The black P170 from AKG is a small-diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern designed to capture the sound of various acoustic and amplified instruments in project studios, home recordings and live situations. Offered as a cost-effective alternative to the classic AKG C451 B, this microphone is well suited for capturing guitars & strings, drums, hi-hats and percussion among others.

The lightweight 0.5" gold-sputtered diaphragm delivers a clear sound with fast transients, and is capable of handling sound-pressure levels up to 155 dB without introducing perceptible distortion. A switchable 20 dB pad enables distortion-free recording of very loud sound sources often associated with proximity miking.

The all-metal body improves rejection of RF interference so you can use the microphone near transmitter stations and along with wireless microphones.

The P170 is built to resist high temperatures and humidity. The rugged body and sturdy front grille protect it from the rigors of day-to-day use.

I make band practice recordings in our rehearsal space. I got one of these to try out as a hi hat mic and it sounds great. It seems durable, too. The mount we tried out failed and dropped the mic on the floor, but it was fine afterwards. Definitely use the built in pad if you're close miking.

I upgraded from a Shure SM57 as an overhead; And also a vocal microphone. Much better sounding and clear than the 57.

AKG never disappoints. I never had any doubts when I bought it. I've been familiar with the C451 for years in studio and performance use, and frankly, this mic is just perfect for a home studio and up. I've been using mine mostly for guitar and instrument micing. Here's a sample of it in use on the guitars: https://youtu.be/nH6eD-FrKL0?si=YRHnFHaNs0sdHdOV

I read a great review of these AKG Perception series mics, so with a bit of skepticism I ordered a pair for our college's media production program. We had few small capsule condensors for our students to try - and these are priced just right for experimantation. But since I've run comparisons with other mics in our fleet (Sennheisers, A-T, Sonys) I am bowled over by the low self-noise and great siound. They are a bit sensative to wind noise, so a wind screen is essential - but the P-170 is a very sweet sounding mic for vocals, piano or guitar.
