A long-reaching telephoto zoom characterized by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is part of the esteemed L-series developed for full-frame EOS DSLRs. One fluorite element and one Super UD element have been incorporated into the lens' construction, and both help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to deliver notable clarity, image sharpness, and faithful color reproduction. An Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to lens elements in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich imagery. Benefitting the optical components of the lens, a four-stop effective Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake and can be dedicated to different styles of shooting. Furthermore, a redeveloped rotation-type zoom ring pairs with an internal focusing mechanism, and an Ultrasonic Motor, to deliver quick and intuitive handling to benefit handheld shooting. Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' list of attributes make it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications.

Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality. Zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design elements include a tripod collar that can be attached or detached with the lens mounted to the camera and an included lens hood that permits easy control over specialty filters with the hood in place.

Telephoto zoom is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-format models where it provides a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.

One fluorite element and one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.

An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.

A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

A redeveloped tripod collar can be attached or detached from the lens without having to remove the lens from the camera.

The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window for easier adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM work with my vintage 40D camera?

A: Yes. Current EF Canon lens mounts will fit 40D, 30D, 20D, 10D and the original digital rebel.... all newer digital rebels, and....50D, 60D, 70D, 80D, 5D thru 5DmkIV, 6D, 6DmkII, 7D and 7DmarkII manufactured since. However, EFs lenses will not work on full frame camera bodies such as the 5D and 6D bodies. EFs lens will work on 40D. (10D through 80D) and all digital rebel bodies.

Q: 2. Is this lens fully compatible with Canon 70D ? And with the 1.4 TC ?

A: Can't speak to the 70D question, but it is fully compatible with the 1.4. NOT the 2.0 though. I get quite good results with the 1.4 TC and this lens.

Q: 3. I'm in the early stages of researching 100-400mm lenses before buying one for my Canon EOS 80D. I've noticed that the 2 leading 3rd party lenses, the Sigma and Tamron, have accessory devices for "fine-tuning" the lenses, but Canon doesn't. Are Canon lenses perfectly set up in the factory so that they don't need any "fine-tuning"? Thanks.

A: It is less likely that you will need to fine tune the front and back focus adjustment if you buy a Canon lens but it may also happen that you need to. The Canon 80d allows you to do that fine tuning in camera. Please take a look here at the 80D manual page 427 as it shows you how to do it in camera. https://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300022720/01/EOS_80D_Instruction_Manual_EN.pdf

Q: 4. How effective is this lens under low light situations like baseball games played under floodlights?

A: I have had good experience on both a 7DII frame as well as the 6D. I am a big fan of the lens. I have the previous version and the performance and design of this one are much improved.I use a 1.4x extender frequently as well. The ISO capability on the camera seems a bigger factor to me than the lens.

Q: 5. What is the aperture range?

A: Looks like most of your answers have been answered below. But the range is 4.5-32 at 100mm and 5.6-40 at 400mm. The lens is great...sharp images at all focal lengths. From my research and help of another professional colleague...this lens is better than the previous 100-400...and I can see why. Think what you shoot...if it meets your needs...then go for it, I am not disappointed I did.

Q: 6. What is a Canon Pro Camera ?

A: Canon 1 Series (e.g. Canon 1D X)

Q: 7. Is the socket for the foot of the collar (the removable part) a standard thread size? Is it possible to mount a QR plate on it, instead of the foot?

A: I have the same lens and therefore the same problem. What I intend to do is take the lens to a hardware store and try different screws until I get the correct fit. I'm wanting to mount a QR plate as well.

Q: 8. With the collar attached to the tripod, are there issues zooming or focusing from the bottom of this lens?

A: Nope- I've had no problems. I don't use a tripod very much - but what I do is rotate the tripod mount ring around so the foot is on top. Makes for a handy way to carry the camera/lens.

Q: 9. What's the size of the opening on the canon 100-400 mm lens for screwing to a monopod?

A: The lens shoe takes an industry-standard 1/4 inch diameter, 20 threads/inch bolt. Same as the bottom of the camera.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Canon eos 60D?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the 60D.

I was very happy with my 70-300 mm L lens and did not want the 100-400 because of its weight. When my husband got the new 100-400 lens, I was blown away by its sharpness and fast focusing. A couple months later I got the same lens for our trip to Alaska. I used the lens on a tripod and hand-held. The quality of the images is superb. Only downside is the new lens cap which comes off too easily.

This is a great lens and it even produces hig quality photos when coupled with the Canon 1.4 extender. Glad I bought it and I highly recommend it.

Not much to say. Does everything it is advertised as doing and why I purchased it. Mostly used for wildlife/bird photography. Image quality equivalent to my 400MM prime but with added versatility and IS.

This lens is an upgrade for me from a 70-300mm IS USM f4-5.6. The 70-300mm is a good entry level zoom that performed very well for the cost but performance wide open at 250-300mm was not sufficiently sharp for my nature and wildlife work. Images at 300mm f5.6 were soft. I have not yet used the 100-400 extensively yet but I have checked performance wide open at 400mm and I am pleased with the results so far - very sharp images. The max aperture could limit how you use the lens. Unless you only shoot in bright sun, you will get the best results with a camera that allows shooting at higher ISO. The lens is a bit heavy but can be hand held - although maybe not for long periods. I plan to do some hiking with the lens and I think carrying the lens will not be a problem with the right strap configuration to help with the weight - the Peak Design Leash seems to work well for this use. Based on other reviews, I replaced the Canon tripod foot with one from RRS and I am glad I did.

I just recently bought my own copy of this lens and have taken some limited images with it and it is just as sharp as other reviews have said it is. I rented one in the summer of '15 for a trip to the Grand Canyon and it amazing how it brought the far side of the canyon so much closer and clearer so that you could make out details that you couldn't see with the naked eye. Highly recommended.

This lens really can change your life. I already have a macro, a wide angle, and a standard-range lens, but this 100-400 lens is a window to a whole new world. Yes, it is somewhat heavy, but it is so worth the weight. I'm not going to talk about technical specifics, here, but instead tell you how you will be able to capture images you never dreamed were possible. Far away cloud formations, mountains, even close objects, almost like a macro are possible to now get. This truly is a miracle lens. I tried a 70-200mm before, and it didn't do much for me. This 100-400, however, delivers. It's now my main go-to lens.
