Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I recently purchased a Hassy 503CW with two backs. Oneis clearly marked 6x6. The other is not marked but producesnegatives (images) that measure 5.6mmx5.6mm. Can I assumethis is the same as 6x6 or is it a film that cannot be scannedby this unit?

A: Yes. 120 medium format contains a range of frame sizes; the most common being the 6x6cm size. This actually has a frame size of 56mm x 56mm.

Q: 2. Can this scan formats 6x7, 6x9 and 6x12?

A: yes, it covers all medium format sizes. It actually covers a little larger than 6x12

Q: 3. How bad is this product? There are so many people complain about this scanner which is waste of money.

A: The software is its Achilles heel. Lack of lamp brightness and horrible frame selection hurts. Its sharper than Epson Flatbeds, but less colorful or dynamic as 120 size scans from Epson 4990 or V800. The holders are nice if film cut to 4 peices horz for plastic negative pages. Magnetic helps hold, but if film is short or too long the film can transport while being scanned. Software (possibly hardware) tends to crash a lot, too.

Q: 4. how many images will it scan at a time?

A: With a strip of film in the holder you have to do one at a time, although after you do the settings for one, you can move to the next scan pretty easily

Q: 5. What improvements changed between the original version and this new release?

A: According to the manufacturer, compared to the original version, the new Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner has an entirely new sensor and upgraded, higher-quality circuitry when compared to its predecessor. Plustek has a new manufacturing process with stricter quality control, and the scanner's calibration has been adjusted for better overall performance and image quality.

Q: 6. Is it possible to manual focus?

A: I'm sorry, But I really don't know. I've only used the scanner in auto focus.

Q: 7. Are you able to utilize a manual focus option incase the slide is bent or damaged and the autofocus isn't working?

A: There is no manual focusing option on this scanner. The lens is fixed.

Q: 8. All of my 120 negatives are cut to fit 9 1/2 clear vu sheets, i.e. 4 negatives in 6x6 format. Will the 120 holder allow scanning without cutting or damaging the 2 1/4 x9 1/2 negative strip?

A: Maybe. The scanner will only scan up to 3 frames at a time and the holder is about 3/4 shorter than what is needed to accommodate your strip. The last portion will be curled. The good news is that when you are done with the first three you can turn the film 180 degrees and scan the last frame. The holder will hold the film flat enough to scan. I have not had it damage my film yet, but if the film is older (20 years or more) or brittle I would not attempt it without cutting the strip.

Q: 9. Is it compatible with Apple's new OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 operating system?

A: Plustek has not released updated drivers for OS X Mavericks at this time.

Q: 10. Is this the only Plustek scanner that scans both 35mm and 120mm film ? Are 120mm film holders purchased separately ?

A: The 120mm film holders are included. The other model we have that scans both 35mm and 120mm is the Pacific Image PF120.
