collar to fit where it doesn't really go. I do not recommend the over-priced Tamron collar—it should come with it; a better and much cheaper choice is the HAOGE LMR-TL140 LENS COLLAR FOR TAMRON 100-400mm for about $50.

I highly recommend the Tamron 100-400mm.

Was concern about stop action at soccer games for my grandson but on a cloudy day at 400mm the pictures were clear and color wasn’t as good as it would have been on a sunny day. Bottom line pictures were in focus. Tap and UV filter were included which made it a great price. Also tried a Tamron 1.4x telecoverter and it worked great.
