This Sony Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. It is made specifically to fit within the accessory filter slot of the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens, whose front diameter is too large to accommodate a screw-on filter. With that lens, the effect of this filter occurs behind the main glass elements instead of in front of them.

The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and includes an integrated locking mechanism to secure it within the compatible lens, as well as an external dial to allow rotation of the filter glass for control of the polarization effect.

I purchased this lens, hoping I would like it. I have arthritis in my hands & wrists and find it painful to handle many of the long lenses on the market. This one is sharp, well balanced and over all the perfect partner to my
Sony Ar iii.. the 2x converter makes this a perfect package. I can’t wait to take it on my next safari!

This is my first G Master lens. I really like how fast the auto focus is when using it with my a6300 camera body. The pictures I take with this lens are sharp and detailed. Plus this lens is much lighter than my SAL70400G (A-mount) lens.

I'm including a picture I recently took. It is straight out of the camera (SOOC).

Great lens still adjusting to the weight, it has a great range of focal length. Some might say a little overkill for a a6400 but a must have for wildlife.

The equipment loaded fine out of the box.  No problems with quick tests.  Pro raters havent given the 2x teleconverter great reviews, not bad, not great.  Hope to give the teleconverter a workout in the next 2 months.

Although I just received the lens and have used it on several occasions, I will say that I have validated the purchase and some-what justified the price.  I was torn between the Sigma 150-600 and this lens.  The Sigma lens (for Canon EF mount) needs a Sony E-mount adaptor and is one pound heavier.  The Sigma costs $1,200 compared to the Sony $2,500 price unless you add the 1.4 (or 2.0) extender bringing the Sony to $3,100 and nearly the same focal range as the Sigma.  All totaled, having all Sony kit was as important as the lens quality to me personally.  My only consideration at this point is whether I sell my Sony F/4 70-200 which I am presently considering.  My thinking is my Sony F/4 24-70 with 1.4 Extender may do nicely.  The jury is still out.

have been taking pictures for 60 years, from a Kodak Brownie, to SLR, to SLT to mirrorless. This lens paired with the Sony A7Riii takes my photography to a new level. The lens is as sharp as any I have used. The optical Stabilization is unbelievable. Co-ordinated with the stabilization in the camera I can hand hold at 400mm for less than 1/100 of a second with out visible shake. It is clear that my 70 year old hands can't hold a 3 lb lens that steady but the stabilization of lets me do the impossible. If I had any negatives it would be the weight of the lens. But it is expected in a long lens of that quality. Also the fall off of the lens is less than I hoped for meaning I need to blur many shots in processing. (I never thought of complaining that a lens is too sharp). Sony has outdone itself with this lens.

Finally a lens with effect stabilization and excellent optics. Years of using a variety of Canon super telephotos resigned me to thinking I could only get sharp images if I spent 10k dollars or more. This lens is perfect.

I have only had this lens for a short while but I am already thoroughly impressed. This is a hefty piece of glass but not overly so...the build quality is top notch. The images I capture are razor sharp that just ooze quality. This lens makes me excited to find new and creative ways to use it. It's expensive no doubt but I have absolutely no regrets about my purchase.

I've always dreamed of having a quality telephoto zoom lens, and at age 52, I decided to pull the trigger. I love everything about the image that this lens produces. The fact that it can focus at close distances was very important to me as a wildlife photographer. I can see why it's a G master lens.

The 100-400 GM deserves the 'GM' rating, as it provides excellent IQ in a compact and easy to transport package. Paired with the 1.4x in good lighting conditions it was the best option for wildlife field photography for the traveler before the release of the 200-600. The advantage of this setup is to have a faster lens without the 1.4X, with less reach, when the lighting is not ideal. The image stabilization is excellent, and it focuses very quickly with the new a9 and a6400. The downside is the lens almost doubles when at full zoom, and I would not recommend this in a dusty environment. Image I is fantastic, bokeh is very smooth as well.
