Both work great, although resin will scratch easier, I believe they are also cheaper, but good brands like Lee Filters are excellent. Both types of filters can come either with a hard edge or a graduated edge. This refers to how quickly the shading in the filter changes from dark to clear. Hard edges work best for something like a sunset where you can but the edge exactly on the horizon, if not careful there will be a prominent line thru the shot. Graduated filters have very gradual change from shaded to clear, and will leave not noticeable line, their effect is more gradual . I hope this helps.
