This stops the camera or the lens from changing the focus distance, so the camera will stay focused at the point until you release the Focus Hold button.

I have found that the e-mount on the a7rii is strong enough to hold it but there is a fair amount of torque and anything in the wrong direction or too quick could put it past it's tolerance. That expensive of gear should be treated with respect I think. I'm just not one to risk it when the collar isn't unwieldy in the first place
