TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamp design is based on discrete components, just like classic professional gear. They achieve an EIN rating of -125 dBu, meaning their noise level is practically below the range of hearing. But instead of judging the design merely by test measurements, key components were selected following extensive listening tests

TASCAM uses proven components throughout the US-16x08. One example is the NE5532 op-amp, used throughout classic recording consoles and signal processors due to their musical sound

The first two channels can be switched to direct guitar inputs for direct recording of electric and acoustic guitar and bass without the need for an external preamp

The Ultra HDDA mic preamps and line inputs offer 20 dB of headroom for distortion-free recordings of percussive, high SPL instruments like drum tracks and guitar solos

The eight XLR mic inputs have switchable +48V phantom power to use up to 8 condenser mics at the same time. The two front panel TRS line inputs are switchable between instrument level and line level input with adjustable gain. An additional six TRS line ins on the rear of the unit are switchable between -10dB and +4dB. All of the jacks support balanced or unbalanced 1/4" signals

When powered on without a USB connection, the US-16x08 functions as an 8-channel microphone preamp. Mics pass through the Ultra-HDDA preamps to the eight balanced line outputs on the rear panel. Use the interface to add additional high-quality mic inputs to a mixer or audio interface

Digital processing features like the DSP Monitor Mixer and USB drivers make sessions with the US-16x08 comfortable for the musicians and engineer. The DSP Mixer includes processing for a polished-sounding headphone mix without latency delay from your DAW software, fueled by a Blackfin DSP processor. And drivers, re-written from the ground up, provide improved compatibility and performance on Mac, Windows and iPad recording systems

The converters and electronics on the US-16x08 allow you to record at audio resolutions up to 96 kHz/24-bit for detailed acoustic productions

The US-16x08 uses USB 2.0 to connect to your computer. Connect the interface to any available USB port. USB 2.0 provides plenty of data bandwidth, even when recording 16 channels at 96 kHz/24-bit. The US-16x08 will also work with USB 3.0 jacks on your computer

Powered by an Analog Devices BlackFin DSP processor, the US-16x08 includes an advanced digital mixer for monitor mixing. Each input includes 4-band EQ, a low-cut filer, and compressor. The DSP mixer can store up to 10 snapshots as scenes - making it easy to recall mixer settings. The DSP mixer feature can even be used as a live mixer, controlled by your PC. An additional tab opens a digital patchbay to route signals to any output

The US-16x08 includes a driver architecture that was written in-house by TASCAM engineers. The Windows driver software can be installed without connecting the interface, with simple on-screen instructions. Mac users can use the interface without installing a driver at all. Simply install the control panel software in order to change device settings. Finally, the class-compliant driver allows it to be used with tablets like Apple's iPad. (Requires Apple's Camera Connection Kit for USB connection, not included)

The angled design makes desktop viewing and operation much more comfortable for tabletop use. All other interfaces have their controls on the front or the top of the device, causing you to crane your neck to read the knobs and switches. A pair of rack ears are also included for use in a standard 19" equipment rack

The US-16x08 includes both headphone and line output volume controls. Even when both powered monitors and headphones are connected, the user can set an optimum level for each during operation. And when you want to work on headphones, you don't need to reach around to switch off your monitors

The 70 mW+70 mW (into 32 ohms) headphone amp makes headphone monitoring easy even in loud situations. This assures you enough monitoring volume when recording drums, guitars, or rehearsals, live or in the studio

Standard MIDI input and output connectors allow connection with the thousands of keyboards, drum machines, controllers, and other sources that employ 5-pin DIN MIDI connectors. The interfaces can also be used for synchronized operation of multitrack recorders and other external recording equipment

The durable metal jacket is employed for heavy duty use

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come with Mac OS X recording software? If so, will the included software allow simultaneous 16 channel recording? If not, what Mac OS X software can I use for simultaneous 16 track recording?

A: No the Tascam US-16x08 does not come with any software. If you want to be able to record 16 tracks or more at once I would suggest you get Pro Tools 11. Here is the B&H part number for Pro Tools 11, B&H # AVPT11DVDS. You can record 32 tracks at once and have 256 busses at your disposal. I would suggest you go to the Avid website and make sure your computer is an Avid-qualified Mac before you make the purchase. Then you should be good to go.

Q: 2. Does the built in software EQ and compression affect the recorded signal, or is this purely for monitoring?

A: Based on the information provided by Tascam, the dsp mixer of this unit is for monitoring only.

Q: 3. The specs don't mention drivers for using the 16x08 interface with Android tablets. Are there drivers for Android?

A: There are no Android drivers or apps available.

Q: 4. Does nyone know if this is compatable with Reaper ?

A: Reaper has not been officially tested by Tascam, however with the proper drivers installed from Tascam, Reaper should recognize the US-16x08 as an I/O device.Unfortunately we are unable to confirm, but are aware of many users that use Reaper with Tascam interfaces.

Q: 5. How much is the transformer for 5V input ?

A: We do not have the Tascam branded power supply for this unit, You may wnat to contact them directly. If you would like a universal power supply this one would work for you: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/574791-REG/Hosa_Technology_ACD_477_ACD_477_Universal_Power_Adapter.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 6. Is it possible to bypass mic preamps on m2 or m4 models? I want to use external preamp

A: You can come from your mic pre amp into the MOTU M2 or M4 at line level via the 1/4-inch TRS input in the center of the combo input connection. This would bypass the mic pre amp on the audio interface.

Q: 7. can this be used with a usb hub, a powered hub? i only have one usb-c port om my computer.

A: It is recommended that you use a powered USB hub.

Q: 8. Can I power this with a USB-C powering jack (wall wart) and use it without a computer?

A: Yes, it can be powered via a USB-C wall adapter and used as a standalone pre-amp.

Q: 9. Is it possible to simultaneously record multi-track to a DAW and have a 1-to-1 pass thru for the first 8 XLR inputs to the first 8 TRS outputs? I'd like to basically put this in front of my 10ch mixer as a "pass thru multi-channel audio interface"

A: The included DSP mixer allows the user to route any input to any output, so this type of "pass-through" recording should be possible with the Tascam US-16x08.

Q: 10. Does it's class compliantness allow me to use it with Linux? How am i "punished" for this? Do i still get the 16 in/8 out?

A: The TASCAM US-16x08 USB Audio/MIDI Interface (BH # TAUS16X08) includes drivers that have been re-written from the ground up, providing improved compatibility and performance on Mac, Windows and iPad recording systems. LINUX drivers are not available. Note: Driver Software The US-16x08 includes a driver architecture that was written in-house by TASCAM engineers.

This interface does everything I need it to do and more. I am finally able to record my drum kit in to Garage Band using multiple microphones with a separate track for each. Works awesome. there are more features that will come in handy like the pre amps for when I record to tape. I highly recommend this unit.

We are using our Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio/MIDI Interface to connect several XLR mics and bring them into a laptop that we use for Zoom. After setting up the Tascam in t Upload he Settings Panel, the mics now get mixed and flow through the USB cable into the laptop. Zoom picks up the combined mics as if they are one device. This combined mic output can also be sent via the line out to be used by a wireless hearing system for hearing-challenged people. The Tascam is easy to set up, connects to multiple devices, and simple to operate via its software.
