After that it becomes continually easier as the cam rotates increasing the lever arm length and the mechanical advantage. This feedback works in reverse when you close the head with the last few degrees of rotation being very hard. You know that the camera is locked without looking.

A: While I have only examined and not used these outstandingly designed and manufactured ball heads, the fact is I was a motion picture camera assistant who mounted $500,000 movie cameras in precarious positions, and therefore I do have an opinion. The knob/lever decision comes down to exactly the point you elucidate, to wit: security vs. convenience. If you require 100% security assurance, get the knob. If you can live with 99% assurance, get the lever.
