Q: 3. Hi.I own an old Davis & Sanford Carbonlite Transporter with a Z10 head.I am wondering if the Z1 would fit on my tripod (instead of my current Z10) and if so which screw I should choose (1/4 -20 or 3/8 )?Actually, I wish I could get the Z1 head with the Wimberley C-12 Quick Release Clamp in order to add a P-30 QR Plate, but all of that without having to buy a new tripod. Thanks a lot for your forthcoming answer.

A: Your helpful answers were exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot to you all.

Q: 7. Hi! I just bought this AS Monoball Z1 sp w flat disc, assuming I could remove the disc and install an RRS QR system, however read conflicting article that it will not be user replaceable. I will send it back if thats the case. Can I remove the flat disc or not? I don't want to screw the RRS QR plate on top of the disc. Thanks

A: I bought the Arca Monoball Z1 sp with the flat disc in 2014, and proceeded to do exactly as you intendremove the flat disk and install the RRS QR clamp. My procedure was to firmly clamp a 3/8 bolt into my vise and then mount the Z1 to that bolt. Then I positioned the flat plate into the Z1 vertical slot (the 90 degrees slot) and firmly tightened all the Z1 controls. Then fit an appropriate socket to the hex-head attaching screw and apply CCW force (the screw is a common right-hand-thread). The relief around the hex-head attaching screw is tight, so it may be necessary to fit a thin-wall socket. In any case, be certain the socket gets fully inserted on the hex to avoid rounding off the hex. I used a long handled ratchet on my 3/8-drive socket to allow me to apply the necessary torque (around 20 to 30 foot-pounds).In late 2013 the photo press mentioned that Arca had replaced their thread sealant with a more permanent epoxy type, which was impossible to remove. I purchased my Z1 in mid 2014, and the flat plate was easily removed with moderate torque. However, if your later-issue Z1 proves recalcitrant, try applying pinpoint heat to the hex-head attaching screw immediately prior to applying removal torque a few seconds with a propane torch should add the necessary heat. Or simply send the Z1 to their US repair facility (Precision Camera) and let them do it for a few dollars. Turn-around time is usually very fast, and it will be money well spent.Ive used a selection of ball heads, and I feel the Z1 to be one of the best. Coupled with an RRS clamp, this is an excellent platform.

Q: 8. Can this be mounted on the head - Really Right Stuff Lever-Release Style Quick-Release Clamp, 60mm B&H # REB2LRII MFR # B2-LR II ?

A: Yes, you can absolutely do that.

Q: 9. Does the knob have friction control?

A: Yes, the following unit offers PMF tension control.

Q: 10. Could anyone kindly let me know if the 1/4" 20-thread stud could be replaced by a 3/8" 16-thread stud? I know I can use an adapter sleeve, but my question is whether the stud itself could be replaced. TIA, Roy

A: No, when using the "Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 sp (Single Pan) Ballhead with 1/4"-20 Screw", the 1/4" 20 thread stud cannot be replaced by a 3/8" 16 thread. But, the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 sp (Single Pan) Ballhead is available with a 3/8" 16 thread: https://bhpho.to/2ncKVhr

So light and so stable!! It is lighter than my Manfrotto 405 Pro Digital Geared Head but with pretty much the same resulted sharpness. I started on small tripod heads of the Bogen and Manfrotto brand. They are less expensive but if you can swing it, buy this one and you will never regret about it. This ball head sits on my Gitzo and Benro tripods nicely. The pano handle is very small but seems pretty well made. The tightening big knob works beautifully. Just line your lens up where you want it, tighten the knob to position the camera and lens. Then give it just a little more twist, you are set. My 50mm-500mm and Oly E330 combination wouldn't move a bit once I tighten them there. What a different from the Manfrotto 468MGRC0 Hydrostatic Ballhead with RC0 Quick Release I have. I might had worked the Manfrotto 468MGRC0 hard for the few years I have it and it is now broken by the neck. When it was in working order, the Big Ma lens shifted on it. I hope this Acra ball head will last lot longer than the Manfrotto 468MGRC0. I bought it with the 3/8 screw so I can use my Manfrotto quick releases on it. I am using it with the Manfrotto 577 Rapid Connect Adapter. The 501 plates of this unit fits my cameras and lenses. If you have smaller lenses, other Manfrotto quick releases might fit you better. The 501 plate is little bit too big for the cameras. Yes, I bought all these from BHphoto@. ...

I bought this head and the RRS lever quick release. Worked great until I added the Novoflex Castel-Q macro focusing rail. Slipped right through the RRS clamp. Replaced the RRS with a Kirk knob quick release and now it's almost perfect. I have this head mounted on a GT2541ex and it's great for macro work. The elliptical ball keeps things from flopping and it sets very tightly, even with using a 200/4 on a focusing rail at 1:1. Fit, finish and design, plus the best ratio of weight to holding weight. Until the Arca Swiss D4 becomes available, this is my favorite head for macro work (the Cube is too heavy). The only downside it the tiny knob for rotation.

That is a really best qualy product. Heavy duty monoball, solid, easy to use. I use it with my Hasselblad H4D-40 with 120mm lens - really heavy combination.

I have used a Markins head and the very interesting Novoflex Magic Ball made for the Berlebach tripod but nothing compares with the Z1 for large format use. I wish I'd gotten this about six years earlier. It is smoooth and precise. The asymmetrical ball is hard to believe until you try it. I can only sing praise of this ball head ...What a combination - Arca Swiss and B&H.

I've got the Z1 with a QR clamp (for an L-Plate) from RRS mounted on some Gitzo GT3541 legs and could not be happier. It's a pricey setup, but I'm more than confident that this will last for a very, very long time. I shoot my stills with a Nikon D600 (with grip) with either a 14-24mm, 24-70mm or 70-200mm and, for once, not at all worried about my camera dropping or creeping as I was with my previous tripod setups. This thing locks tight and pans smoothly. I bought it for an upcoming trip to Europe and cannot wait to see what I can get. If you're thinking about purchasing this ballhead, I'd highly recommend picking up a separate QR clamp to receive the full benefit of shooting on a tripod.

I was also considering the Markins Q10, the RRS BH-40 and BH-55 with this ballhead. All are highly regarded and reviewed but, I selected this one for its asymmetrical ball and couldn't be happier. I replaced the disk with a RRS Quick Release. The disk can easily be removed with an 11mm 1/4 socket - the walls are too thick on the 11mm 3/8 socket to fit.Note that there is right-hand and left-hand models relative to the slot and tension knob. I bought this one, keeping the notch forward, so that I could hold the camera with my right hand and work the tension knob with my left.

When I was first looking for a ballhead a few years ago, Arca-Swiss B1 looked tempting, but did not make a cut: it was too heavy and of the old obsolete right-handed type. All these drawbacks have been corrected in the new left-handed Arca-Swiss Z1. In a left-handed head, the tension knob is on the right when the drop slot faces you. Arca-Swiss makes both orientations and they are not in the specs, so pay attention to pictures while ordering. Kirk makes a screw knob clamp for this head. RRS does too, but it is not as fast. Be careful unscrewing the bolt to install the clamp, it is easy to damage the corners. You will need a 1/4 socket. With the elyptical ball, hydraulic force, and smooth operation, this is the best full size ballhead on the market, well above the overrated RRS. Only Markins comes close, but does not have the elyptical ball. However, in a smaller size and lower capacity category, Markins takes the lead. B&H is indeed the best place to get the Z1 and was recommended to me be the Arca-Swiss representative in the USA.
