A: Personally I would go with the Swarovski EL 10x42 SwaroVision Binoculars. I have compared both models side by side in a low light setting, and the Swaro's are superior. There is a slight brightness difference. Also there is more glass in both barrels of the Swarovski's. Build quality wise it's a better binocular too.

A: Obviously the ability to hand hold binoculars without too much shake depends on a number of factors, including the magnification, the environmental conditions (wind), and the hand of the user. Generally, most people are pretty comfortable with 8 power binoculars, and much less so with 12 power binoculars. These fall between However, I have a steady hand and don't have any difficulty using them without a tripod under most conditions. Seems the that use to which you plan to put them may drive the answer for you. A tripod may work well for stationary use or where subjects are not moving rapidly, but would be difficult to use for birding or sports applications where operating a tripod would be a challenge.
