Characterized by its close-focusing and perspective control capabilities, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro from Canon is a normal-length tilt-shift lens well-suited for product, tabletop, architectural, and interior photography. Up to +/- 8.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for more stability. A minimum focus distance of 10.6" and a maximum magnification of 0.5x are also benefitted by the range of movements for more control over depth of field when photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features a pair of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 8.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° in any direction for applying the movements in distinct directions.

Tilt-locking mechanism and a large tilt knob benefit operation and ensure the lens stays in place while shooting.

Two ultra-low dispersion elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.

One aspherical element minimizes spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.

Both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

A minimum focusing distance of 10.6" along with a maximum magnification of 0.5x benefits working with close-up subjects.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I'm assuming that with the EF 25 extension, this lens will produce 1:1?

A: Yes, if you use the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens would become a 1x macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ration and a minimum focus distance of approximately 7.9 inches. However, do note that you will lose infinity focus when using the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube on the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens.

Q: 2. Anyone have experience using this lens on an APS-C camera? Specifically, I have a 7Dmk2 that I would be using it on.

A: Yes, on a Canon Rebel. It's a longer lens than 24 mm (for a full frame sensor) but works fine.

Q: 3. i really want to get TS lens , which one should i get - 50 , 90 or 135 ? i want to do portraits , some small things , like watches, snowballs.i just want to get the one that covers the most , because i can not afford two , or all of them

A: If your camera has the full frame sensor, given the description of the photographs you intend to take, I would recommend the 90mm. For crop sensor, the 50mm.

Q: 4. Any chance this can be used on a Nikon full frame body with converter?

A: Short answer, no. Nikon DSLR body has a longer flange focal distance, aperture would remain fully open on lens (no aperture rings at lens) and metering would be compromised, not worth spending $2K on an excellent lens that you will not be able to utilize at 100% of its capabilities

Q: 5. Are there any books on how to get the most use out of these tilt lenses?

A: There are no books on using the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, but there are online videos on YouTube.

Q: 6. Hi. Can you use this lens with a canon EOS R5 along with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R?

A: Yes indeed! The EF to RF adapter will let you make use of almost any EF lens on the RF body.

Q: 7. Is it necessary to always use a tripod with this lens, even when not using using the T/S?

A: Its a heavy lens but no worse than a telephoto. You should be fine if you follow the rule of keeping your shutter speed equal to or higher than the focal length of the lensWhen handholding.

Q: 8. Is this lens sharper than the older Canon TS-E 90mm Tilt Shift Lens?

A: Yes, I've used both and the new version is much sharper.

Q: 9. When using an adapter for R mirrorless cameras do the lenses work the same as with a DSLR camera in terms of sharpness, lens movements and metering?

A: If you purchase the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R for use with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens will have the same performance as when used on a DSLR camera, including sharpness, lens movements, and exposure metering.

Q: 10. Actually, please, what is the image circle of this lens? Thanks

A: The image circle of the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens is 67.2.
